Cardiologists Are Looking Forward To The Future Of Blood Pressure Tech But The Field Still Needs To Catch Up
Its been over two years since Samsung first announced that its Galaxy Watch would be able to measure peoples blood pressure. The feature is available in a number of countries, including South Korea, but not in the United States the company is still awaiting Food and Drug Administration clearance. In the meantime, other smartwatch companies have started experimenting with blood pressure tech in a bid for monitors on their devices. Fitbit announced a study trialing a blood pressure monitor in April, and Apple is reportedly working on its own version, as well.
Adding a blood pressure monitor to smartwatches could arguably be more important for users cardiovascular health than the heart rate and rhythm monitors they have now, says says Ann Marie Navar, a cardiologist at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center. Blood pressure measurement is something we need to do a lot more a lot of, she says.
Were not ready for primetime yet
But its still not clear how reliable smartwatch-measured blood pressure could be. Measuring blood pressure is much harder than tracking heart rate and rhythm, and getting it right is arguably even more important. Were not ready for primetime yet, says Jordana Cohen, an assistant professor of medicine at the University of Pennsylvania who studies hypertension.

Calibrate Samsung Galaxy Watch
Samsung Galaxy Watch 5 Pro
Now that you have everything on the watch that you need. Let’s get into how to actually take a reading. The first thing you’re going to need to do is calibrate it with a blood pressure monitor. Ideally, Samsung suggests using one that sits on your upper arm to get the most reliable results.
Step 1: Open the Samsung Health Monitor app on your phone and tap the blood pressure tab.
Step 2: You’ll be prompted to calibrate the watch with a cuff-based blood pressure monitor. In this example, we’ve used a Kinetik advanced blood pressure monitor.
Step 3: Next, get the blood pressure monitor cuff in place on your arm. Make sure you’re sitting down, relaxed and you have your arm positioned level with your heart.
Step 4: Place your Samsung smartwatch on the wrist opposite to the one you’re wearing the blood pressure monitor cuff.
Step 5: When prompted on the app, start the blood pressure monitor and then the watch will start doing its own measuring seconds later. It takes around 30 seconds to take a reading.
Step 6: When reading is completed, you’ll be asked to manually add in the data from the blood pressure monitor into the Samsung Health Monitor app. It will be two numbers you’ll need to input.
Step 7: You’ll need to repeat this process three times in total before you can take the cuff off.

How To Enable Blood Pressure Monitoring On Samsung Galaxy Watch 4
The Apple Watch dominates the wearable industry in terms of popularity and features. However, the biggest drawback is that the Apple Watch only works with an iPhone. The Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 is a solid option for Android users.
Its the only smartwatch in Android land to run the latest version of Wear OS with Samsungs One UI Watch. While it has many health tracking abilities, it misses some important features based on your region. For example, Blood Pressure monitoring isnt available on the Galaxy Watch 4 in the US region at the time of writing in April 2022.
Thankfully, there is a workaround for this issue. If you have a Galaxy Watch 4 or Galaxy Watch 4 Classic, heres how you can enable the Blood Pressure feature .
Apple’s Future Smartwatch May Feature An Inflatable Blood Pressure Sensor
Apple may finally be able to crack the egg on how to enable blood pressure monitoring on its smartwatches. The latest related patent filed by Apple has been found by Patently Apple. It details an attachable blood pressure sensor that may one day end up on a future Watch Series.
- Apple’s new patent hints towards a blood pressure device attached to the Apple Watch.
- The device will utilize an inflatable mechanism and air pump.
- It is unclear if the feature will end up on an actual Apple smartwatch.
Earlier this year, Bloombergreported that Apple has moved its plan to add blood pressure monitoring on its watches until 2024 after it faced several issues during testing. Fortunately, Apple’s engineers seem to possess a solution in their hands.

When To See A Doctor
If your readings are in the normal stage, keep up the good work!
If your readings are in the elevated stage, let your doctor know youd like to discuss options, such as lifestyle changes and medication, that may help bring your numbers down.
Consistent readings in the stage 1 or stage 2 high blood pressure categories require medical input. Let your healthcare professional know how many days your readings have been elevated, and what the numbers are. If you have to wait for an appointment, ask your doctor for guidance about lifestyle changes that may help bring those numbers down. These may include reducing salt intake, limiting alcohol, and alleviating stress.
One or more readings in the hypertensive crisis category mean you require immediate care. Call 911 or go to an emergency room right away.

$50 Smartwatch Vs $100+ Smartwatch
A shift in price point significantly impacts the kind, style, design, and functionality of the Smartwatch you select. However, low cost does not automatically imply low quality. In some instances, the reverse is true. At least in the case of a $50 smartwatch, if you know exactly what youre getting for that money.
To summarize, if youre a novice or a professional athlete just starting on your fitness adventure, we would suggest starting with a less expensive smartwatch. It is critical to conduct a thorough study on these devices before purchasing one. Before making a decision, read user reviews to obtain a better perception of the products.

Can The Samsung Galaxy Watch 5 Series Measure Your Blood Pressure
Believe it or not, your shiny new Galaxy Watch 5 can measure your blood pressure, a feature it borrows from its predecessor Galaxy Watch 4. As you might have guessed, its not as accurate as a traditional blood pressure cuff. And its intended for personal reference only and not for medical diagnosis or detecting or monitoring of any disease. So how do you take a blood pressure measurement with your Galaxy Watch 5? Well, its a bit tricky.
You cant start measuring blood pressure on your Galaxy Watch 5 right out of the box. Youll need to download the Samsung Health Monitor app on your watch and smartphone. In addition, youll also have to calibrate the watch using a blood pressure cuff. That means youll have to shell out money on a medical-grade cuff if you dont have one already. Moreover, youll have to calibrate the watch every four weeks.
XDA VIDEO OF THE DAY
Samsung Galaxy Watch : What’s Not So Good
There’s a lot to like about the Galaxy Watch 5, and it’s easily the best Android smartwatch on the market right now. That should come as no surprise, and there’s a good chance that it will retain that title until we see what Mobvoi’s next TicWatch brings, along with the Pixel Watch slated to arrive later this year. And while the overall experience of the Galaxy Watch 5 is what you would expect, there are a few sticking points that left me a bit disappointed.
When Samsung went on stage and touted battery life that can last up to 50 hours, I was understandably excited. I didn’t use the Galaxy Watch 4, but after spending the last year with the Apple Watch Series 7 as my daily driver, I was hoping to see a battery that could easily last for two days.
Unfortunately, that wasn’t the case, and I never even came close to reaching that. The closest I got was about 24 hours when the Watch 5 ended up running out of battery while I was sleeping.
And there were even pains on that front, as I expected that a 15% charge would last through the night, even with sleep tracking enabled. Unfortunately, it just wasn’t meant to be. There’s also some tinkering that you’ll need to do in order to make the most out of the battery.
It’s incredibly unreliable, as I found myself just giving up on trying to scroll with the bezel in favor of just using the touchscreen. If it works for some, then that’s fantastic and more power to you, but for me, it’s just something I rarely even remember is “there.”
