Objective: Studies report that acute consumption of energy drinks transiently increases blood pressure . However, few studies report the effect of chronic energy drink consumption on BP. In this study, we investigated the effects of long-term energy drink ingestion on BP in C57BL/6J normotensive wild-type mice.

Research Methods and Procedures: Groups of mice were randomized to no treatment , or to Mother provided as a decarbonated 30% drinking solution , sugar-free Mother at 30% , Coca Cola at 30% for a total intervention period of 13 weeks.

Collectively, the data suggest that the long-term chronic consumption of energy drinks may significantly lower the BP in normotensive mice through the actions of caffeine, taurine, and/or B-vitamins. The study findings do not support consideration of energy drinks for BP management, but rather demonstrate no long-term amplification of BP in normotensive preclinical models.

Do Energy Drinks Cause High Blood Pressure

Energy drinks may contribute to high blood pressure because of the caffeine and sugar content.

However, energy drinks certainly arent the only caffeinated products in the world, and there are many other things that cause high blood pressure.

The Potential Negative Side Effects Caffeinated Drinks Have On Your Blood Pressure

The fluid you consume plays a major role in your blood volume, helping to provide the liquid component to your blood so nutrients and oxygen can be delivered appropriately across your body. However, the impact of the liquids you consume goes beyond blood volume.

Caffeinated beverages, like coffee, soda, and energy drinks can cause your body to release adrenaline, leading to an increase in your blood pressure. According to the Food and Drug Administration , up to 400 milligrams of caffeine, which is about 4 to 5 cups of coffee, is not associated with negative health outcomes in most people however, everyone has a different sensitivity level to caffeine. This means while you may not feel any different after 4 cups of coffee, your friend may feel anxious and notice a rapid heartbeat related to increased blood pressure.

The US military has even warned against troops consuming too many energy drinks since doing so has been associated with sleep disruption, leading to periods of fatigue during briefings or on guard duty.

If your energy drink of choice also contains a lot of sugar, there is a chance that it might lead to increased blood pressure over the long term, perhaps as a result of weight gain.

May Lead To Caffeine Overdose And Possible Toxicity

While safe doses of caffeine vary by individual, current research recommends limiting caffeine to 400 mg per day or less in healthy adults .

As one small 8.4-ounce can of Red Bull provides 75 mg of caffeine, drinking more than 5 cans per day could increase your risk of caffeine overdose .

However, the average half-life of caffeine in the blood ranges from 1.59.5 hours, which means it could take up to 9.5 hours for your caffeine blood levels to drop to half of its original amount .

As a result, its hard to determine the exact amount of Red Bull that could lead to caffeine overdose.

Additionally, adolescents under the age of 19 may be at a greater risk of caffeine-related side effects .

Current recommendations call for limiting caffeine to 100 mg or less per day in adolescents aged 1219. Therefore, drinking more than one 8.4-ounce serving of Red Bull could increase the risk of caffeine overdose in this age group .

Symptoms of caffeine overdose and toxicity can include nausea, vomiting, hallucinations, anxiety, rapid heart rate, dizziness, trouble sleeping, and seizures .

Summary

Occasional, moderate intake of Red Bull is unlikely to have any serious side effects. Still, when consumed frequently and in excess, it may have several negative and potentially life-threatening effects.

This would mean drinking approximately forty 8.4-ounce cans of Red Bull in one day.

Blood Pressure Archives

Energy drinks can raise your blood pressure, a new small study found.

The new research, published in the journal JAMA, found that drinking one 16-ounce energy drink raised blood pressure and a stress hormone among young adults.

In the study, the researchers had 25 healthy men and women drink a 16-ounce Rockstar energy drink on one day, and a placebo drink on another day. The researchers then measured the men and womens blood pressure and their levels of the stress hormone norepinephrine before the trial and 30 minutes after they drank the beverage. They found that blood pressure levels went up and norepinephrine levels rose twice as much after people drank the energy drink compared to when they drank the placebo beverage.

Specifically, they found that mean blood pressure increased 6.4% after drinking the energy drink compared to the 1.0% increase seen with the placebo. Norepinephrine levels increased 73.6% after drinking the energy drink compared to 30.9% after drinking the placebo beverage.

The study size is very small with only 25 people, so more research is needed to look at the connection. However, the research is not the first to link energy drinks to heart-related issues.

The Dangers Of Energy Drinks

In the US alone, over 13,000 people a year need emergency treatment as a result of energy drinks, including teenagers who present with symptoms such as palpitations, high blood pressure and even collapse. In 2015, 34 deaths in the US were related to energy drink consumption. Its therefore not surprising that some countries, such as Denmark and France, have banned the sale of some energy drink brands , while in Norway, some energy drinks are only available in pharmacies.

The caffeine content of energy drinks and shots ranges from 50 to 505 mg caffeine per serving, compared with 34mg to 54mg caffeine per serving for colas, and 77mg to 150mg for a 6 ounce cup of coffee.

The FDA allowable limit for caffeine in cola-type drinks is 0.02% but this limit does not extend to energy drinks and some contain significantly higher levels.

In Australia and New Zealand, the caffeine content of energy drinks is limited to 320 mg/L and for soft-drinks is limited to 145 mg/L .

The European Food Safety Authority recommend that healthy adults should have no more than 200mg caffeine in a single dose. Most countries suggest that, for the average healthy, non-pregnant adult, a moderate daily caffeine intake of up to 400mg per day is not expected to cause any adverse effects.

NB The FDA declared in 2010 that caffeine is an unsafe additive in alcoholic beverages and several premixed alcoholic energy drinks were prohibited from sale in the United States.

Energy Drinks Raise Blood Pressure Study Finds

18 March 2015

Energy drinks might give you some pep but they might also be priming you for heart problems, a new study finds.

Researchers found that energy drinks can raise blood pressure to potentially unhealthy levels. The effect was far more prominent in young adults who did not consume caffeine regularly, according to the study, presented March 14 at an American College of Cardiology meeting in San Diego.

In this study, the research team led by Dr. Anna Svatikova, a cardiovascular-diseases fellow at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota gave a can of a commercially available energy drink to 25 healthy volunteers, whose ages ranged from 19 to 40. On a different day, the participants drank the same amount of a placebo drink. The researchers measured the participantsâ heart rate and blood pressure before and after the drinks.

The participants experienced a more marked rise in blood pressure after consuming the energy drink than after drinking the placebo, according to the findings. The participantsâ average systolic blood pressure increased by 3 percent more after they drank an energy drink, compared with after they drank the placebo drink.

Even a small increase in blood pressure can have deadly consequences, depending on your age and resting blood pressure, said Sachin Shah, an associate professor of pharmacy at the University of the Pacific in Stockton, California, who was not involved in the study.
