Does Tylenol Cause High Blood Pressure

Tylenol Linked To High Blood Pressure In Women

IBUPROFÈNE ET HTA./HOW DOES IBUPROFEN AFFECT BLOOD PRESSURE?

Women taking daily amounts of non-aspirin painkillers such as an extra-strength Tylenol are more likely to develop high blood pressure than those who dont, a new study suggests.

While many popular over-the-counter painkillers have been linked before to high blood pressure, acetaminophen, sold as Tylenol, has generally been considered relatively free of such risk.

It is the only one that is not a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug or NSAID, a class of medications the federal government just required to carry stricter warning labels because of the risk for heart-related problems. Those include ibuprofen and naproxen . Many had turned to those painkillers in the wake of problems with prescription drugs, such as Vioxx.

However, the new study found that women taking Tylenol were about twice as likely to develop blood pressure problems. Risk also rose for women taking NSAIDS other than aspirin.

If youre taking these over-the-counter medications at high dosages on a regular basis, make sure that you report it to your doctor and youre checking your blood pressure, said Dr. Christie Ballantyne, a cardiologist at the Methodist DeBakey Heart Center in Houston who had no role in the study.

The research found that aspirin still remains the safest medicine for pain relief. It has long been known to reduce the risk of cardiovascular problems and was not included in the governments requirement for stricter labels for NSAIDs.

Acetaminophen May Boost Blood Pressure

For people with cardiovascular disease who need relief from aches and pains, acetaminophen has long been touted as a safer alternative to aspirin or nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs like ibuprofen. A small but important Swiss trial warns that it may not be. This work doesn’t mean you should ditch acetaminophen if it helps you, but does suggest you should give it the caution that it and every medication deserves.

This Reader Wants To Know If Acetaminophen Will Raise Blood Pressure:

Q. I have taken NSAIDs for pain relief, but they bump up my blood pressure. When I had some dental work done, I took Advil for the throbbing pain. When I checked my blood pressure, it had spiked about 40 points over my usual number.

Is Tylenol less likely to be a problem? I try to avoid pain meds as much as possible, but occasionally I have to take something.

A Closer Look At Acetaminophen

The Swiss team set out to fill a surprising gap in medical knowledge: the effect of acetaminophen on blood pressure among people with coronary artery disease. This includes folks with angina along with anyone who has had bypass surgery or angioplasty or who has been diagnosed with cholesterol-clogged arteries.

The researchers asked 33 men and women with one or more of these problems to take either 1,000 milligrams of acetaminophen or an identical placebo three times a day for two weeks. Then, after a two-week break, each volunteer took the other treatment. The amount of acetaminophen used in the study is a standard daily dose for pain.

When the participants took acetaminophen, average systolic blood pressure increased from 122.4 to 125.3, while the average diastolic pressure increased from 73.2 to 75.4. Blood pressure stayed steady when participants took the placebo. These increases aren’t large. But they indicate that acetaminophen, like NSAIDs, somehow affects the cardiovascular system.

A larger, longer trial would have given more reliable results. It would also have been unethical, since none of the participants were in pain. That means they couldn’t reap any benefit from acetaminophen, but could only be harmed by it.

NSAIDs like ibuprofen and naproxen sodium can produce several effects on your body that may further worsen high blood pressure. NSAIDs can:

Impact sodium and water retention in the kidneys

Increase resistance of blood vessels , which can raise blood pressure.

Additionally, NSAIDs have a clearly established mechanism of interaction between certain high blood pressure treatments, such as diuretics, and can reduce the effectiveness of previously prescribed high blood pressure treatments.

Similar effects have not been established for acetaminophen, the active ingredient in TYLENOL®.

Percocet Effect On Blood Pressure

Percocet is a combination of Oxycodone and Acetaminophen, two drugs that are used to cure any kind of moderate to almost severe pain, which can affect your high blood pressure medication.

Oxycodone is a group of active components whose function is to relieve narcotic pain and relax the individual’s mind.

Acetaminophen is a non-narcotic drug which helps accelerate pain relieving process. But, taking too much can cause serious possibly fatal liver disease.

Have a talk with your doctor if you are allergic to any of these drugs, and especially if you are taking Percocet and high blood pressure sufferer.

For me it was life threatening with me taking Percocet and a high blood pressure sufferer. My blood pressure increased sharply just after taking the second pill.

I was prescribed Percocet after I hurt my knee while exercising. My knees were swollen and very painful. Within minutes of taking the first pill my pain was gone, but after taking the second pill which was more than six hours later, I was nauseous and my blood pressure was high, 160/94. Before taking Percocet, my blood pressure reading was 125/88.

My blood pressure control is all alternative treatments since my life-threatening allergic reaction to my blood pressure medication. So I cannot afford any spike in my measurements. I monitor my readings at least twice daily.

Taking Decongestants With Other Medicines

Ask a pharmacist or GP before taking decongestants if youâre taking other medicines.

For example, taking decongestants alongside some antidepressants can cause a dangerous rise in blood pressure.

Itâs also important to be careful when taking other medicines if youâre using an âall-in-1â decongestant remedy.

âAll-in-1â decongestants also contain painkillers or antihistamines, so it could be dangerous to take extra doses of these medicines at the same time.

Do Pain Relievers Raise Blood Pressure

New Study Shows No Increase in Men Experts Question Findings

Findings show that men who regularly took the pain relievers were no more likely than those who didn’t to have persistent high blood pressure, also known as hypertension.

So do men and women really have different risks? Probably not, says cardiologist and study researcher Michael Gaziano, MD, of Boston’s Brigham and Women’s Hospital and the VA Boston Health System.

Instead, the conflicting findings suggest that more study is needed to pin down the heart risks associated with long-term use of over-the-counter pain relievers.

“I don’t think anybody should be worried about using these drugs for short periods,” he tells WebMD.

Overdose Signs And Acute Liver Failure

WARNING: Painkillers Cause High Blood Pressure, Especially In Women – by Dr Sam Robbins

The initial signs and symptoms of an overdose include diarrhea, sweating and a loss of appetite. Vomiting, stomach cramps and abdominal pain are common. Because the liver is located in the upper right quadrant of the abdomen, a person may experience pain, swelling and tenderness in that region.

There are four distinct phases of Tylenol-induced poisoning. It is critical to seek help immediately if you experience any of the following symptoms because complete liver failure can occur within 72 hours of ingesting the drug.

Phase I
This occurs in the first 24 hours after an overdose. People usually experience nausea, tiredness , anorexia, vomiting, paleness and excessive sweating .
Phase II
In the next 18 to 72 hours, patients may develop right-upper quadrant abdominal pain. Nausea and vomiting continue. In addition, fast heartbeat and low blood pressure may be present.
Phase III
This phase begins about 72 to 96 hours after ingesting the drug. Symptoms of liver failure or liver damage include jaundice, hypoglycemia , bleeding and loss of brain function from toxins. Multiple organ failure and death may also occur at this stage.
Phase IV
Patients who survive Phase III spend this time in recovery. This phase lasts four days to three weeks. Symptoms resolve during this period.

Reader Question: Will Acetaminophen Raise Blood Pressure

Q: I have taken NSAIDs for pain relief, but they bump up my blood pressure. I had some dental work done, and I took Advil for the throbbing pain. When I checked my blood pressure, it had spiked about 40 points over my usual number.

Is Tylenol less likely to be a problem? I try to avoid pain meds as much as possible, but occasionally I have to take something.

A: Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as ibuprofen or naproxen can raise blood pressure . Pain can also increase BP.

The makers of Tylenol are advertising that their pain reliever wont raise blood pressure the way that Advil, Aleve or Motrin sometimes can. That sounds reassuring, but you will notice that the commercial does not say acetaminophen wont raise blood pressure at all.

Researchers have found that both acetaminophen and NSAIDs independently increase the risk of hypertension in women . There is also a similar association in men .

Occasional use may not pose a problem. Aspirin does not appear to increase blood pressure the way other NSAIDs do.

Nasal Congestion High Blood Pressure

Use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs is on the rise . Were talking about drugs like ibuprofen and naproxen. Such pain relievers are perceived as quite safe, since they have been available over the counter for decades. But there is growing evidence that prescription NSAIDs like celecoxib, diclofenac and meloxicam, as well as OTC ibuprofen and naproxen, can impact blood pressure. There are also concerns about heart attacks and other cardiovascular complications. The higher the dose the greater the risk, as this reader discovered.

A review of the causes of hypertension came up with these mechanisms :

Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs increase blood pressure by influencing prostaglandin production causing adverse renal effects. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs also increase systemic vascular resistance by increased endothelin-1 synthesis and by altered arachidonic metabolism. In 9,411 patients aged 65 years and older, use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs increased the risk of starting antihypertensive drug treatment 1.55 times if low daily doses were used, 1.64 times if medium daily doses were used, and 1.82 times if high daily doses were used.

Other Options For Pain:

A. Ask your doctor whether topical NSAIDs like diclofenac gel would help your pain without causing hypertension. There is research to suggest that when diclofenac is used as a spray, gel or patch, it is substantially less likely to cause stomach upset or ulcers compared to the oral formulation . That doesnt mean it is safe, just safer than pills.

Since you discovered that you are susceptible to ibuprofen and high blood pressure, you will need to be very especially careful. You will need to monitor your blood pressure even with a topical NSAID. We have heard from readers who report good success, though.

I dont use a lot since it is very easily spread . My blood pressure is normal. I would not be without it and was lucky to talk the nurse out of a sample one day.

Not everyone can tolerate topical NSAIDs, though.

My doctor prescribed Voltaren Gel since pain meds upset my stomach. It didnt upset my stomach, but on the fourth day of applying it, I broke out in a rash all over my arms and legs. I had to stop using it.
