Horny Goat Weed Benefits

Marijuana (Cannabis) and Blood Pressure

Does horny goat weed work in treating any of the issues listed above? Its hard to say definitively. But many do suggest positive potential in the herb. Its a smart idea to ensure this supplement is right for you by talking with your physician. Documented benefits include:

  • Erectile Dysfunction
  • One cause of erectile dysfunction is a high protein lev phosphodiesterase type 5 , which interferes with your bodys ability to produce nitric oxide and cGMP. During aging, these components show functional decay.

Icariin can suppress the levels of PDE5, allowing blood to go precisely where its supposed to. Besides, horny goat weeds possible blood-thinning properties make it an enticing option for those combating erectile dysfunction.

The studies that support this come from the test tube and animal tests. Researchers found that rats treated with an extract of horny goat weed over weeks showed improved erectile function. In test tubes, another study found that icariin is effective in inhibiting PDE5.

Icariin can also enhance the growth of the hearts smooth muscles, which helps blood flow to the penis. It may show a viable treatment for those with diabetes-associated erectile dysfunction.

Can You Use Indica Or Sativa For High Blood Pressure

With all this in mind, youll now want to know whether to use Indica or Sativa for high blood pressure. As with many elements of medical cannabis, this is an area thats largely under-studied. However, there are some studies we can turn to that offer useful advice.

This study focused on the use of THC-dominant marijuana in patients with glaucoma who were at risk of losing their eyesight due to rising intra-ocular pressure. Initially, the study participants saw a marked increase in their blood pressure. After a short while, their systolic and diastolic pressure fell, suggesting that the THC present in cannabis can lower blood pressure. As Sativa strains of cannabis have a higher THC content that Indica strains, this suggests it could lower blood pressure within moments of using it.

Another study that takes a different approach looks at the rises in blood pressure among those who abruptly stop using cannabis. Those who chose to stop their daily cannabis habit found that their blood pressure rose by more than 20mmHg at the systolic value, which is the value that carries the most risk. The studys conclusion was that those who want to stop using cannabis should be monitored to ensure theres no dangerous rise in blood pressure, suggestions that using it does come with some cardio-protective benefits.

I’ve Always Had A Healthy Reading And After Smoking It Dropped Significantly

I was at a concert, and I smoked right before. I’m on a diet, so I hadn’t been eating too much. I didn’t drink enough water that day, too. I wS so excited for the concert, sat front row, and fainted twice. I didn’t have a drop of alcohol all day. I’ve always had healthy/normal bp readings, but this time it was extremely low. I finally came to about fifteen minutes later, and was able to get my spot back in the front row 🙂 I smoke occasionally, but have never fainted in my life. The paramedics concluded that smoking marijuana accounted for my low blood pressure, and I would agree.

The Aging Process Can Affect How Older Adults Respond To Cannabis

As we age, our body and mind functions begin to slow down. Some of these changes will affect how THC and CBD are processed in the body.

    • Lower kidney function can affect how drugs, including cannabis, are cleared out of the body.
    • Symptoms of poor lung health or disease can be worsened when cannabis is smoked or vaped.
    • The digestive system slows down, and liver function is reduced, affecting how the body processes and removes cannabis from the body.
    • Changes to muscles, bones, and sensory functions can increase the risk of falls or injuries. This risk would be higher when using THC because it is impairing.

45 year old white male, 200 pounds, 5 foot 9. I started at 45 and have become a fairly heavy edible user. I take it for nerve pain and was taking way too much for about 4 months daily. . I thought you had to get pretty high for it to work. I read that it increases bp , And started monitoring it at home. In the past few days. Repeatedly, My bottom number jumps to the high 90s and even as high as 104, Three hours after swallowing the edible. But, This is the weird part. My systolic gets better and better. Its normally in the 130s and it goes as low as 111, Which is unheard of for me. Some slight good news: When I breathe in super deep and slowly let it out, My diastolic goes back down to 86, From 104, While Im high! But I cant keep breathing like this. Its untenable. And its stressing me out. Ive been trying to dose it better. Ive reduced to 15 mg right now, So I will knock it down to 5 and see if that makes any difference. If not, I wont be able to take it until I lose weight , Or just when Im feeling suicidal from the pain.

Does Thc Negatively Affect Your Heart Health

Marijuana use, and specifically THC, can affect the heart in dangerous ways.

THC turns on the sympathetic nervous system. This is your fight or flight response. When this happens, it can:

    • Elevate your heart rate

    • Increase the amount of oxygen that your heart needs

    • Cause an irregular heart rhythm or extra heart beats

    • Activate platelets , which may increase risk of heart attack or stroke

Smoking marijuana in particular poses additional risks, including irritating the lungs and increasing carbon monoxide in the blood, which can put additional strain on the heart.

    How Marijuana Impacts Blood Pressure

To date, most of the little research examining marijuanas impact on blood pressure has been observational, measuring the association between factors and outcomes. These are less reliable than randomized clinical studies, but they give us some answers.

A systematic review early in 2020 found that two million people in the US with heart disease have reported using cannabis and indicated that smoking marijuana might present similar risks to smoking tobacco. Another observational study observed an increase in cannabis-related hospital visits following Colorados recreational legalization. While the emergency-room trips were related to intoxication and vomiting, there was a noticeable difference between smoked and ingested marijuana.

However, more recent studies have shown that marijuana lowers blood pressure. An analysis of elderly adults with hypertension saw a reduction in blood pressure values following cannabis use.

    How Cannabis Impacts Blood Pressure

Cannabis works primarily by modulating a system in the human body known as the endocannabinoid system. This system includes chemicals naturally produced by the human body called endocannabinoids, cannabinoid receptors, which are activated by endocannabinoids, and enzymes which clear the endocannabinoids from the body. This system is believed to be responsible for maintaining homeostasis or balance in a wide range of bodily functions, including mood, sleep, energy, hunger, and pain response.

The chemicals in cannabis, called cannabinoids, are also able to trigger these cannabinoid receptors, and thus modulate many of the functions that the endocannabinoid system is involved in regulating.

Studies have revealed that the endocannabinoid system plays a key role in cardiovascular activity. In animal studies looking at these cardiac factors, researchers have noted that activation of this system can cause significant changes in heart rate, blood vessel constriction, inflammation, oxidation, and blood pressure both increasing and decreasing blood pressure in different contexts.

In cardiovascular disease states we generally see an upregulation of the endocannabinoid system, so researchers believe that the bodys endocannabinoids play a role in the progression of cardiovascular disease.

In particular, there are studies that show an association between an overactive endocannabinoid system and maladies like arterial, pulmonary and portal hypertension.

Does The Use Of Weed Lower Your Blood Pressure

The initial increase in blood pressure is rarely dangerous, especially for users with a high-risk factor, which leads to a decrease in blood pressure. Continued use of the drug will lead to greater tolerance and a slow decrease in blood pressure. This lowering of blood pressure can be experienced as dizziness after smoking marijuana. Some studies report that if marijuana is used when standing up, the increase of blood pressure may be lower than expected with only a drop in blood pressure. Anandamide, released by the body, helps to reduce arterial pressure by relaxing blood vessels. However, the discussion is quite complex. There are some components of cannabis that help to lower blood pressure other parts of the plant will have different effects on your blood pressure.Different strains of cannabis may have different effects on blood pressure. Sativa strains are more stimulating and may lead to a rise in blood pressure. Indica strains are more relaxing and help to reduce blood pressure. If you are worried, make sure that you get your heart rate monitored while using marijuana. Everyone will react differently to each strain of marijuana.

    What The Risks Mean

Because marijuana can increase blood pressure and heart rate, it is important to be careful especially if you have high blood pressure already. Although the link between marijuana and cardiovascular complications is unclear, cardiovascular problems like stroke can be devastating. It is important to consult your doctor about marijuana use if you have high blood pressure or other cardiovascular disease risk factors.

Acute Effects: Marijuana And Blood Pressure

According to Harvard Health, research has consistently shown that marijuana temporarily raises heart rate and dilates blood vessels, causing a modest dose-dependent increase in blood pressure. Together, these actions force the heart to pump harder, which can be dangerous for people with heart disease.

Research published in Cardiology in Review, suggests that the risk of heart attack is up to four times higher during the first 60 minutes of smoking marijuana. While this does not pose a threat to healthy people, it should be a red flag for people with a known heart condition. Other studies have shown a link between marijuana and atrial fibrillation, a common heart rhythm disorder.

To investigate the above claims, medical researchers at the Society of General Internal Medicine recently reviewed the acute effects of THC of several cardiac parameters, including heart rate and blood pressure. Their analysis included six clinical trials on blood pressure, after excluding studies with animal models and less than 20 participants.

In one randomized controlled trial , low concentrations of THC caused a drop in systolic blood pressure when smoked or injected. Another clinical trial of more inferior quality also found a decrease in systolic blood pressure at similar concentrations.

The problem with the studies I found is that most of them are focused only on one cannabinoid in the cannabis plant the psychoactive, tetrahydrocannabinol .

Other than THC, cannabis contains more than 100 other cannabinoids and over 200 different terpenes.

Today, we have hundreds of different strains on the market, each with a different ratio of THC to CBD and each with different medical effects.

THC has been shown to make some people anxious, sometimes even paranoid .

Elevated heart rate always goes hand in hand with anxiety, therefore its almost expected for some users to get an increase in blood pressure.

Exclusive bonus: that will show you the exact step-by-step process Dr. Dustin Sulak used to successfully treat more than 18,000 patients with cannabis.

On the other hand, the second most abundant cannabinoid, the one thats been stealing the spotlight lately, seems to have a completely opposite effect on blood pressure than THC.

Im talking, of course, about cannabidiol, or better known as CBD famous for reducing all types of anxiety and inflammation.

According to a small study published in JCI Insight, a single dose of CBD lowers systolic blood pressure. Researchers found that CBD relaxes smooth muscle cells in the arteries, widens the blood vessels, thus providing a smoother blood flow and a lower blood pressure.

What Is High Blood Pressure Or Hypertension

Hypertension is just a different title for high blood pressure. It raises the pressure of blood in the arteries and decreases the blood flow. Arteries are useful to carry blood from the heart across the body. Hypertension causes the blood to press against course walls. High blood pressure takes years to develop, and thus described as a silent killer.

If the pressure is high enough that reduces blood flow, this may cause serious medical problems, including coronary artery disease. If high blood pressure is left untreated, high blood pressure can also prompt stroke, hypertensive coronary illness, kidney disease, and aortic aneurysm.

The blood pressure must be under a systolic value of 140 mmHg and under a diastolic value of 90 mmHg to consider it normal. However, lifestyle and dietary changes can cause high blood pressure and the risk of complications much of the time. If you suffer from high blood pressure, you can find pharmaceutical drugs like Calcium channel blockers and beta-blockers to lower blood pressure. Beta-blockers work by preventing the effects of adrenaline .

EXTENDED – Dr. Oz Talks Sleep, Medical Marijuana, High Blood Pressure, & Health Tips for 2019

Smoked cannabis may raise the risk of cardiovascular failure by 4.8 times for the first hour after smoking. In some cases, cannabis has been embroiled in an uncommon condition called cannabis arteritis, although there have just been many cases. Arteritis is irritation and sores in the arteries leading to Necrosis.

There have just been less than 100 cases archived, so the connection to cannabis is not clear. However, any individual with arthritis or Buergers disease, which relates to cigarette smoking, should carefully observe blood pressure when utilizing medicinal marijuana.

Heavy exercise could cause serious problems like high blood pressure and pulse. After that, theres a risk of cardiac issues. Thats why someone who might be in excellent well-being will occasionally go into a cardiac arrest after running a long-distance race. Besides, thats why those vulnerable to heart attack have to take care of their physical activities as the condition is a silent killer.

Pulse will return to typical in the minutes after the stimulus however, this happens much slower in those with known or obscure cardiovascular conditions. Pulse and blood pressure may stay raised for a more extended timeframe in these persons, leading to cardiac issues and heart attack from smoking weed. Several studies hint that the danger of heart attack is many times higher in the hour after smoking cannabis.

    What Is High Blood Pressure

Each time a persons heart beats, blood is pumped through their circulatory system. Blood pressure is created by the amount of force that this process places on the walls of their arteries and veins. Hypertension, also known as high blood pressure, occurs when this pressure is higher than it should be. Hypertension is sometimes referred to as the silent killer because it often does not have any symptoms. When symptoms do occur, it is generally only when hypertension has increased to life-threatening levels.

Hypertension increases a persons risk of cardiovascular disease, heart attack, and stroke. Poor diet, physical inactivity, obesity, poor diet, stress, tobacco, and alcohol use all can be factors that can increase the risk of developing hypertension.
