Can Apple Watch Do Blood Pressure

New Apple Leak Reveals Iphone 13 Price Shock

How do I check my blood pressure on my Apple Watch?

In Samsungs version, a traditional blood pressure cuff has to be used to record a baseline reading. The watch then monitors for changes, and needs to be re-calibrated with a cuff regularly ;ideally every four weeks.

This means it is not a particularly useful feature for the average user, and is likely to sit unused in most cases.

Apple filed a patent outlining a way to measure blood pressure from the wrist, cuff-free, in 2018, and another in May 2020. The more recent filing describes a series of sensors housed in the strap as well as the main body of the watch.

Pressure is applied to the underside of the wrist as part of the method, so a more built-up Apple Watch strap would be required.

Measuring blood pressure is not nearly as simply as measuring heart rate. This is further proved by the Omron HeartGuide. It was among the first smartwatch-style wearables widely approved for blood pressure readings, with validations from the FDA, British Hypertension Society and European Society for Hypertension.

It uses an inflatable micro-cuff that mimics the approach of a blood pressure cuff, on a smaller scale. But it is still much bulkier than any Apple Watch.

This does not necessarily mean the Apple Watch Series 6 will never have blood pressure readings, though. If a custom strap is required, Apple could release it further down the line. And if it is to use a solution based on the standard PPG heart rate hardware, like the Galaxy Watch 3, this could be added in a software update.

How To Use The Blood Oxygen App On Apple Watch Series 6

Calibrate Samsung Galaxy Watch

Now that you have everything on the watch that you need. Let’s get into how to actually take a reading. The first thing you’re going to need to do is calibrate it with a blood pressure monitor. Ideally, Samsung suggests using one that sits on your upper arm to get the most reliable results.

Step 1: Open the Samsung Health Monitor app on your phone and tap the blood pressure tab.

Step 2: You’ll be prompted to calibrate the watch with a cuff-based blood pressure monitor. In this example, we’ve used a Kinetik advanced blood pressure monitor.

Step 3: Next, get the blood pressure monitor cuff in place on your arm. Make sure you’re sitting down, relaxed and you have your arm positioned level with your heart

Step 4: Place your Samsung smartwatch on the wrist opposite to the one you’re wearing the blood pressure monitor cuff.

Step 5: When prompted on the app, start the blood pressure monitor and then the watch will start doing its own measuring seconds later. It takes around 30 seconds to take a reading.

Step 6: When reading is completed, you’ll be asked to manually add in the data from the blood pressure monitor into the Samsung Health Monitor app. It will be two numbers you’ll need to input.

Step 7: You’ll need to repeat this process three times in total before you can take the cuff off.

Are Smartwatches Ready For Blood Pressure Monitoring

The feature of a smartwatch is its ability to be an extension of a smartphone, without the need to open one’s device for alerts or updates that can be seen through their wearable technology. Blood pressure is one of the morbid illnesses that need addressing, something which a lot of people have contracted over the years.;

According to;The Verge, smartwatches are still not yet on the page of debuting blood pressure monitoring tech anytime soon, but it would aim to do so in the future. Currently, research is being done by smartwatch companies like;Fitbit, which aims to introduce the feature for its lineup in the future.;

The question is a massive one, especially as people see the massive improvement of smartwatches throughout the years, becoming people’s choice for accessories and a healthy wearable in one. In recent times, it has saved lives as it detected a woman that had a;“widowmaker” heart attack, who luckily has the wearable.;

Blood Pressure and Hypertension are two related things, and it has a lot to do with the health of a person, as they are a “life and death” threat to a person’s day-to-day. Blood pumping through the veins and hitting the artery walls is what is called the “blood pressure” and if this goes up a certain degree or level, it becomes hypertension.

How To Take Blood Pressure On Samsung Galaxy Smartwatches

How to Monitor Blood Pressure with Apple Watch

If you own a Samsung smartwatch, then you can now take blood pressure measurements from the wrist.

Users with a Galaxy Watch 3 or an Active 2 can now access the feature. It wasn’t available at launch, but with approval in the US and Europe and a rollout onto the Active 2 via a big update both devices can now take blood pressure readings and ECG.

The first step is calibration with a dedicated blood pressure cuff so you can’t just slap the smartwatch on your wrist and go.

Once that’s done you can then take readings that will give you an insight into your current cardiovascular health.

While it will no doubt appeal to hypertension sufferers, Samsung states that this cannot diagnose hypertension or other conditions like heart attacks, so that’s something to keep in mind here.

When Is This Coming To Apple Watch

These patents were filed in 2017, so Apple has now been sitting on this technology for a few years now. Could we see Apple Watch measuring blood pressure inside the next year or two? Its possible. But Apple will want to make sure the apparatus that makes this possible works 100% correctly and that could prove tricky. Itll also need to do thousands of hours of real-world tests to make sure the data it records is accurate.

On top of this, Apple will have to find a way to convince people to ditch their traditional, medically backed blood pressure measurement units in favor of a new strap for their Apple Watch. Finally, Apple will need to assess whether there is even demand for such a thing. I mean, most people might be fine with their current blood pressure measurement setup and not want to pay $100-$200 for an Apple Watch accessory that might not be as accurate.

Either way, the patents show Apples long-standing commitment to making Apple Watch the #1 wearable for tracking health metrics. Just recently, Apple added the ability to more accurately track heart rate fluctuations by improving Apple Watchs EEG technology. Adding in the ability to monitor blood pressure seems like the next obvious step for Apple Watchs health capabilities

How Blood Pressure And Heart Monitor Smartwatch Sensors Work

Can the Apple watch measure blood pressure?

Smartwatches have been increasing in their ability to monitor various aspects of our health, including blood pressure, for many years. When it comes to the heart, the technology contained within the devices we wear on our wrists is powerful in terms of recording and analyzing how healthy we are.

Many of the big-name brands of smartwatch have included heart monitoring as a core function for some time now. There was some distrust in the accuracy of the monitoring at first. However, brands such as Apple, Garmin, and Fitbit have proven that their watches can detect heart rates, blood oxygen levels, and conduct ECGs to an accurate standard.

Can An Apple Watch Measure Blood Pressure

As of right now, It is not possible to measure your blood pressure on any of the Apple Watch models that are out there without the help of a connected blood pressure monitor.

An example of a blood pressure monitor that can connect with your smartphone through Bluetooth and then be used on your Apple Watch, with the use of an app is the QardioArm.

Taking Charge Of Your Health

Valencell is currently preparing to submit its work for FDA approval so it can be marketed as a blood pressure monitor in the US. But why is measuring blood pressure regularly so important?

A lot of people dont have to worry about it, because a lot of people just will never get hypertension, Dr LeBoeuf says, but for most people, especially in America, its simple you will get it, and its known as the silent killer. It causes all kind of trouble. It starts to weaken your blood vessels, those weakened blood vessels inflame, they attract cholesterol, and then its just catastrophe from there.

The wrist inflation cuffs look weird enough as it is, much less the ones that actually work with the armbands

Dr Steven LeBoeuf, Valencell

Dr LeBoeuf says this doesnt just increase mortality its also extremely expensive to healthcare systems around the world. As a result, the American Heart Association is encouraging people to measure their blood pressure more frequently so they can see if they are developing hypertension, and take action accordingly whether its making lifestyle changes, or taking medication to prevent the blood vessels weakening, the inflammation, and the chain reaction that follows.

The problem is, measuring your blood pressure is a complete pain in the ass, he says. First of all, who’s going to carry that thing around with them? The wrist inflation cuffs look weird enough as it is, much less the ones that actually work with the armbands.”
