    Beetroot ‘can Lower Blood Pressure’

    Drinking a cup of beetroot juice can lower blood pressure, researchers say.

    Drinking 250ml cut high blood pressure readings by 10mm of mercury in a study of 15 patients, bringing some into the normal range, the journal Hypertension reports.

    Most marked after three to six hours, the effect was detectable a day later.

    Scientists say the nitrate in beetroot widens blood vessels to aid flow. And many people with angina use a nitrate drug to ease their symptoms.

    And they warn there could be one unexpected consequence of drinking beetroot juice – it can turn your urine pink.

    Researcher Dr Amrita Ahluwalia said: “We were surprised by how little nitrate was needed to see such a large effect.

    “Our hope is that increasing one’s intake of vegetables with a high dietary nitrate content, such as green leafy vegetables or beetroot, might be a lifestyle approach that one could easily employ to improve cardiovascular health.”

    Prof Peter Weissberg, medical director at the British Heart Foundation, which funded the research, said: “It supports current advice that we should all be eating plenty of green veg.

    How Nitrates May Lower Blood Pressure

    In the study, 14 healthy volunteers drank 500 milliliters of Planet Organic beet juice or water within 30 minutes. The researchers checked the participants’ blood pressure every 15 minutes one hour before they drank the juice and every 15 minutes three hours after drinking the beet juice. They also checked every hour to six hours and then at 24 hours after they drank the beet juice.

    Compared with the water drinkers, blood pressure dropped one hour after the volunteers drank the beet juice. It reached its lowest point 2.5 to 3 hours after ingestion and continued to have an effect for up to 24 hours.

    Here’s how it works: Nitrate in the beet juice is converted by bacteria living on the tongue into the chemical nitrite. Once it enters the stomach, it becomes nitric oxide or re-enters the blood stream as nitrite. The researchers found that blood pressure was at its lowest when the nitrite levels in the blood were at their highest.

    The nitrites, the researchers write, work by protecting against endothelial dysfunction, which means that blood vessels have trouble expanding or contracting to handle changes in blood flow. They also have anti-platelet properties.

    The study is published in the Feb. 4 online edition of the journal Hypertension.

    It is well known that eating fruits and vegetables is good for cardiovascular health, said Amrita Ahluwalia, PhD, the lead author of the study and a professor of vascular biology at The Barts and The London Medical School in London. However, vegetables that are rich in compounds call nitrates, including beets and their juice, may offer special benefits for people with elevated blood pressure, she said.

    In the body, nitrates from food are converted into nitrites and ultimately nitric oxide. This gas expands blood vessels, which improves blood flow and lowers blood pressure. Nitric oxide has the opposite effect of stress or cold temperatures, which cause blood vessels to constrict, thus raising blood pressure temporarily.

    The beet drink decreased participants blood pressure by approximately 10 millimeters of mercury , with the greatest drop occurring 3 to 6 hours after they consumed the juice.

    Nitric oxide can also help keep arteries free and clear and prevent blood clotting, Dr. Bryan added.
