A Note For Red Wine Lovers
Research has not proven that wine is linked to lowering blood pressure, says James Beckerman, MD, a cardiologist at the Providence St. Vincent Heart Clinic in Portland, OR.
A Dutch study showed that heart-healthy nutrients called polyphenols in red wine help prevent heart disease, but not because of a drop in blood pressure. Research shows that the polyphenols improve the cells lining the blood vessels, and do improve blood flow and heart health. The jury is still out, though, on whether this could potentially improve high blood pressure in severe cases.
Klatsky agrees. âOne glass of red wine isnât going to improve your blood pressure,â he says. âUltimately, itâs lifestyle changes: low salt, optimal weight and exercise, and medication if necessary.â
Do you shudder at the thought of giving up your vino altogether? If youâve been advised against drinking for very high blood pressure, there may be salvation in one kind of wine: nonalcoholic.
One study found that three glasses of nonalcoholic red wine a day over a month led to a significant drop in blood pressure in men with heart disease risk factors. But men who drank red wine with alcohol, or 3 ounces of gin, had no change in their blood pressure. Researchers think that the alcohol in the wine weakens any antioxidant benefit to blood pressure.
How Much Alcohol Is Safe For Hypertension Patients
Alcohol has been well studied in relation to high blood pressure, and while some clinical studies suggest that moderate consumption can be used to lower blood pressure, most experts recommend refraining from any alcohol use to maintain good overall health.
In addition to an increased risk for cardiovascular issues, consuming more than three alcoholic drinks daily can increase the risk for high blood pressure by 70%.
Cutting down on alcohol can be challenging for heavy drinkers, whereas those who drink socially may be able to avoid alcohol more easily.
Hypertension patients who need to limit their alcohol should do so at a slow and steady pace. Reduce drinks over several weeks as blood pressure could rise significantly if heavy drinkers stop use abruptly.
High blood pressure patients who do consume alcohol are advised to limit drinks in accordance to age and existing health condition.
Moderation is key and can be defined as two alcoholic drinks daily for males under 65 years of age and one daily glass for older men. Women are advised to limit alcohol beverages to one per day at any age.
One drink may be a 12-oz. glass of beer, a 5-oz. glass of wine, or a 1.5-oz. glass of spirits.
Alcohol And Blood Pressure: Final Thoughts
While alcohol may have a profound effect on blood pressure levels, the results of long-term use will vary among individuals and depend on any existing health conditions they may have.
Scientists believe that alcohol increases the force of blood against the artery walls due to its effects on the central nervous system, baroreceptors, sympathetic nervous system, renin-angiotensin system, stress hormones, and endothelial cells. The exact cause behind this is yet to be determined.
Hypertension may be managed and reduced by following a healthy lifestyle, diet, and limiting alcohol intake.

While earlier research has suggested that light and moderate alcohol consumption reduces the risk of dying from cardiovascular disease, a new study has a different finding.
This study certainly adds a twist to the notion that moderate alcohol consumption is beneficial for cardiovascular health, said Dr. Gregory Marcus, director of clinical research, Division of Cardiology, at the University of California, San Francisco, who was not involved in the study.

Findings Show An Association But Not That Moderate Drinking Causes Hypertension
The findings are somewhat limited by the makeup of the study population, says Makin. All of them had diabetes, and a majority of them had a long-standing duration of diabetes and were primarily men and of white ethnicity, she says. This means the findings may not translate to people who do not have diabetes or who are newly diagnosed or are women or are of a different ethnicity than white, says Makin.
Other limitations include the way the amount of drinking was calculated, she says. It was reported at a point in time and might have been underestimated. This method of data collection does not take into account varying degrees of alcohol consumption over time, says Makin.
The authors also point out that the data on alcohol was self-reported, and there was no adjustment for alcohol consumption according to gender. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention , moderate drinking for women is up to one drink per day, not up to two per day as it is for men.
A further limitation is that the study wasnt set up to determine causation, says Dr. Singleton. Therefore, we cannot be sure that it is the alcohol consumption that causes the hypertension, as they might both be caused by a common factor that is not yet discovered, he adds.
