How Does A Blood Pressure Monitor Work

how to set and use digital blood pressure machine

Blood pressure is measured using a sphygmomanometer, or blood pressure monitor. It consists of an inflatable cuff thats wrapped around your arm, roughly level with your heart, and a monitoring device that measures the cuffs pressure.

The monitor measures two pressures: systolic, and diastolic. Systolic pressure is higher, occurring when your heart beats and pushes blood through the arteries, and diastolic pressure is measured when your heart is resting and filling with blood. So, for example, your blood pressure might be 120 over 80.

Blood pressure monitors may be manual or digital, but home monitors are usually digital and the whole measurement process is automatic apart from placing the cuff around your arm.

The cuff then inflates until it fits tightly around your arm, cutting off your blood flow, and then the valve opens to deflate it. As the cuff reaches your systolic pressure, blood begins to flow around your artery. This creates a vibration thats detected by the meter, which records your systolic pressure. In a traditional analogue sphygmomanometer, the blood sounds are detected by the doctor using a stethoscope.

As the cuff continues to deflate, it reaches your diastolic pressure, and the vibration stops. The meter senses this, and records the pressure again.

Withings : Withings Bpm Connect Wi

Withings has only one product among their blood pressure monitor. It goes without saying that the visual on its appearance is beautiful. It looks compact and smaller than both Omron and MOCAArm.

However, the price is much more expensive than the previous two and the logic and features on its main functions differ from the previous two either.

Features
Original price on Amazon

There are some strong suits and eye-catching features for Withings:

  • Wifi and Bluetooth connection : The measurement will immediately syn to App via Wifi or bluetooth, which means users dont have to bring their phone or turn on their phone near to the monitor to syn the data.
  • Rechargable with USB charger: Needless to say. it brings more portability when comes to traveling.
  • Very comapact and small: Judging from some youtubers video, its even smaller than Omrons Evolv. Its almost like a larger version of wrist type monitor without the tube connected to the monitor set on the table.
  • Advanced measuring: There is the function of taking consecutive three measurements by pressing one long press.
  • However, every coin has two sides.

Withings minimize the role of the monitor device by transferring all the data immediately after measuring. Therefore, users cant see their recorded measurements on monitors only in their APP.

Putting too much weight on APP makes it very important when it comes to App design and maintenance.

    • Be still. Don’t smoke, drink caffeinated beverages or exercise within 30 minutes before measuring your blood pressure. Empty your bladder and ensure at least 5 minutes of quiet rest before measurements.
    • Sit correctly.Sit with your back straight and supported . Your feet should be flat on the floor and your legs should not be crossed. Your arm should be supported on a flat surface with the upper arm at heart level. Make sure the bottom of the cuff is placed directly above the bend of the elbow. Check your monitor’s instructions for an illustration or have your healthcare provider show you how.
    • Measure at the same time every day. Its important to take the readings at the same time each day, such as morning and evening. It is best to take the readings daily however ideally beginning 2 weeks after a change in treatment and during the week before your next appointment.
    • Take multiple readings and record the results. Each time you measure, take two or three readings one minute apart and record the results using a tracker. If your monitor has built-in memory to store your readings, take it with you to your appointments. Some monitors may also allow you to upload your readings to a secure website after you register your profile.
    • Don’t take the measurement over clothes.

The Best Blood Pressure Monitor For Home Use

The American College of Physicians/American Society of Internal Medicine this year completed a questionnaire to develop relative value units and possible future reimbursement for home monitoring review, potentially including home BP and glucose monitoring. Reimbursement for monitoring home BP therapy is long overdue and would encourage patient usage of HBPM and potentially improve compliance and hypertension control. Patients who use HBPM often feel that they help them better cope with disease and reassure them., Although there is a lack of well-designed studies regarding the improvement in compliance and control of hypertension and cost-effectiveness with the usage of HBPM, some recent studies are positive. Based on an analysis in 1992, in the US an estimated $300 million/year could be saved with the usage of HBP monitoring. This savings would be much greater in 2001.

In summary, in recommending a sphygmomanometer in every home as early as 1972, Burch observed:

It is not more possible to regulate BP medicine elegantly for a patient with hypertension, without home recording of BP than it is to regulate the dose of insulin for a patient with diabetes mellitus without checking his urine for glucose at home.

When Should I Get My Blood Pressure Tested

You can ask for a blood pressure test if you’re worried about your blood pressure at any point.

You can get your blood pressure tested at a number of places, including:

    • your local GP surgery
    • at home
    • at an NHS Health Check appointment offered to adults in England aged 40-74

It’s recommended that all adults over 40 years of age have their blood pressure tested at least every 5 years so any potential problems can be detected early.

If you’ve already been diagnosed with high or low blood pressure, or you’re at a particularly high risk of these problems, you may need to have more frequent tests to monitor your blood pressure.

How Do Blood Pressure Monitors Really Work

31 January 2020- Blood pressure monitors are common on both hospital wards and in outpatient areas. They are in use every day, yet many people still do not know the technique behind them. It is high time that we learn how these blood pressure measuring devices actually work.

It is not very difficult to measure a persons blood pressure. The classic method, which can be traced back to Italian physician Scipione Riva-Roccis auscultatory technique, requires only a stethoscope and an arm cuff hooked up to a manometer.

The arm cuff is pumped full of air, cutting off the circulation in the brachial artery, and the pressure is then released gradually. If it drops below the systolic blood pressure level, the blood flow through the artery will return. However, the blood flow will be turbulent for as long as the artery remains partially compressed. This results in a muffled, pulsating noise phenomenon known as Korotkoff sounds, which can be counted by placing a stethoscope on the brachial artery or by integrating a microphone into the measurement cuff. Systolic blood pressure readings can be taken from the manometer as soon as they occur. The Korotkoff sounds disappear as soon as compression of the artery is released completely and the blood can flow again smoothly. The cuff pressure as measured at this point corresponds to the diastolic blood pressure.

    The Job Of A Clinician

Although its novelty attracted some to use the monitor, its differing design from monitors used by HCPs or at home deterred others:I didnt know how the cuff was going to inflate or whether it was going to be painful or not.

Others were concerned that a monitor designed for public use had been oversimplified and would produce poorer results than those suitable for expert use:Our only association with blood pressure is a qualified health professional, often a doctor, doing it for you so you think if the doctor can only do that, I cant.

Some doubted their ability to achieve a reliable BP result or interpret it correctly. One interviewee described how having her BP measured by a clinician was in itself healing:Theres something quite kind of therapeutic about the healthcare professional putting on a blood pressure cuff, blowing it up, reading out the numbers, it just seems like kind of, I cant really explain it like the personal touch is really important.

What Equipment Do I Need To Measure My Blood Pressure At Home

To measure your blood pressure at home, you can use either an aneroid monitor or digital monitor. Choose the type of monitor that best meets your needs. Look at the following features when you select a monitor.

    • Size: The right cuff size is very important. The cuff size you need is based on the size of your arm. You can ask the doctor, nurse, orpharmacist to help you. Blood pressure readings can be wrong if your cuff is the wrong size.
    • Price: Cost may be a key factor. Home blood pressure units vary in price. You may want to shop around to find the best deal. Keep in mind that pricey units may not be the best or most accurate.
    • Display: The numbers on the monitor should be easy for you to read.
    • Sound: You must be able to hear your heartbeat through the stethoscope.

Tests show that finger and wrist devices do not always provide correct measurements. These devices are sensitive to placement and body temperature. They also are expensive and can cost more than $100.

    Aneroid monitor

The aneroid monitor manually checks your blood pressure. It has a gauge that you read by looking at a pointer on the dial. The cuff goes around your upper arm and you squeeze a rubber bulb to inflate it by hand.

    Digital monitor

Inflation of the cuff is either automatic or manual, depending on the model. Deflation is automatic. Digital monitors are good for hearing-impaired patients, since there is no need to listen to your heartbeat through the stethoscope.

Choose Arm Cuffs Over Wrist Cuffs

You can purchase a blood pressure monitor at any drugstore or online. No matter where you buy yours, Dr. Laffin recommends getting a monitor with an automatic cuff that wraps around your upper arm. Its called a brachial blood pressure monitor.

Dont get one where you need a stethoscope, he says. An automatic cuff is best. And if youre over age 50, avoid cuffs that go around your wrist.

Wrist cuffs are likely fine if youre under 50, he says.

Our Pick: Greater Goods Blood Pressure Monitor + Kit 0602

If you dont need or want a Bluetooth monitor, the Greater Goods Blood Pressure Monitor + Kit 0602 has the same cuff, minimal noise levels, two-user maximum, irregular heartbeat detection, and dual-power options as its Bluetooth-enabled counterpart, with a slightly different display. Like the 0604, this blood pressure monitor is usable immediately out of the box, and switching between userswhile not as easy as with the 0604requires only a couple of button pushes.

Like the 0604, the 0602 runs quietly and displays results for about a minute after delivering your reading. Unlike the 0604, the 0602 is unable to average any measurements, though it can store up to 60 entries per user, if you want to calculate your averages manually. There is no way to export your readings via email, USB, Bluetooth, or any other meansyoull need to write them down or log them digitally on your own.

While the 0602 can work on either battery power or with an AC adapter, unless there are working batteries installed, it resets the date and time every time its unplugged. When this happens, previous readings stay in the machine, but its possible to jumble dates and times if a user is rushed and simply clicks through without properly selecting the month, year, day, hour, and minute.

When set up correctly, the 0602 requires two clicks to start, even when theres only one user on the device, versus the 0604s single click.
