At that point, the clinician will hear a steady thump that indicatessystolic pressure.

As the pressure in the cuff continues falling, blood flows more easily past the cuff, and the thumping grows fainter. Once the cuff pressure drops below the pressure in the artery during the resting phase between heartbeats, the thumping sound disappears. This indicatesdiastolic pressure.
