How to Use Wrist Blood Pressure Monitor

While the 0604 can run on either battery power or with an AC adapter, unless there are working batteries installed, the machines date and time reset every time its unplugged. This doesnt affect the storage capacity on the app or device, but it does add a few extra seconds to testing time, which normally requires just a single click of the start button, and dates can become jumbled if programmed improperly .

When To See A Professional For A Blood Pressure Reading

Its important to see a healthcare provider for a blood pressure reading if youre concerned about your at-home blood pressure readings.

Your provider can also help you determine if your device is accurate, so you may want to bring it to your next appointment.

A single high blood pressure reading isnt necessarily a reason for alarm, so if you get one concerning reading, take it a few more times with a long rest break in between before contacting your doctor.

If your readings are unusually high after twenty minutes, and you are having any symptoms like headache, vision changes, nausea, shortness of breath, or chest pain contact your doctor or be seen in an ER right away.

Its possible you could be experiencing a hypertensive crisis, which is a severe increase in blood pressure that can cause a stroke or other medical emergencies.

If you have high blood pressure readings without any symptoms, this is not typically an emergency, but should be discussed with your doctor as soon as possible.

Tips Of How To Use A Wrist Blood Pressure Monitor

Blood pressure monitorsare extremely sensitive to body position. To get an accurate reading when taking your blood pressure with a wrist monitor, your arm and wrist must be at heart level. Even then, blood pressure measurements taken at the wrist are usually higher and less accurate than those taken at your upper arm.

Thats because the wrist arteries are narrower and not as deep under your skin as those of the upper arm.

Some people cant have their blood pressure measured at the upper arm because they have a very large arm or find blood pressure measurements painful. In these cases, measuring blood pressure at the wrist is acceptable.

Its common for blood pressure readings taken at home on any type of monitor to be different from those taken at your doctors office. If you have a wrist blood pressure monitor, its a good idea to take your monitor to a doctors appointment.

Your doctor can then check your blood pressure with both a standard upper arm monitor and a wrist monitor in the correct position in the same arm to check your wrist blood pressure monitors accuracy.

Also, make sure to use a validated device.

When To Talk With A Professional

Getting your blood pressure taken is a standard part of most medical appointments, but its not always the best way to get an understanding of your blood pressure. After all, your blood pressure is affected by the things you do throughout your day, and a single high or low reading might not reflect your normal blood pressure.

Of the Bluetooth-capable smart monitors we tested, Omrons Evolv emerged as a panel favorite in 2019 and, after our 2021 testing, remains our favorite all-in-one device. While some all-in-one smart blood pressure monitors require syncing to your phone to view readings, the Evolv can be used with or without the Omron Connect app. That is, you dont need to have your phone nearby to get your blood pressure readingit is displayed directly on the screen, as well. The Evolv is included in both the US Blood Pressure Validated Device Listing and Stride BP Validated Devices List its also been validated for home use by the British and Irish Hypertension Society, meaning it has either met the standards established by three separate international protocols or achieved a minimum B grade for both systolic and diastolic measurements based on other criteria.

The cuff and the monitor of the Evolv are one conjoined unit, but its still lightweight and easy to put on thanks to a preformed ring you slip your arm through before tightening the Velcro closure. Unfortunately, this preformed ring made it uncomfortable for some testers with arms measuring on the higher end of the cuffs circumference range you can stretch that ring as you put your arm through to avoid this discomfort, but its not ideal.

How To Use Your Blood Pressure Monitor

Wrist blood pressure monitor How to use to get accurate result | Video instruction by Paramed

Taking care of your heart health is important. However, taking your own blood pressure measurements can seem daunting at first. But it doesnt have to be. Here is our quick and easy guide to a healthier and more confident you.

In order to get an accurate measurement, it is important to follow these rules:

  • Always take readings at the same time of day, under the same conditions. Always measure on the same arm. The left arm is recommended.
  • Do not take a measurement within 30 minutes of smoking, drinking coffee or tea or any form of exertion. These factors will influence the measurement.
  • Ensure at least 5 minutes of quiet rest before measurements. If possible, it is recommended to rest 10 minutes before taking the measurement. Try to always use the same resting time before taking a measurement.
  • If you want to take multiple measurements, wait approximately 3 minutes before repeating a measurement.

Monitoring Blood Pressure5 Key Points

POINT1Make sure you are comfortable and relaxed

Your physical or mental conditions immediately before measuring your blood pressure affect your readings. So if you are frustrated or nervous, you won’t be able to take an accurate reading. Before measuring your blood pressure, rest in a chair for 1 or 2 minutes. It’s recommended that you take 5 or 6 deep breaths before you start the measurement.

POINT2Empty your bladder and bowels

Measure your blood pressure several minutes after you have emptied your bladder and bowels. Do not measure your blood pressure when you have an urge to urinate or defecate.

POINT3Sit on a chair with your legs flat on the floor and secure the cuff to your arm/wrist

Maintaining a correct sitting posture and correct application of the cuff are the keys for getting accurate blood pressure readings. Sit up straight with your back against the chair and keep relaxed, with your legs uncrossed. To make the height of your arm or wrist aligned with the heart level , adjust the height of the desk with a book or cushion if the desk is too low. The cuff should be wrapped snuggly and securely.

POINT4Measure your blood pressure at about the same time each day

Checking blood pressure readings regularly over a long period makes your monitored data more effective in the detection and prevention of hypertension. Choose the time period when you are in the most stable condition and take a blood pressure reading at about the same time each day.

What Is High Blood Pressure

A blood pressure reading, such as 120/80, includes systolic and diastolic pressure readings. While a normal blood pressure reading is 120/80 or lower, a high systolic reading is cause for concern. Prehypertension occurs when the systolic reading is between 130 and 139, and the diastolic reading is between 80 and 89. Numbers higher than these indicate high blood pressure, or hypertension.

  • Causes: Hypertension is often a symptom of an underlying condition. Your risk for high blood pressure increases if you are a smoker or heavy drinker, older than 60, overweight, sedentary, or experiencing chronic stress.High blood pressure may also be the result of a poor diet that includes high amounts of sodium. Certain health conditions also cause high blood pressure . Some medications may also have an adverse effect on blood pressure. Genetics play a large part in determining your risk factors for high blood pressure, so a family history of the condition increases your risk, too.

Which Arm To Take Blood Pressure

Blood Pressure Monitor Automatic Digital Heart Beat Rate ...

Left or right? There is no correct general answer to this question. Knowing which arm to use is different for everyone. At an initial doctor visit, they should take your blood pressure in each arm and record both.

Whichever arm has the higher blood pressure should be the arm used for each subsequent reading .

In addition, taking blood pressure in each arm can diagnose a more serious medical condition like peripheral artery disease and aortic dissection. A difference of 10 mm Hg or less between arms is typical and usually not a concern.

If there is a larger difference between arms, there may be a medical condition like PAD.

A 69 year old women was misdiagnosed because the medical staff failed to check BP in both arms. This resulted in a whole series of unfortunate events and medication.
