A recent study published in the Journal of the American Heart Association found that caffeinated energy drinks altered the hearts electrical activity and raised brachial and central blood pressure. The study, which was paid for by University of the Pacific, took place over a six-month period and featured 34 healthy volunteers between the ages of 18 and 40 years old. In the study, researchers noted that those who consumed energy drinks, and not a placebo, significantly prolonged their QTc intervals, which is the time it takes for the ventricles of the heart to contract and relax.

While the impact of long-term energy drinks consumption remains unknown, researchers also concluded that these findings warrant further investigation on whether individual ingredients or a combination of them leads to these changes.

This most recent study is not the first. In fact, in 2015 a group at the Mayo Clinic presented a study demonstrating that a single energy drink raised the drinkers blood pressure and cortisol levels , sparking numerous investigations into the health effects of these super-caffeinated cocktails.

Most of the ingredients in energy drinks individually dont cause harm but what we still dont know is the synergistic effect of all those things, Sodexo Wellness dietitian Debbie Petitpain said. You make a cocktail out of all of them, and who knows?

Higher Or Lower Blood Pressure From Energy Drinks

Many people claim that caffeine can affect your blood pressure. For this reason, your doctor may advise that you avoid it before getting your blood pressure checked. This way, they assume that the tests will be accurate. But is there any truth to this? Is there a relationship between the two? Well, other studies state that its intake would have an inverse effect on blood pressure. That instead of raising it, the substance would work in lowering the blood pressure.

With all this confusion, scientists from the US and Switzerland decided to perform a test. With this, they could tell if there was any truth to the previous studies. And in doing so, they could put peoples minds to rest. They involved fifteen volunteers in their research, six of whom were avid consumers of the same.

Of these subjects, all were healthy, with no previous blood pressure issues. Also, their parents were free of such issues, as this would predispose them to spikes in their pressure levels. During the tests, the scientists administered caffeine in various quantities to the subjects.

Some of it was oral in the form of a triple espresso and decaffeinated drinks. Some of it was in intravenous form, including a salt solution. They studied the subjects all this time, taking in any changes in their heart rates, blood pressure, and nervous system.

Energy drinks are a growing industry with a market value predicted to reach $61 billion by 2021.

It is estimated that about 30% of teenagers between the ages of 12 through 17 years in the U.S. consume energy drinks on a regular basis.

Energy drinks are readily accessible and commonly consumed by a large number of teens and young adults, including college students, said University of the Pacifics Professor Kate ODell, co-author of the study.

Understanding how these drinks affect the heart is extremely important.

The study enrolled 34 healthy volunteers between the ages of 18 and 40 years.

Participants were randomly assigned to drink 32 ounces of one of two commercially available caffeinated energy drinks or a placebo drink on three separate days. The drinks were consumed within a 60-min period but no faster than one 16-ounce bottle in 30 min.

Both energy beverages tested contained 304 to 320 mg of caffeine per 32 fluid ounces .

Other common ingredients in the energy drinks in the study included taurine, glucuronolactone and B vitamins. The placebo drink contained carbonated water, lime juice and cherry flavoring.

Young Americans Ages 12

Energy drinks are popular among teenagers and young adults and about 30% of young Americans between the ages of 12 and 17 consume energy drinks on a regular basis. Unfortunately, this has been linked to health emergencies that led to emergency room visits at hospitals and death.

The researchers say that health care professionals should caution people with heart problems and/or high blood pressures about the danger of consuming energy drinks and advise them to cut down on them or stop.

Taurine is also present in high concentrations in the brain, where it is the second most prevalent amino acid after GABA .

Energy drinks might give you some pep but they might also be priming you for heart problems, a new study finds.

Researchers found that energy drinks can raise blood pressure to potentially unhealthy levels. The effect was far more prominent in young adults who did not consume caffeine regularly, according to the study, presented March 14 at an American College of Cardiology meeting in San Diego.

In this study, the research team led by Dr. Anna Svatikova, a cardiovascular-diseases fellow at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota gave a can of a commercially available energy drink to 25 healthy volunteers, whose ages ranged from 19 to 40. On a different day, the participants drank the same amount of a placebo drink. The researchers measured the participants’ heart rate and blood pressure before and after the drinks.

The participants experienced a more marked rise in blood pressure after consuming the energy drink than after drinking the placebo, according to the findings. The participants’ average systolic blood pressure increased by 3 percent more after they drank an energy drink, compared with after they drank the placebo drink.

Even a small increase in blood pressure can have deadly consequences, depending on your age and resting blood pressure, said Sachin Shah, an associate professor of pharmacy at the University of the Pacific in Stockton, California, who was not involved in the study.
