How to Use Wrist Blood Pressure Monitor

Nearly half of Americans have high blood pressure , according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. High blood pressure forces your heart to work harder, putting a burden on the rest of your body. A home blood pressure monitor is not a diagnostic device, but a tool to help you keep track of your blood pressure between checkups.

The American Heart Association defines hypertension as having either a systolic reading over 130, or a diastolic reading over 80 mm Hg for adults over the age of 20, and prehypertension as 120/80 mm Hg or above. These numbers refer to the pressure of blood against your blood-vessel walls. The first number is the systolic pressure, measured when the heart beats the second number is the diastolic pressure, measured when the heart rests between beats.

The American Heart Association and many doctors recommend a blood pressure monitor for home use to help people with high blood pressure manage the condition. The daily use of a monitor can help a person track their blood pressure and prompt them to seek emergency care. At-home monitoring is also useful for patients who experience white coat syndrome, where the stress of visiting the doctors office causes blood pressure to spike. Still, keep in mind that home monitoring is meant to accompanynot replaceregular monitoring by a physician.

Arm And Cuff Position

Now that you have your body in the proper position and the cuff on your wrist, start your 5 minutes of quiet time. Once youre relaxed, the wrist and arm position are the next step. Just like with an upper arm cuff, its extremely important to have the wrist cuff at the height of your heart 5.

There are two ways to accomplish this. The first is to rest your elbow on the table surface in front of you. Then bend your elbow raising the cuff up to the same height as your heart. Most decent monitors have a heart height sensor which will let you know when the cuff is at the correct height.

Please read your monitor manual for the specific instructions on this for your particular monitor.

The Omron wrist monitor I recommend, requires the distance from the top of your seat to the top of the table to be between 10 to 14 apart. If the distance doesnt fall into the range, they say to turn off the sensor and determine the height yourself.

In addition, the size of persons torso may make the sensor inaccurate. If either one of these are the situation for you, follow the second technique.

The second technique involves stopping the cuff at the height you determine where your heart is. You can keep your elbow in the same position as the first technique above.

Or you can slide it out to the side and position the cuff close to your chest to help determine the correct height. Once the cuff is at the correct height, keep it there for the measurement.

My Doctor Wants To Compare The Reading From My Home Bp Monitor With The Reading Taken In The Office What Are The Instructions On How To Do This

When doing this type of a comparison, it is very important that the measurements are taken in a certain manner in order for the reading on the Omron monitor to be accurate. The Omron monitor uses oscillometric technology that measures the vibration of the blood as it moves through the arteries. The doctor is using a different method of measurement and listens to the sound of your heart. It is necessary for the doctor to take the first measurement using the Omron monitor. The brachial artery is fully open and not restricted so vibration of the blood is accurately measured. It is also important to note that the different test methods may give slightly different readings due to the test methods or due to the normal fluctuation in blood pressure.

When To Talk With A Professional

Getting your blood pressure taken is a standard part of most medical appointments, but its not always the best way to get an understanding of your blood pressure. After all, your blood pressure is affected by the things you do throughout your day, and a single high or low reading might not reflect your normal blood pressure.

Want Your True Blood Pressure Avoid Wrist Monitors Experts Say

The researchers, who published their findings in the August issue of the Journal of Hypertension, say that the Klock wrist monitor “cannot compete” with the accuracy of the conventional method of taking blood pressure in the doctor’s office. Doctors use a blood pressure monitor that wraps around the upper arm so that the user can listen for changes in the sound of the pulse, found in the bend of the arm.

The researchers tested the Klock wrist device against standard blood pressure monitors on 255 patients, aged 18 to 95. They found that systolic blood pressures — the top number in a blood pressure reading — measured with the conventional monitor were 16 points lower, and that diastolic pressures — the bottom number — were lower by seven points than the readings obtained by the wrist device. In addition, the wrist monitors overestimated the higher systolic and diastolic pressures, and underestimated lower diastolic blood pressures.

The differences are noteworthy, say researchers, because many people use these monitors at home, and because doctors prescribe or change medication based on these blood pressure readings. If readings are off by 10 to 20 points, it could mean that patients receive incorrect doses of medication.

One major problem with the study, the researchers note, is that they only tested one brand of wrist monitor, and the results may not apply to other brands, but doctors aren’t convinced that any of the wrist monitors are accurate.

How Do You Use A Wrist Blood Pressure Monitor

The first and most important tool for an accurate at-home blood pressure reading is proper technique. How you monitor your blood pressure is just as important as the tools you use.

Stick to these three simple rules, and youll be an at-home blood pressure pro in no time:

  • Be consistent That means the same time of day and, if possible, the same location. If not, make sure youre seated in a similar chair with your arm resting at the same height
  • Stay still For 30 minutes prior be sure to avoid exercise, caffeine, and smoking
  • Cross your heart As in keeping the cuff directly across from your heart. With a wrist monitor, that means resting your elbow on a table and holding your wrist out and up at the same level as your heart for an accurate reading.
  • You may have heard rumors that wrist or upper arm blood pressure monitorsmay be preferred for different reasons but you have one main question: can you trust wrist blood, pressure monitors?

Theres no denying that the most accurate blood pressure readings are done with an upper-arm cuff in your doctors office. However, if used as directed , readings from clinically validated wrist cuffs are just as accurate as at-home readings from upper-arm cuffs.

Which provides the perfect segue to our next question.

    Applying The Wrist Cuff

The first thing is to make sure your wrist doesnt have any clothing over it. Its ideal to wear short sleeves or a pushed up long sleeve shirt. If youre rolling up a long sleeve, make sure its loose, if not it can create a tourniquet effect.

Applying a cuff over clothing can increase systolic between 10 and 50 mmHg higher 3.

The monitor should be on the inside of your wrist and forearm and tightened snug. There shouldnt be any loose space between the cuff and your skin but not too tight either. Take a look on the outside of your wrist where the bone protrudes on the little finger side. The cuff should not be covering the protrusion.

The edge of the cuff should be approximately 1/2 to 1 away from the crease of your wrist or where the bottom of your palm is.

How do you know which wrist to use? Its typical to have a slight difference in blood pressure between each arm. The arm that consistently has the higher readings should be the wrist to use 4.
