Does Melatonin Raise Blood Pressure

When To See Your Doctor

Effect of melatonin on nocturnal blood pressure – Video abstract: 24603

Check in with your doctor whenever you have concerns about your general health. If you have any of the risk factors for high cholesterol, a quick blood test can reveal a lot and allow your doctor to take action. Sometimes lifestyles changes are enough to whip your numbers back into shape. Your doctor can also prescribe statin drugs to lower your cholesterol if necessary.

Trouble sleeping is another issue you may want to bring to your healthcare providers attention. Even an additional hour of sleep each night can shift your numbers, so try to head to bed a bit earlier tonight. Relaxation techniques like yoga and meditation are great for unwinding before bedtime. If these home methods dont help, your doctor can point you in the right direction or possibly prescribe medication.

Melatonin May Worsen Heart Condition

15-Sep-2003

Melatonin supplements, often taken to help insomniacs and jet-lagged travellers sleep, may make it dangerous for those with cardiovascular problems to stand, reported a researcher in yesterday’s issue of the Journal of Physiology.

The study by Chester A. Ray, associate professor of medicine at Penn State College of Medicine, suggests that melatonin supplements may make symptoms worse for the half a million people – many of them women and the elderly – with orthostatic intolerance, a condition in which the cardiovascular system cannot maintain adequate blood pressure and blood flow to the brain when a person stands, causing dizziness and fainting.

“Melatonin supplements can hinder nervous system responses that enable the body to compensate for the drop in blood pressure when a person moves from a seated to standing position,” said Ray.

Melatonin is a hormone made by the pineal gland in the brain and secreted at night on a circadian, or 24 hour, cycle, to make people feel sleepy. Available in synthetic form, dietary supplements of melatonin have been linked to improved sleep, prevention of jet lag, and more. Studies have also shown that melatonin supplementation may reduce blood pressure and decrease blood plasma levels of norepinephrine, a neurotransmitter responsible for raising blood pressure.

Melatonin is also taken by astronauts in space, two-thirds of whom experience orthostatic intolerance immediately after touchdown on Earth.

Side Effects Of Melatonin: What Are The Risks

Pressed for time: the circadian clock and hypertension

Melatonin is a hormone and dietary supplement commonly used as a sleep aid.

Although it has an outstanding safety profile, melatonins growing popularity has raised some concerns.

These concerns are mainly due to a lack of research on its long-term effects, as well as its wide-ranging effects as a hormone.

This article reviews the potential side effects of melatonin supplements.

Melatonin is a neurohormone produced by the pineal glands in your brain, mainly at night.

It prepares your body for sleep and is sometimes called the hormone of sleep or hormone of darkness.

Melatonin supplements are frequently used as a sleep aid. They help you fall asleep, improve sleep quality, and increase sleep duration. However, they dont appear to be as effective as many other sleep medications .

Sleep isnt the only body function melatonin affects. This hormone also plays a role in your bodys antioxidant defenses and helps regulate blood pressure, body temperature, and cortisol levels, as well as sexual and immune function .

In the United States, melatonin is available over the counter. Since June 2021, it has also been available over the counter in Australia for people over 55 .

In contrast, its a prescription drug in most European countries and approved for use only in older adults with sleep disorders (

However, the Food and Drug Administration has neither approved its use nor evaluated its safety in children.

How To Increase Melatonin Levels Naturally

You can increase your melatonin levels without supplementing.

A few hours before bedtime, dim all lights at home and avoid watching TV and using your computer or smartphone.

Too much artificial light can reduce the production of melatonin in your brain, making it harder for you to fall asleep .

You can also strengthen your sleep-wake cycle by exposing yourself to plenty of natural light during the day, especially in the morning (

How Can I Use This Information To Optimize My Melatonin Levels For Metabolic Health

2-Minute Neuroscience: Melatonin

Learning your melatonin levels requires a blood test. If youre curious about yours, you can either ask your doctor or use an at-home blood testing service. A continuous glucose monitor or glucometer will also allow you to see patterns in your glucose levels.

There is no universally accepted optimal level of melatonin. In fact, melatonin levels change on a daily basis and are highly individual to each person. The best way to test your melatonin levels is to take multiple readings at different times to see what your body would normally produce throughout the day and night.

If the Time Model hypothesis is correct , there may be steps you can take to keep melatonin at your optimal levels and subsequently have a better effect on your bodys blood sugar levels.

The first is to pay close attention to meal times. Youll want to avoid eating when melatonin levels are naturally high, like at nighttime. This would mean eating an earlier dinner and avoiding late-night snacking, which may result in better glucose tolerance. Doing this may also have additional health benefits, as studies show late dinners may impair glucose tolerance and promote obesity. Melatonin levels are typically still elevated early in the mornings so moving breakfast slightly later may also improve glycemic control.

Melatonin Reduces Blood Pressure And Tunes Up Disrupted Circadian Rhythms In The Elderly

Increased blood pressure and reduced robustness of circadian rhythms are frequently reported in elderly subjects. The present study was aimed to investigate whether such changes can be reversed by daily melatonin ingestion.

Bentham Science Publishers

The older we get, the more likely our circadian rhythms are disrupted. For example, blood pressure , not only tends to increase but as well become more irregular. Luckily, as we show in our research, melatonin helps to ameliorate both trends.

63 senior respondents of a mean age of 80 were studied during 3 consecutive weeks. First week control data were collected for 7 successive days. Over the next 2 weeks, the seniors were administered a low dose of melatonin each day by night at 10:30 p.m. On the third week data were monitored again.

Melatonin significantly reduced BP. The hypotensive effect was dependent on time. The maximum systolic BP lowering effect of melatonin falls between 3:00 and 8:00 in the morning, the time of the highest risk of heart attacks and strokes. Nighttime and morning BP decreased more profoundly on average -8/3.5 mm Hg for SBP/DBP, respectively.

Moreover, the higher the mean systolic BP was during the first week, the more it dropped on the second week of melatonin administration. Melatonin also decreased the overall variability in BP.

Best Form Of Melatonin

When it comes to melatonin supplements, Dr. Reiter prefers the sublingual form. The advantage of taking melatonin under the tongue is that the first pass through the liver is delayed, he said.

Whenever you swallow a tablet or capsule, it has to go through the digestive process and then be processed by the liver before it enters the bodys general circulation. Not only is this process long, but its likely that some of the substance in the pill or capsule will be lost.

The sublingual tablets dissolve in roughly 15 minutes, and shortly thereafter most of the melatonin is probably absorbed, Dr. Reiter said. You get more bang for your buck this way. For the past 17 years, hes been taking three 5 mg tablets at before bedtime.

Because most products have from 1 to 3 mg or less, you may think 15 mg is a lot. But as Dr. Reiter pointed out, the commercial] dosages are not based on anything scientific. I think they are too low. We dont take sufficient amounts of melatonin, but the problem is that nobody knows the optimum amount.

Taking Blood Pressure Medication At Night Improves Survival

Melatonin for Sleep

This effect of melatonin may also explain why shifting the time of taking antihypertensive therapy to evening hours rather than the morning, improves blood pressure control. This was shown in a study involving 2,156 people with hypertension who were asked to either take all their antihypertensive medications upon awakening, or to take at least one of them at bedtime.

Those taking their medication at bedtime showed a better night-time dipping pattern of blood pressure and better overall control of blood pressure. Whats more, after an average follow-up time of 5.6 years, those taking at least one antihypertensive medication at bedtime had significantly fewer cardiovascular events than those taking all their medications on waking their relative risk of heart attack, stroke and cardiovascular death was reduced by 41% ! In fact, taking blood pressure medications at bedtime was the most significant predictor of event-free survival.

Other studies suggest that taking diuretics at bed time can also reduce sleep disturbances due to having to visit the bathroom to have a wee.

Can You Take Melatonin If You Are Taking Other Prescription Drugs

If youre on prescription drugs, always talk to your doctor before starting a melatonin supplement, Breus emphasizes. This is especially critical if youre using any of these prescription medications:

  • anti-seizure drugs: melatonin can reduce the effectiveness of anticonvulsants and interfere with medications for epilepsy
  • blood pressure medications: melatonin can increase blood pressure in people taking drugs for hypertension
  • blood thinners: when taken with anticoagulants and antiplatelet drugs, melatonin may increase the risk of bleeding
  • diabetes medications: melatonin can raise blood glucose levels in diabetics
  • immunosuppressants: melatonin can interfere with immunosuppressive therapy
  • medication to treat obsessive-compulsive disorder: melatonin can magnify the sedative effect of central nervous system depressants

How Melatonin Affects Blood Sugar: What The Research Shows

Numerous studies have been conducted looking at how melatonin levels affect glucose. To date, no consensus has been reached. Some studies have yielded findings that higher melatonin levels are beneficial to metabolic health while others show it has a harmful effect.

For example, some research suggests that at a cellular level, melatonin is important for the survival and function of beta cells, which are responsible for producing insulin, the hormone that controls the level of glucose in the blood.

Additionally, a study published in JAMA found that low levels of melatonin in the blood were independently associated with an increased risk of insulin resistance and Type 2 diabetes. Another study published in the American Journal of Epidemiology looked at 1,075 generally healthy, non-obese women. The researchers found that higher nighttime melatonin levels were linked to greater insulin sensitivity and a lower prevalence of insulin resistance.

In a study published in the journal, Clinical Endocrinology researchers administered either 1 mg of melatonin or a placebo to 22 postmenopausal women first thing in the morning. The participants then underwent glucose tolerance testing 45 minutes later. The researchers found that those who received the melatonin had reduced glucose tolerance and insulin sensitivity.

The consumption of melatonin has increased drastically in Denmark. The sale of melatonin increased from 2 million daily doses every quarter in 2015 to 6 million daily doses in the first quarter of 2021.

In Denmark, people increasingly take melatonin to improve their sleep, but does it have other effects on the body?

New research in Denmark shows that taking melatonin pills can also affect some gut hormones that are essential for maintaining stable blood glucose levels .

According to a researcher behind the study, the results indicate that we should think twice before prescribing melatonin for people with sleep disorders.

For many years, people have thought that melatonin is a natural sleep hormone that is not associated with significant adverse effects. We are investigating this through several studies, and so far they indicate that melatonin is not completely free of negative effects in glucose metabolism, explains Esben Lauritzen, PhD student and doctor at Steno Diabetes Center Aarhus and Steno Medical Research Laboratory, Aarhus University Hospital.

The research has been published in The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism.
