Can A Smartwatch Detect Heart Issues
Smartwatches can be beneficial for identifying certain heart issues.
Dr. Nick West, chief medical officer and divisional vice president at Abbotts vascular business, notes that heart rate monitoring watches may help detect abnormally fast or irregular heart rhythms, including atrial fibrillation.
According to West, There are early reports of smartwatches picking up early signs of heart attack from analyzed changes in electrical activity. However, he also states that this technology is still being developed.
Can A Smartwatch Really Take Your Blood Pressure
Yes, although there are not that many on the market that work to a very high degree of accuracy, a smartwatch can really take your blood pressure reading.
It uses oscillatory technology the same way a large medical blood pressure machine does, just shrunk down to fit on your wrist. Not only can this smartwatch monitor blood pressure but it can also be used to display all of your regular notifications in the same way a smartphone does.
This blood pressure smartwatch doesnt work by reading the pulsations within the arteries on your wrist, instead, when you want to get an accurate reading of your blood pressure, you have to hold it up to your heart for approximately 30 seconds.
Are These Really The Best Blood Pressure Watches
The best blood pressure monitor will always be an FDA-approved or cleared medical device. A smartwatch will always be an alternative. When considering all the fitness watches offer, a balance must be found between your budget and expectations.
Wearable blood pressure watches have a lot to offer. However, always consider them to quickly obtain information about your blood pressure and not as a clinical device.
In case of doubts, the data will still have to be taken with a grain of salt. Always consult your doctor, pharmacist, or other healthcare professionals if your blood pressure needs extra monitoring.

What Do Heart Rate And Blood Pressure Measure
These are vital signs that give us information about how your heart and blood vessels are working. They let us know if you might need a medical intervention or medication to prevent future disease:
-
Heart rate measures how many times per minute your heart beats.
-
Blood pressure measures how strongly your heart and blood vessels pump blood to the rest of your body.
The Future Of Blood Pressure Monitoring
Valencells technology has been validated in a clinical study to demonstrate it meets the relevant ISO standard, says LeBoeuf. The company is now getting the paperwork ready to pursue clearance from the FDA. We need the industry to adopt it and agree this is extremely valuable for public health and for medical use, he explains.
Healthcare professionals may need convincing though. A recent report by Forrester Research found physicians are sceptical about the value of wearable devices in assisting clinical decisions.
However, LeBoeuf believes the wearable health market will change rapidly over the next five to ten years with digital diagnostics becoming more popular.
Passive blood pressure monitoring would allow individuals to see how their lifestyle affects their readings, he says. It could help people make more informed choices about their diet and daily activities and ultimately help them reduce the risk of serious illness.
Theres a mortality rate difference between those who monitor their blood pressure and those who dont because you can address things before they become deleterious to the body, says LeBoeuf. We strongly believe this can be democratised through wearables which will have a substantial public health outcome.

It is a nice-looking smartwatch that comes with many health and activity tracking features. In terms of accuracy, this smartwatch gives pretty accurate health and activity metrics.
Not Exactly A Smartwatch
The HeartGuide runs its own basic software, and only shows time, steps, a log of hours slept and the most recent blood pressure measurement. It can get notifications of incoming calls and text alerts, but can’t actually read the text. Battery life lasts about two to three days, when taking blood pressure measurements about 10 times a day. Taking more, which was hard to resist for me, takes a toll on battery life. To charge, you clip it onto a dongle that snaps to the cuff’s edge.
If the HeartGuide passes for a smartwatch from a distance, a closer look will reveal its limitations. But that’s besides the point. This is for anyone who might be looking for a watch to check blood pressure, needs convenient readings and is willing to pay a lot more for this convenience. While a standard blood pressure cuff from the drug store can cost you around $30, the HeartGuide costs $500.
I took the watch to my doctor’s office. Everything checked out.

Adequate levels of both rest and exercise can contribute positively to good blood pressure, so its beneficial to monitor all of them with one device. However, it is essential to note that blood pressure watches are not medical equipment and should not replace regular check-ups with your doctor.
Can An Apple Watch Take Blood Pressure
Currently, Apple watches themselves cannot take blood pressure readings by simply wearing them on your wrist. However, the Apple Watch is compatible with a range of blood pressure monitors which can sync together and give you an accurate reading.
One example is the Qardio application which is approved by the FDA. All you need to do is slide the Qardio device onto your upper arm and begin the blood pressure measurement, and the results are then synced with the Apple watch you are wearing and recorded. It is hard to take a blood pressure reading without stopping blood flow from an inflatable device.
Apple reportedly has a patent for a smartwatch with a strap that can be inflated, constricting the blood supply temporarily and allowing for an accurate blood pressure measurement to be taken. Its something we may see in the near future.

How Does Bp Doctor Work
The design of BP Doctor involved more than 30 new patents relating to its miniaturised pumps, valves and chips, some of which are no larger than a grain of rice. By miniaturizing the components for traditional oscillometric measurement, BP Doctor is capable of using an inflatable cuff within the watch band to take an accurate blood pressure reading just like a regular upper-arm oscillometric machine found in a doctor’s surgery.
Memory steel ring soft silicone pressurized airbag More comfortable to wear
Removable airbag strap design Fully sense blood vessel signalsSmart timing measurement
Underneath the strap is a cuff that inflates to measure systolic and diastolic pressure via the oscillometric method. Basically, its the same technique used at your doctors office where they strap and inflate a cuff on your arm, except much smaller.
Hardware chip upgrade Accurate measurement and worry-free
Basically, BP Doctor has no difference in measuring method and data accuracy compared to the traditional upper-arm medical blood pressure monitor. Except it’s much smaller, convenient and comprehensive in use.

Can Smartwatches Detect Heart Problems
Researchers at the University of California have found that the popular smartwatch can detect heart rate problems with an accuracy of 97 percent and can even distinguish between a state of emergency and an increase in heart rate caused by excitement.
A study conducted by researchers at the University of California USA in 2017 with the developers of the Cardiogram application revealed that, besides being the best-selling wearable item, Apples smartwatch can also detect heart rate problems with a maximum accuracy of 97 percent.
Tested data for 6,000 users across the United States through a dedicated application , found that the smartwatch was able to locate users with atrial fibrillation , compared to healthy users.
The diagnosis included wearing the watch and a series of tests of heart rate and pulse at intervals of several hours between test and test.
The app knew whether it was a change in heart rate due to any event or excitement, as opposed to those who regularly suffer from the problem.
However, there is a downside to these promising results. The results were accurate only when the subjects were at rest, while active, the results were inaccurate and not trustable.
The studies also showed that the Apple watch can also accurately detect sleep apnea you can read more on the subject in this related article.
