Omron Platinum Upper Arm Blood Pressure Monitor

Best Data Storage: Microlife Watch Bp Home

Omron Platinum Blood Pressure Monitor, Premium Upper Arm Cuff, Digital Bluetooth Blood Pressure
  • Cuff fits easily and comfortably onto arm

  • Screen displays excessive data that may be confusing to user

  • Slight learning curve to understanding the device

If youre investing in a quality blood pressure monitor, youre likely going to want to get plenty of uses out of it. The Microlife Watch BP Home Blood Pressure Monitor stores up to 250 blood pressure readings, so you can track your vitals over time. The device is easy to set up and only requires plugging the cuff into the monitor itself. The cuff, which has instructions for use printed on the outside, stays put once positioned on your arm.

Once youve taken your reading, the monitor automatically stores the data and previous readings can be accessed by the M button on the machine. It offers a Diagnostic Mode for people whose doctors put them on a 7-day self-monitoring program, and can detect A-Fib.

Our testers said that the one downside to this machine is that it provides more information than necessary on its display. The screen shows the date, battery life, and various other icons that could be confusing to an inexperienced user, though it provides plenty of information for anyone who prefers that level of detail. We gave this device a point a four out of five for data display, but because it received five out of five in every other category, we gave the Microlife Watch BP a 4.5 out of five for overall value.

Omron Platinum: Most Accurate Blood Pressure Monitor

*Amazon.com list price as of post date. Read full disclaimer.

The Omron Platinum packs accuracy and storage into one powerful device. This blood pressure monitor comes with TruRead technology for clinically accurate results, and its mobile app can store unlimited pressure readings from an equally endless number of users.

Clinical accuracy

The Omron Platinum Bluetooth blood pressure monitor is also very accurate because it uses advanced averaging and TruRead technology. Advanced averaging gives an average result of your last three consecutive tests for more consistent results. TrueRead takes advanced averaging a step further by performing all three pressure readings during the same session. Its not as fast as a regular test but helps provide precise results.

Mobile app has issues

There are two downsides to this Omron blood pressure monitor: the cuff and the mobile app. The cuff tends to be larger, so it might not be as accurate if you have small arms. But the mobile app is a bigger problem, with most user reviews citing poor performance and an inability to sync readings on their smartphones properly. Overall, we recommend the Omron Platinum more for its accurate readings than its mobile app.

Stores 100 readings per user

If you want a cheaper unit from Omron, check out the Omron Silver , one of the highest-rated blood pressure monitors on the market. It isnt as accurate as the Omron Platinum, but it has a more comfortable cuff and still uses advanced averaging.

The Omron Connect App

The OMRON Connect app gives you a clear view of your heart health anytime, anywhere. By wirelessly syncing via Bluetooth, you can easily upload, store and view your heart history. It also lets you easily share blood pressure data with family or physicians. And it even keeps track of your weightso you can achieve your health goals.

Don’t Miss: How To Take Accurate Blood Pressure

S To Use A Digital Blood Pressure Monitor

Take an accurate in-home blood pressure reading using digital blood pressure monitors by following the steps below:

  • Get ready. Make sure youre comfortable and relaxed. Your bladder should be empty, as a full one can impact the reading. Avoid smoking, exercise, and caffeine before taking your blood pressure.
  • Sit down. A comfortable sitting position is also the best position for taking a blood pressure reading. Remove any clothing that is tight or bulky around the upper arm, or roll up your sleeve. Place both feet on the floor and rest your forearm comfortably on a table at heart level. Place your arm with the palm of your hand facing up.
  • Find your pulse. Locate the brachial artery by finding your pulse in the center of your elbow. Press your index and middle fingers lightly against the inside of your elbow. If you cant find it by feeling, use the upper arm cuff to locate your pulse.
  • Use the right size of cuff. For an accurate reading, you need a blood pressure arm cuff that fits correctly. The length of the cuff should equal at least 80% of the circumference of your upper arm.
  • Apply the blood pressure cuff. Wrap the cuff around your upper arm . The lower edge of the cuff should be about one inch above the pit of your elbow. The arm cuff should feel snug, but not tight.
  • Inflate the cuff. Press the start button if your digital monitor has automatic cuff inflation.
  • Systolic blood pressure should be on the left or the top of the screen.
  • I Bought A Blood Pressure Monitor But The Cuff Is Too Small Can I Buy A Bigger Cuff Or Do I Need To Buy A Whole New Blood Pressure Monitor

Most blood pressure monitors come with a one-size-fits-most cuff for upper arms measuring 9.016.5 inches. Getting a blood pressure cuff that fits right is critical for accurate readings.

If your upper arm measures more than 16.5 inches around, you should get a bigger cuff. You can usually purchase extra cuffs separately, and most are compatible with various blood pressure machines. Just make sure your tubing is the correct size to connect with your monitor.

High blood pressure is caused by a variety of factors, but it is a common problem that can be prevented or treated through lifestyle changes and medication. Contact your doctor if you are unsure of what is the best treatment for you.

How To Get An Accurate Reading

Omron 7 Series Blood Pressure Monitor Review

To get the most accurate reading possible, avoid things with the potential to raise your blood pressure, such as caffeine, smoking, and exercise, 30 minutes before taking your blood pressure. The American Medical Association also recommends using the bathroom first, indicating that a full bladder could elevate your reading up to 15 mmHg.

You should be seated with your back supported and no potential restrictions to blood flow, like crossed legs. Your arm should also be raised to heart level for proper measurement. Youll also want to take two or three readings in a row to ensure they are all similar.

Dr. Gerlis suggests you work with your primary care physician after purchasing a blood pressure monitor to ensure the cuff is properly placed in order to give accurate readings. Navya Mysore, MD, a primary care physician and medical director of One Medical in New York City, also recommends taking your monitor to your doctor once or twice a year to ensure it is still measuring your blood pressure accurately, as well as replacing your device every five years.

How We Reviewed Blood Pressure Monitors

We started our evaluation by looking over prices, user reviews, and doctor recommendations. Here are some things we considered when selecting blood pressure monitors for our list:

    • Simple interface: A user-friendly interface with large numbers and big buttons makes it easier to navigate the blood pressure monitor and understand the results.
    • Multiple users: A multiple-user feature tracks more than one persons blood pressure, so you can share the monitor with family members and skip the hassle of buying multiple devices.
    • Accurate readings: Accuracy is one of the most important things to look for in a blood pressure monitor. We chose only upper arm monitors for our list because they tend to have the best accuracy. Learn more about the different types of blood pressure monitors.
    • Memory storage: With high memory storage, you can log your blood pressure readings multiple times a day and over a long period to give your doctor a better picture of your health.
    • Advisor recommendations: We asked Sally Russell, MN, CMSRN, CNE, health expert, and educator, to review our selection and suggest one of her own.

    Lifesource: Best Cuff Size Options

    Improved accuracy for larger arms

We like the LifeSource extra large cuff because it fits arms that are too big for every other BP monitor on our list . This is great for people with particularly muscular builds because they dont have to settle for less accurate readings from a wrist blood pressure monitor or finger-type blood pressure monitor.

Stores fewer readings than other BPMs

One big miss on this blood pressure monitor is the memory storage. It stores only up to 60 readings, which is average compared to other monitors on the market. While this is acceptable on cheaper devices, its not great on a single-user device that costs over $100.

Ultimately, we think this is an excellent option if you dont fit the average arm circumference of most people.

If you have a slender build with thin arms, check out the LifeSource . The cuff on this BP monitor fits smaller arms .

What To Do If Your Reading Is Inaccurate

Buy Omron Platinum Blood Pressure Monitor, Premium Upper Arm Cuff ...

Sometimes youll get a BP measurement that just doesnt make sense. This is fairly common, especially when youre new to home blood pressure monitoring.

If you didnt get an accurate reading, dont immediately re-inflate the blood pressure cuff. Remove the cuff and give yourself at least one minute before reapplying the cuff and repeating the steps to measure your blood pressure.

The American Heart Association recommends taking your new home blood pressure monitor with you to your next doctors appointment.1 You can ask questions, and your doctor can make sure youre using the monitor correctly.

You can also verify that your home monitor gets the same results as the equipment in your doctors office. Its good practice to bring in your home monitor at least once a year to make sure readings are still accurate.

    Wrist Blood Pressure Monitors

A wrist blood pressure monitor includes a cuff that fits around the wrist. Wrist monitors tend to be smaller in size, but they are usually more comfortable for the wearer. However, a wrist monitor may not be as accurate as an arm monitor.

“The American Heart Association recommends the use of an upper arm BP monitor, as these monitors tend to be more accurate than wrist models. However, wrist monitors can be more comfortable than upper arm styles. If you experience discomfort with a traditional bicep cuff monitor, you may prefer a wrist monitor.”

    Types Of Blood Pressure Monitors

OMRON 10 Series Blood Pressure Monitor

There are three primary types of blood pressure monitors: upper arm, finger, and wrist. The American Heart Association only recommends upper arm blood pressure monitors as finger and wrist monitors are not considered as reliable or accurate. And Dr. Gerlis agrees, saying wrist monitors are not as reliable in my experience.

A 2020 study of wrist monitors found that 93% passed blood pressure monitor validation protocols and only had, on average, a difference of 0.5 mmHg in systolic pressure and 0.2 mmHg in diastolic blood pressure from a standard sphygmomanometer. While wrist monitors are becoming more accurate, the issue they present is that proper placement and setup is even more integral to accurate readings than with upper arm monitors. That makes them easier to misuse or to use and get an inaccurate measurement.

While wrist cuffs are largely discouraged in favor of arm cuffs, the American Medical Association announced last year that wrist devices would soon be validated on validatebp.org for patients that could not use their upper arms for blood pressure monitoring the list now includes four wrist devices with the disclaimer that upper arm cuffs are preferred. The next time we test blood pressure monitors, we will include more approved devices designed to take measurements on your wrist.

Our Pick: Greater Goods Blood Pressure Monitor + Kit 0602

    You save $11

If you dont need or want a Bluetooth monitor, the Greater Goods Blood Pressure Monitor + Kit 0602 has the same cuff, minimal noise levels, two-user maximum, irregular heartbeat detection, and dual-power options as its Bluetooth-enabled counterpart, with a slightly different display. Like the 0604, this blood pressure monitor is usable immediately out of the box, and switching between userswhile not as easy as with the 0604requires only a couple of button pushes.

Like the 0604, the 0602 runs quietly and displays results for about a minute after delivering your reading. Unlike the 0604, the 0602 is unable to average any measurements, though it can store up to 60 entries per user, if you want to calculate your averages manually. There is no way to export your readings via email, USB, Bluetooth, or any other meansyoull need to write them down or log them digitally on your own.

While the 0602 can work on either battery power or with an AC adapter, unless there are working batteries installed, it resets the date and time every time its unplugged. When this happens, previous readings stay in the machine, but its possible to jumble dates and times if a user is rushed and simply clicks through without properly selecting the month, year, day, hour, and minute.

When set up correctly, the 0602 requires two clicks to start, even when theres only one user on the device, versus the 0604s single click.
