Importance Of Daily Monitoring
High blood pressure can trigger a number of heart and circulatory complications, especially in individuals with diabetes, high cholesterol levels and other lifestyle diseases. As blood pressure abnormalities cause very few symptoms, they often go undetected. The only way to detect blood pressure problems is to have it measured using a blood pressure monitor.
Since the blood pressure readings can vary throughout the day, doctors now recommend that you take several readings in a day. With the latest Omron blood pressure monitor, you can easily measure and record multiple readings in the comfort of your home. Taking home blood pressure readings can help your physician get a better picture of your condition and the success of the prescribed treatments.
Should I Buy A Used Blood Pressure Monitor

To check how accurate your monitor is, you can take it to your doctors office and see how it compares with their results.

Who Needs A Blood Pressure Monitor
Anyone can benefit from tracking and keeping an eye on their blood pressure. Those with high blood pressure should monitor changes in their readings and check whether medication and/or lifestyle changes are helping. Those with prehypertension can use a blood pressure monitor to verify whether the condition is improving or worsening. Since anxiety can have an effect on blood pressure readings taken in a doctors office, some people may benefit from taking readings at home for a more accurate picture of their health.
Buying Guide For Best Wrist Blood Pressure Monitors
The ability to quickly and efficiently gauge blood pressure is useful for those with specific ailments like heart conditions or hypertension. Whether your doctor has requested that you take your blood pressure regularly or youre taking a proactive approach to your own well-being, its vital to choose the right unit and use it correctly in order to receive accurate readings. A wrist blood pressure monitor can be a valuable tool for monitoring your health.
While wrist monitors can be less accurate than blood pressure monitors worn around the bicep, they are more accessible and easy to use. These types of blood pressure monitors utilize battery power to take automatic readings and minimize user error.
Our buying guide below covers the pros and cons of using this type of blood pressure monitor, along with information on model pricing and tips for improving accuracy. Weve included a few of our favorites, too.

How To Use Omron Blood Pressure Monitor
- Before wrapping the cuff on your arm, make sure that it is assembled properly. If not, pass the end of the cuff through the metal D-ring and form a loop in such a way that the smooth side is on the inside and the rough hook material is on the outside of the cuff.
- After a five-minute rest, put your arm through the cuff loop, wrap it around the center of your upper arm and pull the end of the cuff till it fits snugly before pressing the sewn hook surface firmly on the side of the cuff.
- Ensure that the cuff is not too tight on your arm. Ideally, you should be able to insert your index finger between the cuff and your arm without any difficulty.
- Be still and relaxed throughout the testing so that you get accurate blood pressure readings.
- If you are using a semi-automatic blood pressure monitor, squeeze the inflation bulb until the cuff inflates until the monitor acknowledges the right amount of pressure.
- In fully automatic monitors, all you need to do is to put on the cuff and press the start button. The monitor will automatically handle the inflation and deflation of the cuff and display the blood pressure reading on the screen.
- Take multiple readings with a five-minute interval between them, until you get a consistent value because various factors like movement or talking can cause considerable fluctuations in the blood pressure values in each reading. Record each reading into the in-built memory of the monitor and print them on paper for your doctor to peruse.
Arm And Cuff Position
Now that you have your body in the proper position and the cuff on your wrist, start your 5 minutes of quiet time. Once youre relaxed, the wrist and arm position are the next step. Just like with an upper arm cuff, its extremely important to have the wrist cuff at the height of your heart 5.
There are two ways to accomplish this. The first is to rest your elbow on the table surface in front of you. Then bend your elbow raising the cuff up to the same height as your heart. Most decent monitors have a heart height sensor which will let you know when the cuff is at the correct height.
Please read your monitor manual for the specific instructions on this for your particular monitor.
The Omron wrist monitor I recommend, requires the distance from the top of your seat to the top of the table to be between 10 to 14 apart. If the distance doesnt fall into the range, they say to turn off the sensor and determine the height yourself.
In addition, the size of persons torso may make the sensor inaccurate. If either one of these are the situation for you, follow the second technique.
The second technique involves stopping the cuff at the height you determine where your heart is. You can keep your elbow in the same position as the first technique above.
Or you can slide it out to the side and position the cuff close to your chest to help determine the correct height. Once the cuff is at the correct height, keep it there for the measurement.

Lifesource: Best Cuff Size Options
Improved accuracy for larger arms
We like the LifeSource extra large cuff because it fits arms that are too big for every other BP monitor on our list . This is great for people with particularly muscular builds because they dont have to settle for less accurate readings from a wrist- or finger-type blood pressure monitor.
Stores fewer readings than other BPMs
One big miss on this blood pressure monitor is the memory storage. It stores only up to 60 readings, which is average compared to other monitors on the market. While this is acceptable on cheaper devices, its not great on a single-user device that costs over $100.
Ultimately, we think this is an excellent option if you dont fit the average arm circumference of most people.
If you have a slender build with thin arms, check out the LifeSource . The cuff on this BP monitor fits smaller arms .

Omron Platinum: Most Accurate Blood Pressure Monitor
*Amazon.com list price as of post date. Read full disclaimer
The Omron Platinum packs accuracy and storage into one powerful device. This blood pressure monitor comes with TruRead technology for clinically accurate results, and its mobile app can store unlimited readings from an equally endless number of users.
The Omron Platinum is also very accurate because it uses advanced averaging and TruRead technology. Advanced averaging gives an average result of your last three consecutive tests for more consistent results. TrueRead takes advanced averaging a step further by performing all three readings during the same session. Its not as fast as a regular test but helps provide precise results.
Mobile app has issues
There are two downsides to this Omron blood pressure monitor: the cuff and the mobile app. The cuff tends to be larger, so it might not be as accurate if you have small arms. But the mobile app is a bigger problem, with most user reviews citing poor performance and an inability to sync readings on their smartphones properly. Overall, we recommend the Omron Platinum more for its accurate readings than its mobile app.
Stores 100 readings per user
Even without the mobile app, the monitor tracks readings for two users, so another family member can use it. It has enough storage space for 200 readings . This high memory storage tracks your history longer to help your doctor know if your medication works properly.

How To Position A Wrist Blood Pressure Monitor
When using a wrist blood pressure monitor, proper position is key. A wrist blood pressure monitor needs to be positioned differently from an upper arm blood pressure monitor during measurement.
First, wrap the cuff 1/2 inch, or 1 cm, away from the beginning of your wrist . Second, when measuring, place the wrist cuff at the same level as your heart.
You can do this by crossing your arm across your chest, laying your wrist squarely on your heart, and supporting your elbow with the other hand.
When the forearm is laid horizontally on a supporting desk putting the wrist below heart level, or if the hand is grabbing onto a shoulder putting the wrist above heart level, an inaccurate BP measurement will occur.
Evolv Wireless Upper Arm Blood Pressure Monitor
This Omron blood pressure monitor is a one-piece unit. The cuff fits arms with a 917-in circumference, and the monitor sits on the upper arm.
The companys advanced accuracy heart health algorithm allows the device to measure and collect data without wires. It can store up to 200 readings for two different people.
Bluetooth connectivity sends data to a persons iOS or Android smart device, and the free Omron Connect app provides unlimited memory storage and tracking. The app also connects with Amazon Alexa-enabled devices.

What To Do If Your Reading Is Inaccurate
Sometimes youll get a BP measurement that just doesnt make sense. This is fairly common, especially when youre new to home blood pressure monitoring.
If you didnt get an accurate reading, dont immediately re-inflate the blood pressure cuff. Remove the cuff and give yourself at least one minute before reapplying the cuff and repeating the steps to measure your blood pressure.
The American Heart Association recommends taking your new home blood pressure monitor with you to your next doctors appointment.1 You can ask questions, and your doctor can make sure youre using the monitor correctly.
You can also verify that your home monitor gets the same results as the equipment in your doctors office. Its good practice to bring in your home monitor at least once a year to make sure readings are still accurate.

My Doctor Told Me I Have High Blood Pressure Can I Use My Fitbit Or Smartwatch To Monitor My Blood Pressure
While Fitbits and smartwatches are great for tracking general fitness data, like steps taken and pulse rate, they arent accurate or reliable enough for monitoring high blood pressure. In fact, most heart monitors for exercise only track your heart rate. They simply cant take the correct measurements.
The only proper way to take your blood pressure involves sitting down for at least a few minutes with both feet flat on the floor and your arm resting at heart level. For more recommendations for proper use, see the American Heart Associations recommendations for monitoring your blood pressure.
