How Do I Know If I Have Put On The Arm Cuff Correctly

Omron Blood Pressure Monitors Advanced Accuracy Overview

We recommend you apply the cuff using the following directions. First, make sure you have removed any tight-fitting clothing from your left arm. Put your left arm through the cuff loop. The bottom of the cuff should be about one-half inch above your elbow. Turn your arm so your palm is facing up. Adjust the cuff around your arm so that the tubing runs down the center of your arm. Secure the cuff so it stays in place.

D-Ring Cuff: You should be able to fit one finger between the cuff and your arm. This space is imperative for an accurate reading because Omrons digital blood pressure monitors use the oscillometric method of blood pressure measurement that detects your bloods movement through your brachial artery and converts the movements into a digital reading.

ComFit Cuff: The cuff should be wrapped tightly around the arm. If the cuff slips or easily turns, the cuff should be tightened. If the cuff is wrapped too loose or too tight, you may get an inaccurate reading of error message. For more detailed directions, please refer to the instruction manual for the specific model.

Home Blood Pressure Monitors Inaccurate

Up to a Third May Give Imprecise Blood Pressure

May 16, 2003 — As many as one in three people who use home blood pressure monitors to keep tabs on their high blood pressure may be getting inaccurate readings from their devices. A new study shows that up to 35% of home blood pressure monitors provided readings that were considered unacceptable.

Researchers say home blood pressure monitoring is a valuable tool for people with high blood pressure. Taking blood pressure measurements at home can often provide a more accurate assessment because the patient is more comfortable and less likely to experience the temporary rise in blood pressure that accompanies a doctor’s office visit, known as “white coat hypertension.”

To determine if the readings provided by digital home blood pressure monitors were accurate, researchers asked their high blood pressure patients to bring in their monitors for evaluation. A total of 129 home blood pressure monitors were collected over a period of two years. The results of the study were presented today at the American Society of Hypertension’s Eighteenth Annual Scientific Meeting in New York City.

First, all of the home blood pressure monitors were initially screened to see if they had an arm cuff that was the proper size for the user.

If the cuff size was unacceptable, further testing was performed using the correct cuff size.

Which One Is More Accurate: Manual Or Automatic Blood Pressure Monitor

  • Digital non-portable automatic inflation for the upper arm
  • Digital portable automatic inflation for the upper arm, wrist, or finger

Monitors with the automatic arm cuff are more accurate than the manual, wrist, and finger monitors.

When you purchase a monitor with an inflatable upper arm cuff, you must make sure the cuff is the right size. Otherwise, you will receive inaccurate numbers. If you are in a store, try on the cuffs of different monitors to see which one fits the best. Also, go to the store to try on different size cuffs to see which one fits the best before you make an online purchase.

You do not have to spend a lot of money to buy the most accurate BP monitor. Many of the best at-home monitors are less than $100.
