When the cuff pressure falls below the patient’s diastolic pressure, blood flows smoothly through the artery in the usual pulses, without any vibration being set up in the wall. Vibrations occur at any point where the cuff pressure is sufficiently high that the blood has to push the arterial wall open in order to flow through the artery.

Because blood pressure can fluctuate greatly in response to movement, medication, and other factors, we decided we did not have the resources to give a valid accuracy rating. Instead, we determined each devices reading consistency.
We calculated the standard deviation of the back-to-back systolic and diastolic readings on each device. We did this for both the morning and afternoon tests we’ve included the average standard deviations for each device listed above. As the cuff continues to deflate, it reaches your diastolic pressure, and the vibration stops. The meter senses this, and records the pressure again.

How Do Blood Pressure Monitors Really Work
31 January 2020- Blood pressure monitors are common on both hospital wards and in outpatient areas. They are in use every day, yet many people still do not know the technique behind them. It is high time that we learn how these blood pressure measuring devices actually work.
It is not very difficult to measure a persons blood pressure. The classic method, which can be traced back to Italian physician Scipione Riva-Roccis auscultatory technique, requires only a stethoscope and an arm cuff hooked up to a manometer.
The arm cuff is pumped full of air, cutting off the circulation in the brachial artery, and the pressure is then released gradually. If it drops below the systolic blood pressure level, the blood flow through the artery will return. However, the blood flow will be turbulent for as long as the artery remains partially compressed. This results in a muffled, pulsating noise phenomenon known as Korotkoff sounds, which can be counted by placing a stethoscope on the brachial artery or by integrating a microphone into the measurement cuff. Systolic blood pressure readings can be taken from the manometer as soon as they occur. The Korotkoff sounds disappear as soon as compression of the artery is released completely and the blood can flow again smoothly. The cuff pressure as measured at this point corresponds to the diastolic blood pressure.
Omron’s Healthcare Heart Guide
Omron, a leader in traditional home blood pressure monitors, has introduced a model that has an inflatable cuff built into the wristband of a fitness tracker and that syncs up with an app on your phone. CR did test the Omron Healthcare Heart Guide BP8000-M Blood Pressure Monitor, along with other cuffed blood pressure monitors.
While Omron blood pressure monitors typically score high in CRs ratings, the PB8000-M one did not. In fact, it was the lowest of any model we tested. At $499, it was also the most expensive.
CRs testing has found that monitors with a cuff that you wear on your wrist are generally not as accurate as those with a cuff that you put on your upper arm. In our tests, the Heart Guide received a Poor score for accuracy, and our testers found it somewhat hard to use.
With wrist monitors, it is difficult to position them correctly for the most accurate reading, says Susan Booth, CRs test engineer in charge of blood pressure monitor testing.
Carol Lucarelli, Omron Healthcares director of marketing and e-commerce, told CR that the device is held to the same standards as all other blood pressure monitors in our portfolio and that many customers report that using the monitor has helped them make taking their blood pressure a regular habit. As a wearable, it is essential that the size, fit, and placement be correct for accuracy, she said. She also encouraged anyone having challenges with fit to contact Omron customer service.
