The Verywell Health team tested 10 blood pressure monitors at The Verywell Testing Lab to see how they performed amongst a few key attributes, including setup, fit, accuracy, ease of use, data display, portability, and value. What Factors Cause Blood Pressure Readings To Vary

Several different factors can be attributed to variations in blood pressure measurement. The most notable factors include the time of day a measurement is taken, amount of physical activity before the test, levels of stress in the subject, body position while test is in progress and even which arm the measurement is taken on. The user must avoid drinking alcohol, drinking caffeinated beverages, smoking, and exercise at least 30 minutes before the test is performed. It is important to note that the readouts given by a digital monitor may vary from those given by a healthcare provider. These differences arise from comparative levels in anxiety, noise, bodily movement and also the methods by which blood pressure readings are recorded. A Note About Accuracy

Because blood pressure can fluctuate greatly in response to movement, medication, and other factors, we decided we did not have the resources to give a valid accuracy rating. Instead, we determined each devices reading consistency.

We calculated the standard deviation of the back-to-back systolic and diastolic readings on each device. We did this for both the morning and afternoon tests we’ve included the average standard deviations for each device listed above. Dr. Sheikh advised that devices with standard deviation readings of 10 or less would be considered consistent. Devices with standard deviations greater than 10 did not make our list.

Throughout both tests, the testers took thorough notes on how the cuff fit around their arm, how easy the results were to access and understand, whether or not the device was easily portable, any other features that would either lessen or enhance the devices value. They then scored the product for these attributes on a scale of one to five .

What To Do If Your Reading Is Inaccurate

Sometimes youll get a BP measurement that just doesnt make sense. This is fairly common, especially when youre new to home blood pressure monitoring.

If you didnt get an accurate reading, dont immediately re-inflate the blood pressure cuff. Remove the cuff and give yourself at least one minute before reapplying the cuff and repeating the steps to measure your blood pressure.

The American Heart Association recommends taking your new home blood pressure monitor with you to your next doctors appointment.4 You can ask questions, and your doctor can make sure youre using the monitor correctly.

You can also verify that your home monitor gets the same results as the equipment in your doctors office. Its good practice to bring in your home monitor at least once a year to make sure readings are still accurate.

Take an accurate in-home blood pressure reading using digital blood pressure monitors by following the steps below:

Get ready. Make sure youre comfortable and relaxed. Your bladder should be empty, as a full one can impact the reading. Avoid smoking, exercise, and caffeine before taking your blood pressure.

Sit down. A comfortable sitting position is also the best position for taking a blood pressure reading. Remove any clothing that is tight or bulky around the upper arm, or roll up your sleeve. Place both feet on the floor and rest your forearm comfortably on a table at heart level. Place your arm with the palm of your hand facing up.

Find your pulse. Locate the brachial artery by finding your pulse in the center of your elbow. Press your index and middle fingers lightly against the inside of your elbow. If you cant find it by feeling, use the upper arm cuff to locate your pulse.

Use the right size of cuff. For an accurate reading, you need a blood pressure arm cuff that fits correctly. The length of the cuff should equal at least 80% of the circumference of your upper arm.

Apply the blood pressure cuff. Wrap the cuff around your upper arm . The lower edge of the cuff should be about one inch above the pit of your elbow. The arm cuff should feel snug, but not tight. If your blood pressure cuff has an arrow on it, make sure it points to the bend of your arm.
