Best Blood Pressure Apps For Iphone
For most of us, having to wait six months to a year to get a blood pressure reading at the physicians office is far too long. That is where home blood pressure monitoring comes into play its an increasingly vital practice in which patients take their own blood pressure readings, either to help in managing high blood pressure after its diagnosed or to detect whether the chronic condition is present.
HBPM is an all-important segment of the larger at-home heart health industry that has burgeoned in the past few years, partly thanks to the availability of easy-to-use, fairly inexpensive digital blood pressure devices. The accuracy of these BP monitors has also improved dramatically, making BP at-home monitors reliable and a great tool for your healthcare.
The best news is that most of these devices come with companion apps that help you store, analyze, and keep track of your BP stats via your smartphone. An effective home blood pressure app for iPhone could be a lifesaver, although we recommend that you take it on your next doctors visit to ascertain its accuracy. Why does that matter?
That isnt even the scariest part. Left untreated, hypertension can increase your risk for kidney disease, vision loss, stroke, cardiovascular disease, sexual health problems, type-2 diabetes and much more. The only way of diagnosing the condition is by getting accurate and consistent blood pressure readings.

According to the World Health Organization, over a billion people worldwide suffer from high blood pressure . Also known as a “silent killer” as most people are unaware of their condition, Hypertension, if left untreated, can increase the risk of heart disease and stroke that could result in death. For this reason, it is essential to measure blood pressure regularly.
Smartphone App Misreads Hypertension Range
A blood pressure app downloaded by tens of thousands of people before sales halted last year gave many patients with hypertension the false impression that their vital signs were normal when in reality they were dangerously high, a U.S. study suggests.
The app in question, Instant Blood Pressure from AuraLife, was designed to estimate blood pressure by placing the top edge of a smartphone on the left side of the chest and holding the right index finger over the camera on the device.
But approximately four out of every five people with hypertension got inaccurate readings from the app that suggested their blood pressure was in a normal range when it was actually high, the study found.
“If Instant Blood Pressure worked, it would be a revolutionary new technology that would allow for low-cost screening and management of hypertension among smartphone users,” said lead study author Dr. Timothy Plante of Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore.
“That it doesn’t use a cuff is neat as folks don’t generally like carrying around a bulky blood pressure monitor,” Plante added by email. “Inaccurate measurements for high or low readings are concerning, however. Hypertension is known as the silent killer as it has an asymptomatic course that leads to serious conditions like heart disease, kidney disease, and stroke.”

How Accurate Are Blood Pressure Apps
According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, one in three Americans has high blood pressure. Many of these Americans are trying to test their blood pressure on their smartphone to potentially stop using traditional armband testing methods.
A new study published in the Journal of the American Society of Hypertension reveals both some pros and cons to many widely-used blood pressure and health apps.
The first takeaway is its important to note that none of the blood pressure or healthcare apps out there are regulated by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration . The FDA is responsible for regulating medical devices and no blood pressure apps have been approved as of 2019.
While their accuracy is currently unknown, its more the users testing ability that can also be called into question. If used properly, mobile health devices may, in fact, be able to properly measure blood pressure, and perform other health tests.
One current dilemma in this field is that if there are too many regulations put in place, the perfection and creation of current mobile health devices be may be stifled.
While their accuracy for testing blood pressure may not be 100%, there are a lot of other great benefits to using a mobile device for health tracking purposes.

Devices Without A Pressure Sensor That Estimate Change Of Blood Pressure
Apps that use only a camera in the phone
These claim to estimate BP by reading the pulse of a finger held against the phone camera lens or screen while the flashlight is shining on it and 10 15 seconds later you get a reading. The camera is used to detect the absorption of light by the arteries. As the arteries expand, more red light is absorbed. The signal that they derive is therefore related to the immediate area of the arteries and as the pressure rises, the arteries expand with the complex behaviour that arises from the many reflected waves.
It is then possible to use a technique called Pulse Wave Analysis to detect features of the shape of the waveform that can be related to blood pressure. This is usually done by machine learning or Artificial Intelligence, where signals are recorded from many different people at the same time as recording their blood pressure. The AI finds ways to relate the waveform to the measured blood pressure.
This difficult analysis is made even harder because the waveform depends on how hard the finger is pressed against the camera. Pressing raises the pressure in the tissue of the finger, so the area of the arteries is changed. The change is not constant it depends on the instantaneous pressure so the waveform changes.
Wearables that use a purely optical sensor for measuring blood pressure
Again, it is necessary to calibrate and recalibrate frequently and some of the leading devices are sold with an automatic cuff.
Blood Pressure Apps May Be Dangerously Wrong
Millions of people could be trying to measure their blood pressure with untested, inaccurate and potentially dangerous smartphone applications
NEW YORK – Millions of people could be trying to measure their blood pressure with untested, inaccurate and potentially dangerous smartphone applications, or apps, a new study finds.
Researchers analyzed the top 107 apps for hypertension and high blood pressure that are available for download on the Google Play store and Apple iTunes and found that nearly three-quarters offered useful tools for tracking medical data.
But they also found seven Android apps that claimed users needed only to press their fingers onto phone screens or cameras to get blood-pressure readings claims that scientists say are bogus.
This technology is really in its nascent stages, and its not quite ready for prime time, lead author Dr. Nilay Kumar told Reuters Health.
Kumar, an attending physician at the Cambridge Health Alliance in Cambridge, Massachusetts and a Harvard Medical School instructor, was surprised to learn that apps marketed as turning smartphones into blood pressure measuring devices had been downloaded at least 900,000 times and as many as 2.4 million times.
Thats concerning that such a small number of apps have been downloaded so many times, he said. We were surprised by the popularity.
He wasnt sure how the technology supposedly works but said the phone camera appears to read a finger pulse.

How Do I Import Multiple Records
Send a CSV file from the SmartBP app History screen to your e-mail address. Open this CSV file in Excel and add your data to this file .
Make sure you format the date/time in m/d/yy h:mm
Now drag this file to the files folder on your phone and select the import option from the history page in SmartBP .
Another option requires an upgrade but it is much easier and faster to import your records. Add at least one record and then go to History screen, select your data and tap on the cloud option. Here choose export to Google Drive / Dropbox. A folder will be created and a CSV file will be uploaded. Now modify this exported file and populate it with all your data and save it as a separate CSV file in the same folder. Then go back to SmartBP and import the newly created CSV file.
