Best Blood Pressure Monitor (Doctor’s Review)

This company are not to be trusted. I purchased a blood pressure monitor from them at a price significantly higher than elsewhere. What persuaded me was the promise on their website of a “no quibble” money back easy return. When the item arrived the instructions proved impossible to understand. they appeared to be a direct translation from a non English language and made no sense.I immediatly requested a return and refund which has now been actioned, however the promised re-imbursement of postage has still not been forthcoming.

How The Cuff Should Fit

Proper cuff fit is vital to getting accurate measurements a cuff that is too loose or tight on your arm will lead to an inaccurate reading. To measure your arm for a cuff, youll want to measure the circumference of your mid-upper arm, about halfway between your elbow and shoulder. According to Target:BP, the cuffs lengthwhich wraps around the armshould be roughly 80% of your mid-upper arm measurement. For example, if your arm circumference is 40 cm, your cuff measurement is 32 cm. Cuffs often come in size ranges.

How We Chose These Blood Pressure Monitors

When deciding which blood pressure monitors to include, we considered factors like:

  • Location. Blood pressure monitors that assess blood pressure on the upper arm tend to be considered the most accurate, so we focused our suggestions mostly on upper arm monitors.
  • Size and fit. Choose a monitor that properly fits your upper arm, which helps to ensure accuracy. If you are smaller or larger than the average size, make sure the monitor is suitable for your measurements. Size is also a consideration if you plan to use the device on the go. If so, choose a lightweight, compact design that comes with a quality carrying case.
  • Special features. Decide if you want a monitor that works on its own and stores readings internally. Some devices transfer data to your personal device and connect to an app that offers in-depth readings. Consider the display screen, options for multiple users, and extra capabilities such as irregular heartbeat detection.
  • Accuracy. We know that accuracy matters when it comes to your health information, so we tried to include only monitors with a reputation for great accuracy.
  • Price. Blood pressure monitors are available in a range of prices, so we did our best to showcase options for various budgets.
  • Customer reviews. There are some things only someone who has bought and used a blood pressure monitor can know about it. Thats why weve given a lot of weight to what real users have to say about their experiences.

First Things First: What Is A Blood Pressure Monitor

It may seem simple, though its important to understand the working science of these healthcare essentials.

A blood pressure monitor consists of an inflatable cuff that is usually wrapped around the arm and a monitoring device that measures the cuffs pressure,Lama Ghazi, MD, Ph.D., a postdoctoral fellow at Yale School of Medicine who specializes in inpatient hypertension, told the New York Post. The monitor provides two pressures: systolic pressure is the pressure the blood exerts on your artery walls when your heart beats and diastolic pressure is the pressure your blood is exerting on your artery walls when your heart is resting between beats .

Systolic More Than 130

With a systolic reading of more than 130 mm Hg or a diastolic reading of more than 80 mm Hg, youre experiencing hypertension, and your doctor will determine a treatment plan.

Always contact your doctor if youre worried about blood pressure results. For more information about high blood pressure, check out this article.

Systolic more than 180 or diastolic more than 120?

If the systolic number of your blood pressure reading is more than 180 mm Hg or the diastolic number is more than 120 mm Hg, seek immediate medical attention, particularly if you have symptoms like headache, arm pain, or blurred vision.

To check how accurate your monitor is, you can take it to your doctors office and see how it compares with their results.

S To Use A Digital Blood Pressure Monitor

SmartHeart Digital Arm Cuff Blood Pressure Monitor

Take an accurate in-home blood pressure reading using digital blood pressure monitors by following the steps below:

  • Get ready. Make sure youre comfortable and relaxed. Your bladder should be empty, as a full one can impact the reading. Avoid smoking, exercise, and caffeine before taking your blood pressure.
  • Sit down. A comfortable sitting position is also the best position for taking a blood pressure reading. Remove any clothing that is tight or bulky around the upper arm, or roll up your sleeve. Place both feet on the floor and rest your forearm comfortably on a table at heart level. Place your arm with the palm of your hand facing up.
  • Find your pulse. Locate the brachial artery by finding your pulse in the center of your elbow. Press your index and middle fingers lightly against the inside of your elbow. If you cant find it by feeling, use the upper arm cuff to locate your pulse.
  • Use the right size of cuff. For an accurate reading, you need a blood pressure arm cuff that fits correctly. The length of the cuff should equal at least 80% of the circumference of your upper arm.
  • Apply the blood pressure cuff. Wrap the cuff around your upper arm . The lower edge of the cuff should be about one inch above the pit of your elbow. The arm cuff should feel snug, but not tight.
  • Inflate the cuff. Press the start button if your digital monitor has automatic cuff inflation.
  • Systolic blood pressure should be on the left or the top of the screen.

Blood Pressure Monitors That Link To Your Smartphone Or Tablet

Some blood pressure monitors can link wirelessly to your smartphone or tablet. This is great if you want to view and track your readings electronically and store data across your devices, especially if you already track other health data on your phone or tablet, such as activity levels, calories or weight, and want it all in one place.

However, this functionality is certainly not essential, and you’ll pay a premium for this technology.

What Should My Blood Pressure Be

Before you decide to keep track of your blood pressure, it’s essential to know the different numbers and what they mean. Blood pressure is presented as two numbers: systolic and diastolic. These two numbers will typically indicate whether or not your blood pressure is at a healthy level. Generally, numbers equal or less than 120 systolic and 80 diastolic are considered normal. As these numbers increase, your risk for problems like heart attack or stroke is increased. Additionally, blood pressures lower than 90/60 warrant seeing your physician or health care provider.

What To Look For In A Blood Pressure Monitor

According to Ghazi, its important to use a validated device that has been shown to provide accurate readings. Two resources include ValidateBP and StrideBP.

I recommend selecting home under device type for the ValidateBP site and selecting adults, home, upper arm and automatic oscillometric when searching the StrideBP site, she advises. Other considerations: checking that you have the appropriate cuff size and that the cuff is not snug.

Always take your blood pressure monitor with you when you visit your primary care physician to calibrate the device, in other words, to establish a baseline between readings on your device and office blood pressure readings for future reference, Ghazi tips off.

Best Data Display: Omron Platinum Blood Pressure Monitor

    • Stores 200 data sets per user

    • Carrying case included

    • Machine sensitivity makes it prone to error messages

    • Slight learning curve to understanding the device

Omrons Platinum Wireless Blood Pressure Monitor has a display that stood out during our testing. We rated this device a five out of five for data display because the letters were large and easy to read, and the devices backlit screen makes the data stand out in both light and dark settings. The screen shows your two most recent blood pressure readings, so you can compare data quickly. Additionally, the device is easy to connect to its paired app, which stores 200 readings per user .

Our testers said this device was incredibly easy to set upplug the cuff into the device and youre ready to take your reading. Our testers noted that the Omron Platinum is incredibly sensitive to movement, so movement during a reading will trigger an error message. It took a few trials to figure this out the machine did not explicitly say that the added movement caused the error message to appear. Because of this, we scored this machine a four out of five for ease of use, bringing its overall value rating down slightly to 4.5 out of five.
