If you experience ED and think that it may be a result of the medication you are using, do not stop taking the medication. If the problem persists, contact your doctor and he or she may be able to prescribe a different medication. Common medications that may list ED as a potential side effect include:

  • Diuretics .

  • Ed Prevalence And Impact Around The World

ED prevalence was surprisingly high at the end of the classic Massachusetts Male Aging Study reaching almost 40% among men at theirs 6th decade of life. Those numbers were similar in more recent publications over the world and also in developing countries , projecting the assumption that over 30 million American citizens suffer from some level of sexual dysfunction .

Prevalence’s numbers vary according to characteristics of the population studied and the method used to access erectile function. Some trials have used a single question about sexual satisfaction while others have adopted validated questionnaires like International Index of Erectile Function that could check all five major domains of sexuality: sexual desire, erectile function, orgasmic function, intercourse satisfaction, and overall satisfaction with sexual life .

Besides this high prevalence, before oral therapy with phosphodiesterase-5 inhibitors, less than 1/4 of men with ED search for medical help . The most frequent reasons for such passiveness were belief that lack of complete erection was part of a normal aging, sexual inactivity caused by widowhood, lack of perception of ED as a medical disorder, ashamed to talk with a doctor about sexuality, lack of an effective treatment for most cases. Probably the real impact of ED was even greater with a strong relationship with aging and some authors estimated that almost half of 70-year-old men live with some degree of ED .

High Blood Pressure And Your Blood Flow

When your blood flows naturally, you can have healthy erections. Natural arousal leads to increased blood flow to your penis causing an erection. This process becomes more difficult with high blood pressure. In this case, the blood vessels narrow, slowing its natural flow. Not only does hypertension raise your risk of a stroke or heart attack, it also complicates erections. At this point getting or maintaining erections may become a challenge this is ED.

How To Cure Erectile Dysfunction By High Blood Pressure Meds

If you have high blood pressure, the best thing you can do is talk to your healthcare provider about how you can safely and sustainably reduce it. Your healthcare provider might recommend making changes to your lifestyle, or they may recommend using high blood pressure medications. Some treatment options for blood pressure are diuretics, beta-blockers, alpha-blockers and ACE inhibitors, according to an article published by the International Journal of Hypertension. Beta blockers obstruct the effects of adrenaline, the hormone that triggers your body’s fight-or-flight response when you’re stressed, which slows your heart rate. Alpha-blockers prevent a hormone called norepinephrine from tightening the muscles in the walls of smaller arteries and veins, which improves blood flow. Angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors are heart disease medications that widen your blood vessels and increase the amount of blood your heart pumps.

Often, high blood pressure is caused by several factors at once. Below, weve listed some of the most effective steps you can take to naturally lower your blood pressure and reduce your risk of experiencing blood pressure-induced ED:

    Ed And Cardiovascular Risk

Several traditional risk factors were related to ED in medical literature with some evidences coming from well designed epidemiological trials. Age seems to be the clearest risk factor with strong association with the presence and severity of ED . After adjusting for age, the correlation between ED and modifiable risk factorshypertension, diabetes, hyperlipidemia, obesity, sedentary, and smokingremained significant . The increase of ED’s prevalence with aging is followed by atherosclerotic lesions in vascular tree . Most men with hypothetic vasculogenic ED present at least one traditional cardiovascular risk factor . These evidences allowed the consideration of ED as a clinical manifestation of a functional or structural abnormality in penile circulation as component of a systemic vasculopathy .

Erection is a complex psiconeurovascular process and involves several system interactions that converge to an increase in hypogastrian-penian blood flow and subsequent activation of veno-occlusive mechanism of corpus cavernosum . It is well known that the blood increment towards cavernous tissues necessary for a rigid erection is huge and even small hemodynamic disturbances could produce sexual dysfunction . So, traditional risk factors such as hypertension, diabetes, and hyperlipidemia could contribute for ED development or worsening even in situations where psychological etiology seems more likely.

    Working With Your Doctor

Your doctor will need a lot of information from you before suggesting any treatment. If this doctor had been involved in your care for high blood pressure, you can talk about how well you’ve been controlling your blood pressure and about how youâre doing with the medications you’re taking. If youâre meeting with a new doctor, youâll share all that, plus information about other health problems you may have, like diabetes or high cholesterol.

The doctor may discuss any of your risk factors for heart disease before recommending treatment, as well as any side effects you could be having from medications.Telling a doctor that you have difficulty with your erection isnât the easiest thing to do. But to get the right care, you have to tell your doctor everything, including the truth about things like drinking alcohol, using drugs, or smoking cigarettes. It’s in your best interest to be totally honest.

You should also be prepared to discuss some questions about your sex life. They might ask things like:

    • What’s your sexual orientation? Do you have sex with men, women, or both?
    • Do you have a steady partner? Multiple partners?
    • How is sex with your partner? Has anything changed recently?
    • Has anything upsetting happened to you lately?
    • In general, are you under a lot of stress?
    • Do you ever feel depressed?

A doctor youâre seeing for the first time may also need to examine your penis, testicles, and prostate gland. Some men also have their testosterone level tested.

High Blood Pressure And Blood Flow

Normal, unobstructed blood flow is the key to sexual health. When you feel aroused, your body increases the level of blood flow to tissue inside the penis, filling the corpora cavernosa and giving you an erection.

High blood pressure can make this more difficult by damaging blood vessels. Hypertension is closely linked to narrowed, ruptured or otherwise damaged blood vessels — an issue that can negatively affect blood flow and even potentially increase your risk of having a stroke or heart attack.

Damaged blood vessels possibly caused by hypertension result in weaker, less consistent blood flow throughout your body — a condition that makes developing an erection much more difficult.

When there isnt enough blood flow to fill the corpora cavernosa, you might have trouble with getting and maintaining an erection. Sometimes, high blood pressure might not produce total ED — instead, you might notice slightly weaker erections that are harder to maintain.

If Your Medicine Causes Erectile Dysfunction

Tell your doctor if you think blood pressure medicine may be causing erectile dysfunction.

If it is medication, and not just high blood pressure, switching to another prescription may solve the problem. Never stop taking medicine without your doctor’s OK.

But high blood pressure itself still could be to blame for your erectile dysfunction. In that case, ask about trying an erectile dysfunction drug like Cialis, Levitra, Stendra, Staxyn, or Viagra.

You should only take these drugs once your high blood pressure is under control. They are not safe for men with untreated high blood pressure. They are also not safe for men taking alpha-blockers, or men taking nitrate drugs for heart disease.

The most likely reason that these blood pressure medications cause ED is related to this process.

They may lower blood pressure and inhibit the process required for an erection.

Researchers had discovered the relationship between beta blockers and erectile dysfunction before todays study.

The study starts out with a lie:

The use of beta-blockers led to a decrease in the frequency of sexual intercourse compared with the angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitor lisinopril or the angiotensin receptor antagonist valsartan. However, to date, studies comparing the effects of different beta-blockers on erectile function are lacking.

The truth is that lisinopril also causes erectile dysfunction.

Ive had countless men tell me so.

And there are certainly studies about it.
