When purchasing a replacement cuff for an upper arm unit, please be certain to measure the circumference of your arm to purchase the correct cuff size. Please check the instruction manual for your specific unit. Electronic versions of the instruction manuals can be found in the Omron Product Support & Solutions Center.

How Do I Assemble And Apply The D

When the cuff is assembled correctly, the hook material will be on the outside of the cuff loop and the metal d-ring will not touch your skin. If the cuff is not assembled, pass the end of the cuff furthest from the tubing through the metal d-ring to form a loop. The smooth cloth should be on the inside of the cuff loop.

  • Remove tight fitting clothing from your upper arm.
  • Sit in a chair with your feet flat on the floor. Rest your left arm on a table so that the cuff is at the same level as your heart. Turn the palm of your hand upward.
  • Put your left arm through the cuff loop. the bottom of the cuff should be approximately ½ inch above the elbow. The cuff tab should lie over the brachial artery on the inside of the arm. The cuff tube should run down the center of the arm even with the middle finger.
  • Secure the cuff around your arm using the cloth closure. Pull the cuff so that the top and bottom edges are tightened evenly around your arm.
  • Make sure the cuff is wrapped firmly in place. You should be able to fit your index finger between the cuff and your arm easily.
  • Relax your arm and place your elbow on the table so that the cuff is at the same level as your heart.
  • Be sure there are no kinks in the air tubing.
  • I Keep Getting Error Messages When I Try To Take A Reading What Should I Do

    Blood Pressure Monitors For Home

Your health care provider may ask you to keep track of your blood pressure at home. To do this, you will need to get a home blood pressure monitor. The monitor you choose should be of good quality and fit well.

    MANUAL BLOOD PRESSURE MONITORS

    • Manual devices include a cuff that wraps around your arm, a rubber squeeze bulb, and a gauge that measures the blood pressure. A stethoscope is needed to listen to the blood pulsing through the artery.
    • You can see your blood pressure on the circular dial of the gauge as the needle moves around and the pressure in the cuff rises or falls.
    • When used correctly, manual devices are very accurate. However, they are not the recommended type of blood pressure monitor for home use.

    DIGITAL BLOOD PRESSURE MONITORS

    • A digital device will also have a cuff that wraps around your arm. To inflate the cuff, you may need to use a rubber squeeze ball. Other kinds will inflate automatically when you push a button.
    • After the cuff is inflated, the pressure will slowly drop on its own. The screen will show a digital readout of your systolic and diastolic blood pressure.
    • After showing your blood pressure, the cuff will deflate on its own. With most machines, you must wait for 2 to 3 minutes before using it again.
    • A digital blood pressure monitor will not be as accurate if your body is moving when you are using it. Also, an irregular heart rate will make the reading less accurate. However, digital monitors are the best choice for most people.

How To Use A Sphygmomanometer Understanding The Readings

So, you have used the Sphygmomanometer to take readings on yourself, or whomever you are taking care of, and it is now time to decipher what youve recorded.

Generally speaking, a normal test will read something like 120/80 .

If you have recorded a reading between 120 and 139 for systolic and 80 to 89 for diastolic, it could mean that the patient has possible prehypertension.

If you take readings and they are more severe than you expected do not panic. False readings can occur and you should always take more than one.

Wait a few hours, reapply the cuff and try again. In the interim, ensure that you do not consume any stimulants such as coffee, or do extreme physical exercise.

If after taking further readings the situation remains the same, you should arrange a trip to your doctor for reading there, and further advice about your blood pressure and what to do.

Choosing A Home Blood Pressure Monitor

The American Heart Association recommends an automatic, cuff-style, bicep monitor.

    • Wrist and finger monitors are not recommended because they yield less reliable readings.
    • Choose a monitor that has been validated. If you are unsure, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice or find options at validatebp.org.
    • When selecting a blood pressure monitor for a senior, pregnant woman or child, make sure it is validated for these conditions.
    • Make sure the cuff fits measure around your upper arm and choose a monitor that comes with the correct size cuff.

    Blood Pressure Cuff Over Clothing

How To Use a Blood Pressure Cuff

A cuff should never be placed around clothing because your measurement wont be accurate. If youre at home, wear a loose, shirt sleeve shirt. Do the same prior to going to your doctor appointment.

In addition, if you happen to have a long sleeve shirt on, take it off instead of rolling up your sleeve. Often rolling up your sleeve causes the sleeve to tighten up around your arm.

Two reasons why this is incorrect. One, the tight sleeve acts as a tourniquet and can affect blood flow . Two, it frequently results in less room and may cause the cuff placement to be too low.

Maintaining a healthy blood pressure is key to staying healthy. Therefore, monitoring yours on a regular basis can be a life-saver, according to Joyce M. Oen-Hsiao, MD, director of the cardiac rehabilitation program and medical director of the cardiac telemetry unit at the Yale New Haven Hospitals Heart and Vascular Center. Long-standing high blood pressure can cause damage to the small vessels in your body and also cause the heart to thicken and stiffen, she explains. Checking your blood pressure can help you and your doctor figure out if you need medications or that your medications are working.”

    Monitoring Blood Pressure5 Key Points

POINT1Make sure you are comfortable and relaxed

Your physical or mental conditions immediately before measuring your blood pressure affect your readings. So if you are frustrated or nervous, you won’t be able to take an accurate reading. Before measuring your blood pressure, rest in a chair for 1 or 2 minutes. It’s recommended that you take 5 or 6 deep breaths before you start the measurement.

    POINT2Empty your bladder and bowels

Measure your blood pressure several minutes after you have emptied your bladder and bowels. Do not measure your blood pressure when you have an urge to urinate or defecate.

POINT3Sit on a chair with your legs flat on the floor and secure the cuff to your arm/wrist

Maintaining a correct sitting posture and correct application of the cuff are the keys for getting accurate blood pressure readings. Sit up straight with your back against the chair and keep relaxed, with your legs uncrossed. To make the height of your arm or wrist aligned with the heart level , adjust the height of the desk with a book or cushion if the desk is too low. The cuff should be wrapped snuggly and securely.

POINT4Measure your blood pressure at about the same time each day

Checking blood pressure readings regularly over a long period makes your monitored data more effective in the detection and prevention of hypertension. Choose the time period when you are in the most stable condition and take a blood pressure reading at about the same time each day.

Tips for using a blood pressure cuff or wireless blood pressure monitor for accurate readings.

Taking your blood pressure at home is easy with a digital blood pressure monitor.

Every time your heart beats, it pumps blood through your circulatory system, putting pressure on your blood vessels — the veins, arteries and capillaries. This is known as your blood pressure and without it, your bones, muscles, organs and other tissues wouldn’t get the oxygen and nutrients they need. Your body’s various systems, like the immune and digestive systems, also wouldn’t function without blood pressure.

But there can always be too much of a good thing, right? High blood pressure, also known as hypertension, occurs when the force against your blood vessel walls becomes too high, which can kick your heart into overdrive and lead to serious health problems like heart attack and stroke.

What Your Blood Pressure Reading Means

Blood pressure readings include two numbers. The top number is called the systolic blood pressure and it changes with every heartbeat, says Dr. Del Conde. When the heart contracts and pumps extra blood into the circulatory system, the pressure increases. This increased pressure corresponds to the top number, or the systolic blood pressure.

The bottom number is called the diastolic blood pressure. When the heart is at rest and not contracting, the pressure that exists within the system is called the diastolic pressure, says Dr. Del Conde.

    Mark Down Your Results

If you want, write down your electronic blood pressure monitor reading in a notebook or any paper. You might also record the date and time given after pressing “memory” or “store” if these buttons exist on your device. Before turning off the machine, though, make sure that you know the results of your electronic device readings. Otherwise, you will have to start all over!
