NEW YORK – A supplement containing olive leaf extract may help lower blood pressure and cholesterol in people on the brink of developing high blood pressure, a new study suggests.
The leaves of the olive tree have been used for medicinal purposes since ancient times, and modern lab research suggests that olive leaf extracts have antibacterial, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant actions. There is also evidence that the extracts have properties that could lower blood pressure.
The current study, published in the journal Phytotherapy Research, included 20 sets of identical twins with borderline hypertension — blood pressure that is above the optimal level of 120/80, but below the cutoff of 140/90 used to diagnose high blood pressure.
One member of each twin pair was given tablets containing olive leaf extract, while the other received no supplements but did get lifestyle advice on lowering blood pressure — the standard approach to managing borderline hypertension.
Half of the supplement users took 500 mg of olive leaf extract per day, and the other half took 1,000 mg.
After eight weeks, the study found, supplement users on the higher dose showed a substantial dip in their blood pressure overall — from an average of 137/80 to 126/76. They also saw their average level of bad LDL cholesterol fall.
The company makes the olive leaf extract used in the study, a product called Benolea.

Olive Leaf Lowers Blood Pressure

A clinical trial supports previous evidence that olive leaf extract may be an effective natural way to lower high blood pressure.
Olives and olive oil are key components of the traditional Mediterranean diet known to be associated with well documented health benefits. These foods are rich in a wide-range of phytonutrients, including oleuropein and hydroxytyrosol, which are in part responsible for the association with extra virgin olive oil and lower cardiovascular disease risk.
Olive leaf is richer in phytonutrients than both olives and olive oil, and has emerged as a potential natural product for cardiovascular health. Previous experimental and clinical studies indicate that olive leaf extract may be particularly useful for lowering high blood pressure, and major risk factor for heart disease and stroke.
A new clinical trial tested olive leaf extract vs. placebo in pre-hypertensive : 121140 mmHg diastolic blood pressure : 8190 mmHg) men at a dose of 10 ml twice daily for 6 weeks.
Olive leaf extract significantly reduced blood pressure, with a reduction in SBP by 3.33 and 3.95 mmHg and DBP by 2.42 and 3.00 mmHg for 24 h and daytime values, respectively. Olive leaf also resulted in reductions in plasma total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, triglycerides, and inflammation .
This finding suggests that phytonutrient-rich olives, extra virgin olive oil and olive leaf extract would be a useful addition to a healthy diet for cardiovascular risk reduction.
A Significant Impact At Population Level
The present study has strengthened the existing body of evidence that has the potential to favorably modify blood pressure and plasma lipid profiles, wrote the scientists.
The magnitude of the risk-lowering potential we describe could have significant impact at population level in countries with high prevalence of CVD. The impact of dietary factors towards CVD risk has informed the provision of a diet rich in fruit and vegetables in the primary prevention of hypertension and raised cholesterol.
In the near future, there may be enough evidence for this advice to be extended to include phenolic-rich foods. Daily consumption of can result in favorable improvements in several CVD risk factors which could result in a moderate but nonetheless significant reduction in risk, making it a useful addition to a healthy diet and lifestyle, they concluded.

Other Benefits Of Olive Leaf Extract
Olive leaf extract is not just for blood pressure. Its capable of addressing numerous other maladies as a result of both oleuropein and other elements contained within.
- Anti-pathogen: Oleuropein is a known promoter of the phagocytosis process. This is the mechanism by which immune cellsâcalled phagocytesâsurround, consume, and destroy invaders. Additionally, as much as oleuropein can interfere with free radical reactions, it also blocks the reproductive ability of certain viruses and pathogens, such as the flu. So not only can oleuropein promote the immune system, it can make sure there are fewer pathogens that need to be eliminated at the same time.
- Anti-cholesterol: As mentioned above, oleuropein interferes with the process that causes LDL cholesterol to adhere to blood vessel linings. This prevents cholesterol from building up and helps lower your overall level.
- Anti-cancer: Oleuropein is an inhibitor of certain cell lines that are involved in certain forms of breast cancer, skin cancer, and colon cancer. It is known to have a âtumorcidal effect,â meaning it kills tumor cells and restricts the growth of some tumors as well.

Numerous studies have shown that olive leaf extract significantly reduces blood pressure in people with hypertension or borderline hypertensionâto the point that those who are already on blood-pressure-lowering medication should consult with their doctor before supplementing with the oil since their levels could potentially drop too low.
In fact, olive leaf extract may be just as effective as prescription blood pressure medication for some people. In this study3, participants who took 500 mg of olive leaf extract twice a day for eight weeks experienced a comparable drop in blood pressure to those who took the medication Captopril.
Olive leaf extract is thought to lower blood pressure by acting as a calcium channel blocker, which relaxes and widens the blood vessels. In the same study, olive leaf extract also lowered triglyceride levels , while Captopril did not. This is important for heart health, as high triglyceride levels contribute to hardening of the arteries, or atherosclerosis, which increases the risk of heart attack and stroke.
Supplementing with olive leaf extract has also been found to lower total and LDL cholesterol in both animals and humans4 with high cholesterol. Researchers suspect that the polyphenols present in olive leaf extract, like oleuropein, decrease the activity of key cholesterol-regulatory enzymes, resulting in reduced cholesterol production.
It Holds Promise As A Natural Herpes Remedy
Thanks to its potent antiviral properties, olive leaf extract may even help treat the herpes simplex type-1 virus . This study found that olive leaf extract exhibited a significant antiviral activity against HSV type-1 virus in the lab. If you have herpes and want a more natural approach to managing symptoms, talk to your doctor about alternatives like olive leaf extract before making the switch on your own.
