What Is High Blood Pressure
A blood pressure reading, such as 120/80, includes systolic and diastolic pressure readings. While a normal blood pressure reading is 120/80 or lower, a high systolic reading is cause for concern. Prehypertension occurs when the systolic reading is between 130 and 139, and the diastolic reading is between 80 and 89. Numbers higher than these indicate high blood pressure, or hypertension.
Causes: Hypertension is often a symptom of an underlying condition. Your risk for high blood pressure increases if you are a smoker or heavy drinker, older than 60, overweight, sedentary, or experiencing chronic stress.High blood pressure may also be the result of a poor diet that includes high amounts of sodium. Certain health conditions also cause high blood pressure . Some medications may also have an adverse effect on blood pressure. Genetics play a large part in determining your risk factors for high blood pressure, so a family history of the condition increases your risk, too.
Which Arm To Take Blood Pressure
Left or right? There is no correct general answer to this question. Knowing which arm to use is different for everyone. At an initial doctor visit, they should take your blood pressure in each arm and record both.
Whichever arm has the higher blood pressure should be the arm used for each subsequent reading .
In addition, taking blood pressure in each arm can diagnose a more serious medical condition like peripheral artery disease and aortic dissection. A difference of 10 mm Hg or less between arms is typical and usually not a concern.
If there is a larger difference between arms, there may be a medical condition like PAD.
A 69 year old women was misdiagnosed because the medical staff failed to check BP in both arms. This resulted in a whole series of unfortunate events and medication. Arm Position For Wrist Blood Pressure Monitor
The first step for correct arm position is placing your elbow on a flat surface. There are a few steps you must perform prior to this step for your measurements to be accurate. Many of them are the same as if you were using an upper arm monitor.
- First sit down in an upright chair similar to a dining room chair. Do not use one that angles back or a soft cushiony couch.
- Your back should be supported against the upright part of the chair.
- Keep your legs uncrossed and feet flat on the floor. Crossed legs have been shown in studies to increase blood pressure by as mush as 7 mmHg 2.

After setting your body and wrist cuff into position, place your elbow on a flat surface. The surface should be level like the top of a table or desk. Youll position your chair close enough to the flat surface or table so you dont have to lean forward.
Next, raise your wrist by bending your elbow until the cuff has reached heart level 3. Heart level is approximately the midpoint of your sternum. This is half way from where your collar bones meet near the bottom of your neck to where the bottom of your ribcage curves up and meets together.
Now you can begin your measurement. Make sure you keep your wrist and hand relaxed. In addition, dont bend them backward or forward.

How To Use A Wrist Blood Pressure Cuff
Blood pressure measurements are important, so avoiding errors are crucial. Using a wrist blood pressure cuff can complicate matters. The differences in technique between a wrist cuff and upper arm cuff can produce false readings if not performed properly. Because of this, a question I get asked from many is, how to use a wrist blood pressure cuff?
How to use a wrist blood pressure cuff:
- Sit upright in a chair with feet flat on the floor and back supported.
- Place the wrist cuff around the bare wrist.
- Position the monitor on the inside of the wrist.
- Adjust the wrist cuff, so its snug with no space between the cuff and wrist.
- The end of the cuff should be approximately 1/2 to 1 inch from the wrist crease at the bottom of the palm.
- The wrist cuff should not cover the wrist bone protrusion on the outside of the wrist.
- Comfortably rest the elbow on a flat surface and raise the wrist to heart level.
- Keep the wrist and hand relaxed.
- Do not bend the wrist backward or forward.
- Begin the measurement.

Blood Pressure Cuff Size
When it comes to blood pressure cuffs, size does matter. The wrong size cuff can cause your readings to be either too high or low. Most home monitors and cuffs have an arm size range on the cuff.
Some home monitors come with one size range cuff and others may give you a choice of cuffs. If your arm size changes, some monitor cuffs can be changed to a different size .
Before you purchase a home monitor, make sure you know what cuff size youre getting. The home monitor I use and recommend comes with a standard cuff size that fits most people. It measures between 8.75 and 16.5.
The best way to measure your upper arm is with a cloth measuring tape. Keep your arm relaxed, supported or hanging straight down. Wrap the measuring tape around the middle of your upper arm and make sure it is even all the way around.
Make a note of your measurement and make sure it falls within the range of the cuff youre buying.
