What Are The Cons Of Donating Plasma

1. It can wear out the body. Donating plasma occasionally is just as safe as any other donation, but it does wear out the human body after some time. It is not uncommon for someone making regular donations to have their veins collapse or have difficulty in finding a vein that can be used for a donation. This means that some folks may be stuck at their donation center for an unexpected period of time because they wont be released until they are judged to be in a stable physical condition.

2. Donating plasma can be scary and uncomfortable. Most people are required to drink two full glasses of water right before the plasma donation begins. This is because the donation process only works if the person donating plasma is fully hydrated. The first donation a person makes also involves a lot of questions that are personal in nature, like a sexual history questionnaire.

3. It could be detrimental to a persons long term health. Although a donation here or there isnt generally going to cause much harm, there is the potential that regular plasma donations could damage long-term health. Researchers have noticed that there can be a 10% reduction in the antibodies that can be produced by the human body when regular plasma donations are occurring.

Can I Donate Blood If I Have Low Blood Pressure

June 14 is World Blood Donor Day, and it comes just two days after the mass shooting in Orlando. The sheer number of casualties during the Pulse shooting generated an immediate need for blood, and reminded the world how crucial giving blood can be. If you’re interested in being a blood donor, there are a few questions that might be on your mind, like can you donate blood if you have low blood pressure? There are a bunch of different factors that determine whether you can or cannot donate blood, so here’s what you need to know.

The World Health Organization has made this year’s World Blood Donor Day theme “Blood Connects Us All,” which is particularly poignant in the wake of the shooting. And, although Orlando specifically is working hard to replenish its blood supply, it’s not the only location that needs a constant stream of donations. According to the American Red Cross, someone in the U.S. needs blood every two seconds, and a single car accident victim can require as many as 100 pints of blood. Donating blood can save lives, and it doesn’t require anything other than patience and a willingness to feel a little dizzy.

But not everybody can donate. It’s an unfortunate fact that sexually active gay men are not permitted to donate blood. That’s due to an FDA regulation, but other factors, like height and weight, genetic blood disorders, and drug use can also prevent donation.

How Can I Control My Blood Pressure Enough To Continue Donating Blood

So, for a few months, I have been donating plasma. There is a blood pressure requirement to be able to donate. My readings had always come out rather high on their machine, so I actually went to my doctor, who said they were not accurate. For example, a reading on the plasma center machine was 163/101 the day after I went to the doctor, where it was 140/80. The cutoff for donating is 180/100.

Well, I thought perhaps it was white coat syndrome for the plasma center and as you are allowed to try again the next day if your readings are out of range. It has been three weeks since I have been able to donate, getting deferred for my blood pressure every time. I tried downloading the track ‘Lower Your Blood Pressure’, hoping that would help. When I tried donating recently, my reading on their machine was 170/121.

Is this more of a panic thing vs. white coat syndrome? Should I be trying a different download? I know it seems silly, but this is a source of income for my family and I just can’t understand why I am having so much trouble all of a sudden after being fine for so long. 🙁

I do feel a sense of dread now in my chest/stomach going in, knowing I will be walking right out. This seems so silly, I can’t understand why my body is responding this way.

The American Red Cross advises that healthy donors may donate whole red blood cells every 56 days , or Power Red every 112 days . A healthy donor may donate platelets as few as 7 days apart, but a maximum of 24 times a year. During platelet donation, both arms are used because one arm extracts the blood and runs it thought a special machine, which extracts the platelets, then sends the remaining blood components back out of the machine and into the opposite arm.

Side Effects Of Donating Plasma

Donating plasma can have side effects that are typically minor, but if its your first time donating, you may wish to have a ride home, just in case. Bruising and nerve irritation are among the most common, usually around the injection site. It may have mild swelling, which can be treated with cold packs. Nerve irritation causes immediate, intense pain at the injection site and can cause shooting pain down the arm and into the hand. If this happens, alert the technician theyll immediately remove the needle. This should eliminate the stabbing pain, although some mild discomfort may remain for a day or two afterward.

More serious risks of donating plasma may be a drop in blood pressure, which can result in light-headedness or fainting. Some people experience this as a result of fear of needles or having blood drawn. Other possible side effects include sweating and paleness, weakness, sudden warmness, or nausea or vomiting. Dizziness and blurred or tunnel vision may also occur.

More serious risks of donating plasma may be a drop in blood pressure, which can result in light-headedness or fainting.

If a mild reaction occurs, the donation is typically paused, calcium may be given to you to eliminate these side effects of donating plasma. However, with a severe citrate reaction, the donation process is halted. You may need emergency attention.

Cannabis Smokers And Donation

Lower Hypertension (HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE) without any medication

Generally,; smoking weed or cannabis in itself doesnt disqualify you from blood donation but theres more to it. The clinic is likely to turn you away if you show up to your appointment visibly high on the substance.

This information can be confirmed by a publication by the American Red Cross that stated that While the Red Cross does not encourage the use of controlled substances, marijuana, cigarettes or alcohol use does not necessarily disqualify a person from giving blood. Potential donors cannot give while under the influence of licit or illicit drugs or alcohol. Legal or illegal use of marijuana is not otherwise a cause of deferral.

Its obvious smoking weed or Cannabis doesnt in itself disqualify you from donating plasma but other associated effects it may have on your health do limit your chance.

Is Donating Plasma Painful

Whether the process is painful for you depends on your pain threshold. For some people, donating feels no worse than a pinprick, while others may feel more pain. If the nurse misses the vein or you experience plasma donation side effects, its possible youll experience more pain, but overall, most people report nothing more than mild discomfort.;

Feeling Faint Or Dizzy

The loss of fluid can lead to dehydration and cause some people to feel lightheaded during and after the donation.

This reaction is common and usually mild. Donation center staff encourage people to rest and have a drink and a snack after the process is over, to counter any lightheadedness.

During the donation, if a person experiences any of the following, the attendant may stop the procedure:

  • low blood pressure
  • sweating, twitching, or weakness

The person will then likely need to rest with their feet raised and drink some fluids.

Don’t Miss: What Does Hypertension Feel Like

High Blood Pressure And Low Blood Pressure

HYPERTENSIONmeans elevated blood pressure . Higher than 140 over 90, 140/90, but some doctors allow higher reading. Salt may increase the reading, so you may want to cut back a little. If you are already on medication for hypertension and its still high, let the doctor know and they would probably adjust or changes something.

Hypertension may wear out your arteries like you wearing out the garden hose under pressure. High blood pressure increases your chance for heart attacks, strokes, kidney, and eye problems. There are many natural or non-drug activities you can do to get your hypertension under control.

HYPOTENSION means a low blood pressure and it would be consistent readings less than 80/60 consistently. If you are very athletic, your body may have adjusted to these lower readings. If you are ever hospitalized, do yourself a big favour and tell someone your BP will naturally be lower.

You may feel proud of your low blood pressure but think this through, you may realize that reduced amounts of oxygen, chemicals, or nutrients will also reaching the cells, any cells. Somehow I dont think that maintains a healthy lifestyle. So it is just as important to take regular readings if you suffer from hypotension as for hypertension.
