Apple Files Patent For A Blood Pressure Monitoring System For Apple Watch That Includes A Liquid Filled Sensor

Apple Announces Apple Watch Series 6 That Can Measure Blood Oxygen Levels

The focus of Apple Watch over the years has been ever increasingly towards a health device. For Apple Watch 7, Apples webpage markets points to Apple Watch being The Future of Health with sensors for measuring blood oxygen and the ability to take an ECG at any time. One of the possible next health related features that Apple is working on is measuring blood pressure, with or without a blood pressure cuff. Patently Apple has covered a number of Apples patent on this starting in 2018: 01, 02, 03, 04, 05, 06, 07 and more.

Today the US Patent & Trademark Office published a patent application from Apple that relates to blood pressure measurement devices, and more particularly, the present embodiments relate to blood pressure measurement devices including a liquid filled sensor.

The blood pressure measurement device can also include a fluid chamber coupled to the support plate, positioned between the user and the support plate when the blood pressure measurement device is worn by the user, and comprising a pressure sensor configured to measure pressures of liquid within the fluid chamber.

Apples patent FIG. 1A illustrates an example blood pressure measurement device being worn by a user.

Apples patent FIG. 6 below illustrates an example process for operating a blood pressure measurement device and FIG. 7 shows an example system diagram for a blood pressure measurement device.

Apple Watch May Get Thermometer Blood

These health features reportedly won’t show up until 2022 at the earliest.

Apple reportedly has some ambitious health features in store for future versions of its Apple Watch. The tech giant is working on giving the Apple Watch a “tool to tell users when their blood pressure is increasing and a thermometer to help with fertility planning,” according to a report Wednesday from The Wall Street Journal.

The fertility feature could be available as soon as next year, said the Journal, citing unnamed sources and internal Apple documents. The company is also reportedly working on improvements to the Apple Watch’s irregular-heartbeat monitoring and sleep tracking, which could be available next year.

Apple has made health and fitness one of the key elements of the Apple Watch. With the Apple Watch Series 6 last year, Apple introduced a sensor that can measure blood oxygen level and unveiled Fitness Plus, a subscription service offering workout routines and more. The continued push to add more sensors and health tools could help keep the Apple Watch ahead of competitors also looking to secure a place on people’s wrists by offering improved health tech.

Can Apple Watch 8 Measure Blood Pressure

ByNick Tan

Unfortunately, Apple Watch 8 blood pressure monitoring is not available, but Apple does have plans to roll out a blood pressure feature within the next few years. That the Apple Watch 8 lacks this capability may be a surprise given that it has many other health features, like being able to detect blood oxygen levels and having an app that can generate a ECG similar to a single-lead electrocardiogram. But getting an accurate reading for blood pressure is much more complicated, and Apple is still researching how to do this in a way that suits the sleek design of its products.

Can I Measure My Blood Pressure With Apple Watch

This is probably the most asked question by anybody who finds traditional blood pressure cuffs bothersome and inconvenient. Apple Watch alone cannot take a blood pressure reading. The only medically accurate and validated way to do so today is by stopping the blood flow by inflating a blood pressure cuff around your upper arm and then deflating it while listening for changes in your arteries. To use your Apple Watch to measure blood pressure, you will need a connected blood pressure monitor that has been medically validated for accuracy such as QardioArm, which has been clinically tested, FDA approved and has a CE Mark.

In addition, the Watch can be used to monitor your blood pressure. There are a few different ways to measure your blood pressure with the Apple Watch. One is to use the built-in heart rate sensor. The watch will take your blood pressure readings automatically as you go about your day. Complicated Redesign And New Sensor Are Delaying Mass Manufacturing

    By Adrian PotoroacaSeptember 1, 2021, 7:37

Why it matters: Apple is expected to announce the Apple Watch Series 7 this month, marking the first redesign since the Series 4 and bringing an important health monitoring upgrade in the form of a blood pressure sensor. However, fans looking forward to buying one will probably have to wait several weeks before theyll be able to get it, as manufacturing issues have delayed mass production until later this month.

The upcoming Apple Watch seems to have hit some production issues due to the device sporting a complicated design. According to separate reports from Nikkei Asia and Bloomberg, the new device will enter mass production at a later date than initially planned and is expected to be available in limited quantities at launch.

Apple suppliers began trial production runs for the Apple Watch Series 7 last week, but the new chassis has proven difficult to make within the tight tolerances required by the Cupertino tech giant. Assembling the components of the new wearable is also taking longer than with previous generations, as it requires more steps to complete, and the final product needs to meet requirements for water-resistance performance.

Production has been temporarily halted while Apple and its suppliers iron out the kinks in the manufacturing process and to further certify designs before going into mass production.

When Is This Coming To Apple Watch

These patents were filed in 2017, so Apple has now been sitting on this technology for a few years now. Could we see Apple Watch measuring blood pressure inside the next year or two? Its possible. But Apple will want to make sure the apparatus that makes this possible works 100% correctly and that could prove tricky. Itll also need to do thousands of hours of real-world tests to make sure the data it records is accurate.

On top of this, Apple will have to find a way to convince people to ditch their traditional, medically backed blood pressure measurement units in favor of a new strap for their Apple Watch. Finally, Apple will need to assess whether there is even demand for such a thing. I mean, most people might be fine with their current blood pressure measurement setup and not want to pay $100-$200 for an Apple Watch accessory that might not be as accurate.

Either way, the patents show Apples long-standing commitment to making Apple Watch the #1 wearable for tracking health metrics. Just recently, Apple added the ability to more accurately track heart rate fluctuations by improving Apple Watchs EEG technology. Adding in the ability to monitor blood pressure seems like the next obvious step for Apple Watchs health capabilities
