On average, drinkers consume 32.8 grams of pure alcohol per day, and beer is the most consumed alcoholic beverage . In the United States, 14 grams of pure alcohol is considered as one standard drink or one unit, and the maximum daily limit for men and women is four and three drinks, respectively . Exceeding this limit increases the risk of cardiovascular, hepatic, and nervous system disorders . Also, multiple studies have found associations between consumption of alcoholic beverages and specific cancers . Abuse of alcohol resulted in approximately 3 million deaths worldwide and 132.6 million disabilityadjusted life years in 2016 .
Despite the potential negative effects of alcohol consumption, systematic reviews based on cohort studies show that light to moderate consumption of alcohol has a cardioprotective effect and may decrease mortality in adult men and women .

As a result, peripheral resistance and blood volume are increased, leading to elevated arterial blood.
Several clinical trials in humans and studies conducted in animal models have reported stimulation of the sympathetic nervous system and increased noradrenaline after consumption of alcohol . When noradrenaline stimulates the adrenergic receptors located in the heart muscles, heart rate and blood pressure are increased.
Another possible mechanism is the increase in plasma cortisol levels following heavy alcohol consumption . Several studies have suggested a role for cortisol in alcoholinduced hypertension . Cortisol is a type of steroid hormone, and the presence of excess cortisol has been associated with elevated blood pressure in normotensive individuals .

Three glasses of red wine a week can help lower blood pressure, a study has found.
A higher intake of foods rich in flavonoids â including berries, apples, tea and red wineâ has been linked to lower blood pressure in analysis by Queenâs University in Belfast and Kiel University in Germany.
Moderation is key, with researchers finding that about three glasses of red wine per week was optimal, while for berries the suggested amount was 80g a day.
The study focused on how microbes in the gut break down flavonoids found in those foods and drinks, which then results in a drop in blood pressure.
âOur gut microbiome plays a key role in metabolising flavonoids to enhance their cardioprotective effects, and this study provides evidence to suggest these blood pressure-lowering effects are achievable with simple changes to the daily diet,â said lead investigator Professor Aedin Cassidy.
The analysis involved more than 900 participants in Germany.
Previous research has shown flavonoids can improve heart health, but researchers said this was the first time their connection to lower blood pressure has been explained.
The studyâs results have been published in Hypertension, an American Heart Association journal.

Blood Pressure Heart Rate Climb
Compared with the men who did not drink any alcohol, the red wine drinkers had a nearly a 2.5 point jump in their systolic blood pressure. Beer drinkers’ blood pressure rose nearly two points.
Systolic blood pressure is the top number of a blood pressure reading. It measures the pressure in blood vessels when the heart pumps.
While this doesn’t sound like much, even a few points can make a difference in people who have borderline or high blood pressure. Ideally, blood pressure should be less than 120/80. Blood pressure between 120/80 and 140/90 is called prehypertension.prehypertension.
Heart rate also rose. The researchers tested heart rate during sleep to rule out any effect of activity. Red wine drinkers’ heart rate climbed five points for eight to 10 hours after drinking. Beer drinkers’ heart rate rose four points.
Removing alcohol from the red wine did not lower the blood pressure.
The researchers say that the blood pressure effects of red wine and beer appear to be similar.
Since the men in the study did not have high blood pressure, it’s unclear how these findings apply to people who do. The study appears in the new issue of Hypertension: Journal of the American Heart Association.
So how is alcohol good for your heart if it raises blood pressure? It’s a delicate balance, say researchers.
One drink equals a 5 ounce glass of wine, a 12 ounce beer, or 1 ounce of liquor.
