What About Herbal And Dietary Supplements

You can read on the Internet or hear advice in health food stores from nonphysicians about dozens of unproven herbs, vitamins, minerals, homeopathic products, and other dietary supplements that promise to help you control your blood pressure. Taking advice from such sources is fraught with danger, as they are not medically licensed to make such recommendations, and there is no OTC product that is proven safe or effective in lowering high blood pressure. Rather, you should seek care from a legitimate health care professional .

Remember, if you have questions, Consult Your Pharmacist.

Which Allergy Medications Affect My Blood Pressure

You should avoid decongestants if you have high blood pressure or heart problems. Decongestants constrict blood vessels to open nasal passages and facilitate breathing. Because decongestants constrict blood vessels throughout your body, they can worsen hypertension. Additionally, decongestants stimulate the release of norepinephrine in your body, which raises your blood pressure and your heart rate.

When choosing an allergy medication, be aware of combination products that contain decongestants. Products that contain a decongestant typically have the words sinus, cold, congestion, or on the label. They may also be labeled with the letters D, PD, or PE after the name.

Examples of allergy medicines that contain decongestants include the following:

  • Allegra D
  • Benadryl D
  • Clarinex D
  • Claritin D
  • Sudafed Sinus and Allergy
  • Zyrtec D

The list above is a small sample of allergy medications that contain decongestants. Always check with your pharmacist before choosing allergy medications.

Preparing To Use Flonase

  • 1Learn how Flonase works. It’s a corticosteroid that stops your body from releasing the chemicals that cause allergies.XResearch source It is specific to symptoms caused by allergies, and will not relieve similar symptoms with other causes. For example, it will stop a runny nose from allergies, but not from a cold. In the past, doctors prescribed it if you had constant allergy symptoms that don’t respond to over the counter medications. Recently, though, Flonase was approved for over the counter use, and may be available at your pharmacy.
  • Intranasal steroids like Flonase act on many inflammatory substances and help block the body from producing them while antihistamines block only the histamine release.
  • 2Be aware of the side effects.XResearch source There are two types of side effects for this medication. Because it is administered as a nasal spray, you may experience nosebleeds, headaches, sneezing, and dry or irritated nose and throat. Because it is a corticosteroid, you may experience upper respiratory infections, cataracts or glaucoma, and slower growth rate in children who use it for a prolonged time period. Less common side effects also include diarrhea and abdominal pain.

    Allergy Medication And Hypertension

Some allergy medicines can affect your blood pressure or interact with your blood pressure medication. Don’t fret! There are safe options out there for treating your allergy symptoms relative to your high blood pressure and we will review them here.

While most antihistamines are generally safe to take with your blood pressure medication, we want you to keep in mind the following drug interactions if you are taking medicines for your blood pressure:

    • Fexofenadine and Carvedilol : This may increase the side effects of fexofenadine. You may want to use fexofenadine cautiously if you are taking carvedilol.
    • Cetirizine and levocetirizine : If either of these drugs is combined with methyldopa , you may experience increased drowsiness.
    • Diphenhydramine : Make sure to talk with your doctor before taking any diphenhydramine products because any product containing itmay counteract the effects of some blood pressure medications.

Second-generation antihistamines that are not combined with decongestants are generally safe to use if you arenot taking the blood pressure medicines listed in the section above. The same goes for intranasal corticosteroids. Second-generation antihistamines and intranasal corticosteroids include the following:

    • Zyrtec
    • Nasonex
    • Rhinocort

Antihistamine eye drops, such as Pataday and Zaditor , are also safe options for itchy and watery eyes.

What Happens If You Overuse Flonase

    Flonase And Blood Pressure

Nasal spray addiction is not a true addiction, but it can lead to tissue damage inside the nose. This can result in swelling and long-term stuffiness that leads to further use and overuse of the spray. In some cases, a person may need to undergo additional treatment, and possibly surgery, to correct any damage.

Ask The Doctor: Can Allergies Cause High Blood Pressure

    Q. I have allergies. Could they be the reason I have high blood pressure?

    A. Although allergies don’t usually directly increase blood pressure, they can contribute indirectly to high blood pressure in two very different ways.

If your allergies cause nasal congestion at night, they could interfere with your breathing when you sleep. This can promote, or worsen, the type of gasping-for-breath snoring known as sleep apnea, which can raise blood pressure. If you often wake up at night, or if your sleeping partner has noticed that you snore and sound like you choke or gasp for air every so often, talk with your doctor about being checked for sleep apnea.

    What Are The Long

The likelihood of experiencing adverse Avamys side effects increases if you use this nasal spray regularly for long periods of time.

The below are thought to be long-term effects of taking Avamys:

    • Increase in nosebleeds
    • Slowing or suppression of growth in children
    • Blurred vision or changes to vision such as cataracts or glaucoma
    • Chest tightness causing difficulty in breathing
    • Cushings syndrome, Cushingoid features or adrenal suppression

Nasal corticosteroids like Avamys can affect the production of hormones in the body especially if you use strong doses for a long period of time. Particularly in children, this side effect may cause slower growth or suppression in normal growth.

More rarely, there may be psychological or behavioural effects such as sleep disorders, hyperactivity, anxiety, depression or aggression .

  • Breathe deeply. It will help you relax until your palpitations pass.
  • Splash your face with cold water. It stimulates a nerve that controls your heart rate.
  • Exercise. Sometimes, a vigorous workout can stop heart palpitations.
  • Dont panic. Stress and anxiety will make your palpitations worse.
  • Study Setting Design And Outcomes

How can you increase blood pressure if you have hypotension?

A single-center, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial was conducted in the ED at Mayo Clinic , an academic, tertiary care hospital. The study protocol was approved by the Mayo Clinic Institutional Review Board. The trial was registered with clinicaltrials.gov . Study reporting adheres to the CONSORT guidelines for reporting parallel-group randomized trials .

The study statistician used a computerized random number generator to create a simple randomization schedule, which was then provided to the research pharmacy. Only the study statistician and the research pharmacy had access to the randomization schedule. After a patient was enrolled in the study, a custom order sheet with the patientâs study identification number was sent to the research pharmacy. The pharmacy then matched the patient with the randomization schedule, and the patient was allocated to 1 of 4 study arms: oxymetazoline 0.05%, phenylephrine 0.25%, lidocaine 1% with epinephrine 1:100,000, or bacteriostatic 0.9% sodium chloride . After study enrollment was complete, subject numbers were matched to the randomization schedule to complete the data set.

The primary outcome was the greatest increase from baseline in mean arterial pressure after medication administration. Secondary outcomes were the greatest increase from baseline in systolic blood pressure , diastolic blood pressure , and heart rate .

Nonprescription Products To Avoid With Hypertension

    W. Steven Pray, PhD, DPhBernhardt Professor, Nonprescription Products and DevicesCollege of Pharmacy, Southwestern Oklahoma State UniversityWeatherford, Oklahoma

    US Pharm.

Researchers have charted an alarming rise in the number of persons with hypertension. For example, the number rose by 30% from 1994 to 2000.1 The CDC estimated the percentage of noninstitutionalized adults aged 20 years and above with hypertension to be 32%.2 The number of ambulatory visits that have hypertension as the primary diagnosis is estimated to be 40.5 million.2 In 2006, there were 23,855 deaths due to hypertension, or 8 per 100,000 population.2

The National Institutes of Health has provided this hypertension advice for the lay public: Most of the time, high blood pressure can be controlled with medicine and lifestyle changes.3 Of course, this optimistic statement assumes that patients do not unknowingly take any action that would raise their blood pressure. For instance, some nonprescription medications may cause dangerous rises in blood pressure, and the labels reflect that danger by recommending that patients speak to a physician before using them. However, some patients ignore the labels completely. Others may choose to ask the pharmacist about the warning. For this reason, it is important for pharmacists to be aware of which products carry the warning and which alternative products may be recommended.

Can I Take Flonase And Claritin Together

Question: If someone is using a nasal steroid spray, such as Nasonex or Flonase, is it okay or even desirable to also use an oral antihistamine such as Zyrtec or Claritin? Answer: Yes, both antihistamines and nasal steroids can be used, depending on the clinical symptoms and the response to treatment.

More Meds That Can Raise Blood Pressure

Besides pseudoephedrine, cold and allergy sufferers with hypertension should be wary of:

    • Afrin nasal spray
    • Multi-symptom cold products with NSAIDs

If you take prescription medications that increase your blood pressure, such as Adderall or albuterol inhalers, the oxymetazoline in Afrin can also increase your blood pressure through a combined effect.

NSAIDs cause the body to retain fluid and may affect kidney function, which may increase blood pressure.

Fortunately, if you have high blood pressure, there are safer alternatives when cold and allergy season come around.

Are There Any Other Precautions Or Warnings For This Medication

    flonase vs xlear

Before you begin using a medication, be sure to inform your doctor of any medical conditions or allergies you may have, any medications you are taking, whether you are pregnant or breast-feeding, and any other significant facts about your health. These factors may affect how you should use this medication.

Additional medication: Although fluticasone propionate will control seasonal allergic rhinitis in most cases, an abnormally heavy amount of summer pollen may sometimes require additional treatment, particularly to control eye symptoms. Speak to your doctor if you have been using this medication for 3 weeks and are still experiencing allergic rhinitis symptoms.

Growth in children and adolescents: Corticosteroids such as fluticasone propionate nasal spray may impair the growth of children and adolescents. Your doctor will monitor for this. Talk to your doctor if you have any concerns.

Infections: Corticosteroids such as fluticasone propionate nasal spray may worsen existing infections, mask the signs of infection, and cause new infections. If you use this medication for several months or longer, your doctor will monitor you periodically for signs of infection. People who have not had chickenpox or measles or have not been vaccinated against these infections should take special care to avoid exposure to them.
