What causes high blood pressure?

Randomized, Parallel-Group, Double-Blind Trials in Patients with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder

The efficacy and safety of LDX in the treatment of ADHD were evaluated in six randomized, parallel-group, double-blind, phase III trials . Three trials , were forced-dose titration studies in which patients were randomized to receive once-daily LDX 30, 50, or 70 mg, or placebo for 4 weeks . In these trials, dose increases followed a predefined schedule: patients randomized to LDX 30 mg received this dose throughout the study patients randomized to LDX 50 mg received 30 mg/day during week 1 and 50 mg/day during weeks 24 patients randomized to LDX 70 mg received 30 mg/day during week 1, 50 mg/day during week 2, and 70 mg/day during weeks 34. The remaining three trials utilized dose-optimization protocols: study 403 was placebo controlled, study 325 was placebo and active controlled, and study 317 was a head-to-head comparison of LDX and ATX. In these studies, patients randomized to LDX were individually optimized to LDX 30, 50, or 70 mg/day during weeks 14 based on efficacy and tolerability . Patients randomized to the reference treatment OROS-MPH in study 325 were individually optimized to 18, 36, or 54 mg/day . Patients randomized to the control treatment ATX in study 317 were optimized to 0.51.2 mg/kg if under 70 kg in weight, or 40, 80, or 100 mg/day in patients weighing 70 kg or over .

Misuse can lead to addiction. Some people may also develop addiction when taking Vyvanse as prescribed. With addiction, its difficult to stop taking a drug even though it may be causing harm.

Symptoms of Vyvanse misuse can include:

  • aggressive or hostile behavior

Are There Dangerous Drug Interactions With Vyvanse

There are many important drug interactions with Vyvanse, some of which can be serious or fatal. You can review these interactions here.

Keep a list of the medicines you take and show them to your doctor and pharmacist before you start a new medicine. This includes over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, herbs or other dietary supplements. Do not start any new medicine while taking Vyvanse without talking to your doctor first.

Your doctor or pharmacist should check to see if you are taking any drugs that can interact with Vyvanse when you start treatment, and they should also review for drug interactions each time you start a medicine.

One important interaction is between Vyvanse and a class of drugs known as MAO inhibitors. Do not use Vyvanse if you have taken an MAO inhibitor in the past 14 days due to the chance for a dangerous, possibly fatal drug interaction.

  • MAO inhibitors, or drugs with these properties, include medicines such as isocarboxazid, linezolid, methylene blue injection, phenelzine, procarbazine, rasagiline, selegiline, tranylcypromine, and others.
  • Combining MAOIs with Vyvanse can lead to dangerous high blood pressure that can be deadly.

Prolonged Vyvanse Use And The Brain

Prescription stimulants and amphetamine compounds have been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to treat attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder, and are classified as Schedule II substances because of their high potential for abuse and dependence. Stimulants are designed to increase concentration and energy levels while decreasing the need for sleep and suppressing the appetite.

Vyvanse does this by increasing the activity of several neurotransmitters, such as serotonin, norepinephrine, and dopamine. The changes in dopamine activity trigger the brains reward center and the ability to feel pleasure without the chemical support of the drug.

Those who become dependent on Vyvanse can experience feelings of depression, have trouble falling asleep or staying asleep, or notice a distinct lack of motivation as a result of running out of Vyvanse. Abusing Vyvanse can increase suicidal thoughts or aggressive behavior, and someone who is abusing the drug for extended periods will experience the emotional toll it takes during withdrawal.

Natural dopamine production will be inhibited, which causes low moods and the inability to experience pleasure without the drug. The longer Vyvanse is used, the more intense the mood swings will become when it is absent from the body. These problems can be fixed over time with long-term abstinence.

Vyvanse And The Circulatory And Respiratory Systems

Best Ways To Lower Your High Blood Pressure

One of the more common cardiovascular system side effects is a slightly faster heart rate. You may also have a substantial elevation in heart rate or blood pressure, but this is less common. It can also cause cardiac arrhythmias.

Vyvanse can also cause problems with circulation. You may have circulation problems if your fingers and toes feel cold or numb, or if your skin turns blue or red. If that happens, tell your doctor.

Rarely, Vyvanse can cause shortness of breath.

Vyvanse can affect your digestive system. Some of the more common digestive system problems include:

  • dry mouth

List Of Lisdexamfetamine Side Effects

Stimulants like lisdexamfetamine can produce an overabundance of dopamine, flooding the brain with a sensation of pleasure. Despite any severe side effects of Vyvanse that you can experience as a result of misuse, a build-up of physical tolerance to it will make it more difficult to quit using. When a person develops a tolerance to a drug, they have to use more of it to experience the same side effects. Over time, this becomes physical dependence and eventually addiction.

Impact On Growth In Children

Does Vyvanse Cause Lasting Brain Damage?

Reductions in weight and expected height gains have been reported in multiple clinical trials assessing the use of stimulants for treatments of ADHD in children.

A 2016 controlled cohort study of children aged 6 to 12 found a delay in height growth related to the dose of stimulant medication but found no significant delay in bone age after three years of treatment. It was concluded that this lack of correlation between growth and bone age might negatively affect a childs growth potential.

A 2017 follow-up of a long-term observational study of children with ADHD assessed the group in early adulthood. It looked at the effects of long-term treatment with stimulant medications.

It showed that extended use of medications consistently from childhood to adulthood was associated with greater suppression of adult height but without a relative reduction in the severity of symptoms in adulthood.

Children should be carefully monitored by their healthcare provider while they are taking Vyvanse. Their healthcare provider may stop treatment if a problem is found.
