If the systolic pressure exceeds 180 or the diastolic pressure is less than 120, you should be concerned. In case of not having a blood pressure monitor, you should wait for a specialist. Reduce Your Sodium Intake

Itâs a prime offender in raising blood pressure. The American Heart Association recommends that people with hypertension keep it under 1,500 milligrams a day. Check your food labels to see how much youâre getting. If you cut back gradually, youâre less likely to notice the difference. Limiting sodium to just 2,400 milligrams per day can lower your number 2 to 8 points.

One way to cut back is to prepare your food at home. Seventy-five percent of your sodium intake comes from eating out and packaged foods. Use more spices for flavor instead of salt. Eating more potassium helps move sodium out of your body. A small effort can bring blood pressure down as much as two to eight points.

Ways to cut out sneaky salt and add healthy flavor:

  • Read labels. Look for “salt,” “sodium,” “sea salt,” and “kosher salt.”
  • Rinse salty canned food such as beans or tuna before using it.
  • Substitute herbs and spices for sodium and salt when cooking.
  • Avoid instant or flavored side dishes, which usually have a lot of added sodium. Instead, try cooking plain rice, pasta, or grains without adding salt. You can add other flavorings or a bit of salt when you serve them.
  • Look for “low sodium” on food labels.

Physical Activity And Sports

How much activity is needed to lower my blood pressure?

Dr Michael Mosley On How To Keep Your Blood Pressure Down

This Christmas, I asked my wife for a blood pressure monitor. Its not the most romantic of presents, but it certainly beats socks.

I have a family history of heart disease, and I am aware that people with high blood pressure rarely have symptoms. So unless you are tested, you probably wont know you have a problem until you have a heart attack or stroke. And new research suggests that long-term damage is happening to your brain, even when blood pressure is only slightly above what would be considered normal.

In a study published in November 2020 in the European Heart Journal, researchers at the University of Oxford looked at MRI brain scans of 37,041 people whod had their blood pressure measured around 10 years earlier. The researchers found that even mildly elevated blood pressure levels, below the usual treatment threshold, were linked to damage to the small blood vessels in the brain.

An ideal healthy systolic blood pressure is between 90 and 120mmHg, so what can you do if your blood pressure is slightly too high? Well, losing a bit of weight, exercising more and stopping smoking will all help, but so can consuming certain foods or at least that is what we discovered on Trust Me, Im A Doctor, when we did a small experiment with Dr Andy Webb at Kings College, London, a few years ago.

For the second and third week, each group swapped over so that after three weeks everyone had eaten their fill of each food.
