How Does Alcohol Affect My Blood Pressure
Though scientists are still learning exactly how it happens, we do know that alcohol can raise your blood pressure directly and indirectly.
The direct effects of alcohol on blood pressure are related to the way alcohol is processed through your body. Having more than 3 drinks at once can temporarily raise your blood pressure, but once the alcohol is processed out of your body, blood pressure usually returns to normal. Similarly, binge drinkinghaving 5 or more drinks in 2 hours for men and 4 or more drinks in 2 hours for womencan cause a temporary spike in blood pressure. Heavy drinkersbinge drinking at least 5 days in one monthare more likely to experience the direct and indirect effects of alcohol on blood pressure compared to moderate drinkers. To improve blood pressure, its worthwhile for heavy drinkers to gradually reduce their intake by 1 to 2 servings of alcohol per day until they are drinking no more than 1 to 2 servings total per day. This would be considered moderate drinking.

Red Wine And Alcohol In Men At Risk Of Heart Disease
Another study tested the blood pressure effects of red wine against de-alcoholized red wine and gin, in 67 older men who were at high cardiovascular risk due to having diabetes, or at least 3 heart disease risk factors such as hypertension, high cholesterol, smoking or obesity.
During 3 separate treatment periods of 4 weeks, each volunteer drank either red wine every day, or the equivalent amount of de-alcoholized red wine, or gin .
On the day after each treatment period, their blood pressure was measured 3 times, at 5-minute intervals after sitting for 15 minutes at rest.
In this study, involving men at high risk of heart attack or stroke, the month of drinking de-alcoholized red wine lowered blood pressure by 5.8/2.3 mmHg, significantly more than the red wine or the gin .
In a few people, blood pressure readings went up, but the overall change was a reduction in blood pressure readings with the alcohol-free wine.
Blood tests showed these changes were associated with increases in a powerful blood vessel dilating substance called nitric oxide.
The researchers concluded that the daily consumption of de-alcoholized red wine could be useful for the prevention of low to moderate hypertension in men at risk of cardiovascular disease.

How Does Red Wine Lower Blood Pressure
Its all down to flavonoids compounds found mainly in fruits and vegetables, as well as dark chocolate and red wine, that are high in antioxidants. Antioxidants help protect the bodys cells against free-radical damage, also known as oxidative stress.
The study focused on how microbes in the gut break down flavonoids, which then work to lower blood pressure. For the first time, scientists looked at six different subclasses of flavonoids and the link between their intake, microbial diversity, and blood pressure. Data suggested that up to 15.2% of the association between flavonoid-rich foods and systolic blood pressure could be explained by the gut microbiome.
Previous research has shown flavonoids can improve heart health, but researchers said this was the first time they had been able to explain their connection to lower blood pressure.
Lead investigator Professor Aedin Cassidy said: Our gut microbiome plays a key role in metabolising flavonoids to enhance their cardioprotective effects, and this study provides evidence to suggest these blood-pressure-lowering effects are achievable with simple changes to the daily diet.
Wondering how much red wine will lower blood pressure? Not surprisingly, moderation is key. Researchers found that about three glasses of red wine a week was optimal. For berries, the suggested amount was 80g a day.

According to Medical News Today, alcohol also impacts a person’s blood pressure through their cortisol levels, which is a stress-regulating hormone.
“It can also interfere with some blood pressure medications for those that have a current hypertension diagnosis and are medicated,” says Best. “This interaction can either reduce the amount of medication the body receives or cause negative side effects.”
It’s also helpful to think about how drinking too much wine can impact your weight, which can impact your blood pressure. “Wine contains empty calories, which can lead to weight gain and increased blood pressure as a result,” says Best, “so this is something to keep in mind for those dealing with high blood pressure.”

The US talks in terms of standard drinks and the UK in terms of units of alcohol but they are roughly comparable:
One unit or drink =12 ounces or 1/2 a pint of beer/lager/cider,5 ounces or 1 medium glass of wine,1.5 ounces or 1 shot of spirits/liquor
The US government recommends no more than 1-2 drinks/units a day for men, 1 a day for women while the UKs NHS recommends a more generous limit of 2 units a day for men and women .
Some people are more sensitive to the effects of alcohol than others, so you need to judge for yourself whats a healthy amount to be drinking.
But too much alcohol is worse for your blood pressure than too little, so best to stay on the lower side.
For a general guideline, one drink a day is a good and safe amount, a couple of drinks on special occasions.Or, of course, more if you mix it.
