Healthfda Expands Blood Pressure Drug Recall Again

When should you take your blood pressure medicine?

Previous studies had hinted that better blood pressure control at night might offer a benefit.

“This was the piece that was missing,” Dr. Renato Lopes, a professor of medicine at Duke University School of Medicine, said.

“For the first time in a very large, randomized fashion, this study really gave us impressive results,” said Lopes, who was not involved in the new research.

While the results are encouraging, researchers say patients with high blood pressure should speak with their doctors before making any changes to their blood pressure medication routines.

“It is important to understand that this may not apply to medications that need to be taken more than once a day, or for blood pressure medications that are being prescribed for other problems such as angina,” Dr. Tim Chico, professor of cardiovascular medicine at the University of Sheffield in the U.K., said in a statement.

And there are other caveats.

The new research had participants take all of their blood pressure medications at once, either at night or in the morning, rather some in the morning or some at night. But some cardiologists say many patients may need a more tailored approach.

“For most people, a combination of a couple medicines in the morning and a couple in the evening means you’re going to do better, eliminate side effects and generally have better control of your blood pressureover 24 hours,” Laffin said.

If you have high blood pressure, remembering to take your medication is so important.

In fact, the time of day when you take your medicine could influence your risk for complications such as heart attack and stroke, which is ultimately related to how well you manage your blood pressure.

The bodys natural rhythm, known as the circadian rhythm also affects how we respond to specific medications, the result of a complex interplay between your medication and cortisol, the chief hormone responsible for this rhythm.

Now, a new study recommends that you take your blood pressure medicine at bedtimeto lower your blood pressure during the night and early morninghelping to prevent elevation of blood pressure that normally occurs as you awaken.

The research was published earlier this week in the European Heart Journal.

There is a growing body of evidence which indicates that not only genetics, but the time of day you take a medicine may influence how effective it is for treating a particular condition.

The current study looking at this phenomenon represents the largest study to date of patients with high blood pressure, and included more than 19,000 persons on medications to treat high blood pressure.

The key here is routines, said Bhusri. An even routine has shown that patients are more compliant with taking their medications more regularly and not forgetting.

Can Lisinopril Interact With Grapefruit

No, lisinopril doesnt interact with grapefruit.

Depending on the condition youre using lisinopril to treat, other drugs you take with lisinopril may interact with grapefruit. For example, after a heart attack, most people are also prescribed a statin, which is a medication that lowers your cholesterol. Some statins interact with grapefruit. Your doctor or pharmacist can check for any interactions between the statin youre prescribed and grapefruit.

If you have other questions about whether grapefruit interacts with any medications you take, talk with your doctor or pharmacist.

What Did This Study Do

The Hygia Chronotherapy randomised controlled trial was conducted across 40 general practices in Northern Spain as part of a larger project looking at ambulatory blood pressure measurement. Over 10 years, 19,168 adults taking one or more anti-hypertensive medications were randomised to take them in the morning or at night.

Average patient age was 61 years, 56% were male, 43% had obesity, 24% type 2 diabetes, 29% chronic kidney disease, and 10% had previously had a cardiovascular event.

In total, 53% were taking angiotensin receptor blockers , 25% ACE inhibitors, 33% calcium channel blockers, 22% beta-blockers and 47% diuretics. ARBs or ACE inhibitors were the most common single therapies, with the addition of a diuretic or calcium channel blocker the most common dual combinations.

Patients were followed up by clinical assessments and 48-hour ambulatory blood pressure monitoring at least annually. The outcome assessors were unaware of group allocation.

The Best Time of Day to Take Your Blood Pressure Medicine

By Alan Mozes HealthDay Reporter

WEDNESDAY, Oct. 23, 2019 — Taking blood pressure medications at bedtime rather than in the morning nearly halves the risk of dying from a heart attack, stroke or heart failure, a large, new study finds.

Researchers in Spain followed more than 19,000 adults with high blood pressure. They found that people who took all their blood pressure meds at night had lower blood pressure around the clock compared to volunteers who took their medication in the morning.

“The findings are highly consistent regardless of sex, age, presence of diabetes or kidney disease, and other major known factors of increased risk,” said study lead author Ramon Hermida.

Hermida is director of bioengineering and chronobiology at the University of Vigo’s Atlantic Research Center for Information and Communication Technologies.

“Conventionally, most patients ingest their medication in the morning,” said Hermida, “although no single trial ever documented this to be preferable.” No guidelines are currently in place regarding the best time to take the drugs, he added.

A New York City heart doctor believes consistency in taking your blood pressure pills will deliver optimal protection.

“The key here is routines,” said Dr. Satjit Bhusri, a cardiologist at Lenox Hill Hospital. “Not missing a dose. We know one thing worse than an elevated blood pressure is swings in blood pressure due to periodic non-compliance.”

When Is The Best Time To Take Lisinopril Morning Or Night

Question posted by DT62 on 25 Feb 2016

Last updated on 15 May 2018 by 1 maddad

I was taking the Lisinopril 10mg in the morning and cholesterol medicine at night. That’s the only meds I take besides a low dose aspirin. The pharmacist recommended taking my bp medicine at night, but my doctor at the time said I could take it either time. Some of the articles I’ve read say taking it at night may lower my bp too much if I’m a ” dipper”, some said it depends on the medication. I’m not sure what to do.

When Is Blood Pressure Highest

Blood pressure rises and falls in a fairly predictable pattern. When you wake up in the morning, it surges. It then increases throughout the day. At night, during sleep, it tends to drop again.

However, this isnt always the case for people with high blood pressure. In fact, there are four distinct patterns of nighttime blood pressure shifts.

They are:

  • A normal drop in blood pressure of 10% to 20%
  • Extreme dipping, which is a drop of more than 20%
  • Non-dipping, which is a drop of less than 10%
  • Reverse dipping, in which blood pressure is higher during sleep than during waking hours

All three types of abnormal dips in blood pressure are associated with various health risks. They can affect the arteries and heart, kidneys, blood sugar levels, and more.

The only way to know how your blood pressure changes is to measure it regularly at different times across the day and night. One way to do this is with ambulatory blood pressure monitoring .

This technique involves wearing a blood pressure cuff like the one your healthcare provider uses in their office. The cuff is linked to a small monitor that can be attached to a belt or an item of clothing. The device automatically takes your blood pressure every 15 or 30 minutes. You use it for a specified period of time, usually 24 or 48 hours.

ABPM measures blood pressure during sleep as well as during waking hours. For this reason, it can be a useful way to find out what kind of dip, if any, someone tends to have at night.
