Who Should Follow Risk Reduction Recommendations

How to Take Blood Pressure Blood Pressure Cuff Placement

The goal is to reduce your risk of developing lymphedema. Having a mastectomy alone does not put you at risk for lymphedema. The risk comes when you have lymph nodes removed or damaged. If you had any of the following, you should take precautions to reduce your risk of lymphedema:

  • Removal of all lymph nodes in the underarm area, which is called an axillary node dissection .
  • Removal of a limited number of key lymph nodes from the underarm area, which is called sentinel lymph node biopsy .
  • Having radiation to the chest wall and armpit after surgery.

If you have had any of these procedures, you would benefit from meeting with a lymphedema therapist to learn about precautions to reduce your risk of developing lymphedema and when to notify your medical providers.

PRIMO MEDICAL SUPPLIES: Why do you need a Blood Pressure ...

Digital blood pressure machines are nearly as accurate as air-driven ones. If you are using a digital blood pressure device, follow these instructions. Note that a digital blood pressure device should be checked for accuracy every 6 months, comparing results with your doctor’s mercury-driven machine.

    1. Apply the blood pressure cuff snugly onto your upper arm about one inch above the crease in the bend of your arm. Velcro closure may be released and reset to tighten cuff as needed.
    2. Sit quietly with your arm straight, palm up and your elbow resting in a relaxed position on the table. Your upper arm should be about the same level as your heart.
    3. Turn on the machine by pressing the “ON” button. Wait for the blinking heart to appear in the read-out screen, then press the “START” button.
    4. The cuff will tighten, then slowly release. In less than 60 seconds, your digital blood pressure reading will appear in the read-out screen.
    5. Your pulse rate will also appear in the read-out screen.
    6. Record reading as outlined in steps 5 and 6 above.

Are Digital Blood Pressure Monitors Accurate

All Omron blood pressure monitors are clinically proven accurate. They are clinically validated to be within the following:

    • Blood pressure: within +/- 3 mgHg or 2 percent
    • Pulse: within +/- 5 percent of reading.

This meets or exceeds the AAMI standards. To understand the accuracy levels of other manufacturers blood pressure monitors, you need to contact them. It is always important to investigate accuracy and ease of use before purchasing a home blood pressure monitor.

Maintaining a healthy blood pressure is key to staying healthy. Therefore, monitoring yours on a regular basis can be a life-saver, according to Joyce M. Oen-Hsiao, MD, director of the cardiac rehabilitation program and medical director of the cardiac telemetry unit at the Yale New Haven Hospitals Heart and Vascular Center. Long-standing high blood pressure can cause damage to the small vessels in your body and also cause the heart to thicken and stiffen, she explains. Checking your blood pressure can help you and your doctor figure out if you need medications or that your medications are working.”

Choosing A Home Blood Pressure Monitor

The American Heart Association recommends an automatic, cuff-style, bicep monitor.

    • Wrist and finger monitors are not recommended because they yield less reliable readings.
    • Choose a monitor that has been validated. If you are unsure, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice or find options at
    • When selecting a blood pressure monitor for a senior, pregnant woman or child, make sure it is validated for these conditions.
    • Make sure the cuff fits measure around your upper arm and choose a monitor that comes with the correct size cuff.

Check The Cuff For Correct Sizing

The Welch Allyn cuff has an arrow on it labeled index. Many people think the arrow is supposed to point down your arm towards your hand, but its not. The index arrow is supposed to point up towards your shoulder.

The purpose of it is to check the size of the cuff and make sure its the correct size for your arm. The Welch Allyn cuff has a size range indicator line. If the cuff is the correct size, when its tightened and secured, the arrow will point somewhere on the line.

If the cuff is too small or big, the arrow will point somewhere before or after the size indicator line. If you need a different size cuff, luckily Welch Allyn has the widest size range cuffs available for the 1700 series.

The extra large cuff fits arms up to 21.25 They also have a small cuff which fits upper arms from 5.75 to 9.5 They can both be ordered on Amazon here, 1700 series cuffs.

What Your Blood Pressure Reading Means

Blood pressure readings include two numbers. The top number is called the systolic blood pressure and it changes with every heartbeat, says Dr. Del Conde. When the heart contracts and pumps extra blood into the circulatory system, the pressure increases. This increased pressure corresponds to the top number, or the systolic blood pressure.

The bottom number is called the diastolic blood pressure. When the heart is at rest and not contracting, the pressure that exists within the system is called the diastolic pressure, says Dr. Del Conde.

    Lining Up The Artery Marker

    Blood Pressure Measurement

The artery marker symbol on the Welch Allyn blood pressure cuff is labeled artery. The symbol is a small circle with a straight line drawn through the middle of the circle. The line through the circle should line up with the brachial artery on the upper arm.

The brachial artery runs down the inner part of your upper arm facing towards the side of the torso. It then crosses over the bend off your arm towards the top of the forearm. The brachial artery is what the nurse most often uses when drawing blood from your arm.

The reason why the artery marker needs to line up with the brachial artery is how the artery gets compressed. When the BP cuff inflates, it squeezes the upper arm and stops the flow of blood through the artery.

To cut off the blood flow efficiently, the middle of the air bladder inside the cuff should be as close to the brachial artery as possible. The artery marker helps accomplish that task.

Are The Readings Different Between An Upper Arm Blood Pressure Monitor And A Wrist Blood Pressure Monitor

It is quite possible that your readings may be different from your upper arm to your wrist as blood pressure varies throughout the human body. All Omron blood pressure monitors, whether upper arm or wrist, are validated in the same manner and have the same accuracy specifications. In terms of which type of blood pressure monitor is best for you, we recommend that you discuss this with your doctor, based on your individual needs.

    Youve Placed The Cuff Incorrectly

The standard for blood pressure cuff placement is the upper arm using a cuff on bare skin with a stethoscope placed at the elbow fold over the brachial artery.

The patient should be sitting, with the arm supported at mid heart level, legs uncrossed, and not talking. Measurements can be made at other locations such as the wrist, fingers, feet, and calves but will produce varied readings depending on distance from the heart.

The mean pressure, interestingly, varies little between the aorta and peripheral arteries, while the systolic pressure increases and the diastolic decreases in the more distal vessels.

Crossing the legs increases systolic blood pressure by 2 to 8 mm Hg. About 20 percent of the population has differences of more than 10 mmHg pressure between the right and left arms. In cases where significant differences are observed, treatment decisions should be based on the higher of the two pressures.

What Are The Common Causes Of Getting Blood Pressure Readings That Are Inaccurate

It is quite normal for peoples blood pressure to change throughout the day and night, or in different settings where you may take your blood pressure. Many things, such as stress levels, food or drink intake, activity levels, even time of day can all affect a persons blood pressure reading at any given time. So, it is possible that you may just be seeing normal fluctuations in blood pressure.

However, below are some common situations that can lead to inconsistent or inaccurate readings:

Using the wrong cuff size for your arm

Just because the cuff may fit around your arm does not mean it is the right size cuff for you. The correct cuff size is directly related to the circumference of your arm. To get accurate readings, it is important that you are using the correct sized arm cuff. To determine your arm size, use a cloth tape measure and place midway between your elbow and your shoulder around the circumference of your upper arm. Wrap the tape measure evenly around your arm. Do not pull the tape tight. Note the precise measurement in inches. Select an Omron home blood pressure monitor with the right size of cuff included, or if you already have the monitor, and need a different sized cuff, contact our consumer support line at -216-1333, and they can assist you to purchase the right size accessory cuff for your unit.

Now that weve gotten the background information out of the way, its time to get started!

    • Sit with your back straight, your legs uncrossed, and your feet flat on the floor.
    • Place the cuff on your left arm or wrist .
    • For upper arm monitors, wrap the cuff around the middle of your bare upper arm, about ½ above the elbow. It should be fastened snugly, but you should be able to slide two fingers underneath the cuff. Place the air hose on the inside of the arm near the crook of your elbow so that the artery position mark is aligned with your brachial artery.
    • For wrist monitors, with the palm facing upwards, attach the monitor to the inside of your wrist. Fasten securely with the top edge of the cuff aligned with the crease of your wrist.
  • Rest your arm on a table so cuff is at heart level.
  • For upper arm monitors, the cuff around your upper arm should be even with your heart. Your hand should rest on the table, palm up.
  • For wrist monitors, youll need to bend your elbow to bring your wrist to heart level. Positioning your wrist at heart level is critical for an accurate measurement.
  • Press start. During your measurement, do not talk, move, or eat. Any one of these things can impact your measurement.
  • Thats all there is to it!

How To Apply The Cuff Correctly

    Upper arm blood pressure monitor

CHECK.1Apply the cuff to bare skin or light innerwear

Wrap the cuff snuggly around the arm, on bare skin or light innerwear, making sure the cuff is securely in place. Remove heavy clothes such as a sweater before measurement, instead of rolling up the sleeves.

CHECK.2Make the air tube run down the inside of your arm

Adjust the position of the air tube so that it runs down the inside of your arm and is positioned at the center of your arm.

    CHECK.3Cuff wrapping position

Position the cuff about 1-2cm above the bend of your elbow.Make sure that the cuff does not cover the joint region.

    Wrist blood pressure monitor

Wrap the wrist cuff securely around your wrist. Do not apply the cuff over clothing.

CHECK.2Wrap the cuff around whichever wrist is easier to apply to

The cuff may be wrapped around either the right or left wrist. However, because measurement values vary between the right and left wrists, make sure to always measure on the same side.

    CHECK.3Cuff wrapping position

Position the cuff leaving a clearance of about 1-1.5cm between the cuff and the bottom of your palm. Make sure the wrist cuff does not cover the wrist bone.

Youre Not Factoring In Electronic Units Correctly

Electronic blood pressure units also called Non Invasive Blood Pressure machines, sense air pressure changes in the cuff caused by blood flowing through the BP cuff extremity. Sensors estimate the Mean Arterial Pressure and the patients pulse rate. Software in the machine uses these two values to calculate the systolic and diastolic BP.

To assure accuracy from electronic units, it is important to verify the displayed pulse with an actual patient pulse. Differences of more than 10 percent will seriously alter the units calculations and produce incorrect systolic and diastolic values on the display screen.

Given that MAP is the only pressure actually measured by an NIBP, and since MAP varies little throughout the body, it makes sense to use this number for treatment decisions.

A normal adult MAP ranges from 70 to 105 mmHg. As the organ most sensitive to pressure, the kidneys typically require an MAP above 60 to stay alive, and sustain irreversible damage beyond 20 minutes below that in most adults. Because individual requirements vary, most clinicians consider a MAP of 70 as a reasonable lower limit for their adult patients.

Finally, and especially in the critical care transport environment, providers will encounter patients with significant variations between NIBP and arterial line measured blood pressure values.

What Is The Difference Between The Comfit Cuff And The D

The ComFit cuff is pre-formed to wrap easily around your upper arm. It features 360º around the circumference of your arm to help reduce measurement errors and ensure inflation over your brachial artery. The D-Ring cuff is a soft contoured cuff that is designed for more comfortable measurement. This style is typically seen in a doctors office. You loop one end of the cuff through the D-shaped metal ring, put your arm through the cuff and then fasten the end around the arm. Both cuffs fit a standard- to large-sized adult arm. 9 to 17 in circumference.

When purchasing an at-home blood pressure monitor, it is important to know your proper cuff size. To determine your arm size, use a cloth measuring tape and measure the circumference of your left upper arm midway between your elbow and shoulder. The blood pressure cuff must be neither too tight nor too loose to help ensure accurate readings, providing you with an accurate picture of your hearts health.
