Which Allergy Drugs Are Ok With High Blood Pressure

I’ve got high blood pressure, am I okay taking cough medicines?

11 Fast Facts About Your Child’s Allergies I Have High Blood Pressure. Are Allergy Drugs OK? First things first: Always check with your doctor or pharmacist before you start to take any medication — for allergies , high blood pressure , or anything else. That’s true for herbs and supplements , too. Antihistamines are the most common medication for allergies . Most of them seem to be safe if you have high blood pressure — but again, ask to make sure. Don’t take decongestants unless your doctor tells you otherwise. They may raise your blood pressure . They also keep some high blood pressure drugs from working the way they should. Watch out for combination medications for allergies that include decongestant ingredients. That includes allergy drugs as well as many remedies for cold, flu , and sinus problems. Ask your pharmacist to check the ingredients for you. WebMD Medical Reference Reviewed by Suzanne R. Tips For Choosing Suitable Medications

When at the pharmacy, a person should look for medications that do not contain decongestants or NSAIDs other than aspirin. A person should read the product label carefully and look at the active ingredients list. This is where drug manufacturers typically list the drugs and their effects.

A person should also avoid medications that are high in sodium. These ingredients can also increase a persons blood pressure.

Some medications, such as NSAIDs, have warning labels on the packaging. The warning is about how the medication may increase a persons blood pressure. People with hypertension or heart disease should avoid any medications that have this label.

Finally, if a person is not sure, they can ask the pharmacist or their doctor. They should mention any conditions they have, such as hypertension or heart disease, as well as any medications they are taking. The pharmacist or doctor will then outline which medications are safe for the person to take.

Why Is There A Warning About Heart Disease High Blood Pressure Or Diabetes

Contac® Cold + Flu advises patients suffering from heart disease, high blood pressure and/or diabetes to consult with their doctor before using Contac. Decongestants in cold medicines decrease the size of enlarged blood vessels in nasal passages, but they can also affect blood vessels in the rest of your body and raise blood pressure. For most people, this increase isnât significant. However, some people can have exaggerated responses to decongestants, contributing to dangerously high blood pressures. As stated on the label, check with your doctor before using Contac Cold + Flu if you have liver disease, heart disease, thyroid disease, diabetes, glaucoma, high blood pressure, trouble urinating due to an enlarged prostate gland , or a breathing problem such as emphysema or chronic bronchitis. Don’t Rely On Supplements

While a diet rich in potassium and possibly calcium can help control blood pressure, it’s unclear if supplements have the same effect. And some recent research suggests that too much calcium from supplements might increase the risk of heart disease and other health problems.

As for potassium, the form in supplements might not have the same effect as the kind in foods. And too much of it, even from food, can cause problems for people with heart failure or kidney disease, and for those who take certain blood pressure drugs, including ACE inhibitors, angiotensin receptor blockers, and potassium-sparing diuretics such as spironolactone . So talk with a doctor before increasing your intake.

If you take diuretics, your doctor may prescribe a potassium supplement, because those medicines can lower potassium levels.

How Ace Inhibitors Trigger Cough

Coricidin HBP Cough & Cold Symptom Relief High Blood ...

ACE inhibitors block the angiotensin-converting enzyme, which converts angiotensin I to angiotensin IIa peptide hormone that causes vasoconstriction, or narrowing of the blood vessels. By blocking this necessary step in the renin-angiotensin system, ACE inhibitors lower blood pressure.

While researchers don’t fully understand why ACE inhibitors cause some people to develop a cough, the generally accepted mechanism is as follows:

  • Bradykinin is a peptide that acts as a vasodilator, meaning that it widens blood vessels. Bradykinin normally has a short half-life, and it is degraded by the angiotensin-converting enzyme.
  • Bradykinin’s activity and concentration can increase when a person takes an ACE inhibitor. Excess bradykinin can accumulate in the upper and lower respiratory tracts and trigger a cough.
  • Bradykinins also stimulate prostaglandins, compounds involved in the immune response, which may increase inflammation in the area and result in coughing.

It’s impossible to predict when an ACE inhibitor-related cough will develop. It can begin hours after the first dose, or after taking the drug for months.

Take The Right Medicines

If a healthy diet and lifestyle changes alone don’t lower your blood pressure enough, or if your levels are very high to begin with, you should consider medication. The drugs used to treat high blood pressure are effective and relatively safe, and most are available as low-cost generics. But they can cause side effects, as listed in the table below.

Many doctors will recommend initial treatment with a group of drugs called thiazide diuretics, sometimes known as “water pills.” Studies have consistently shown these drugs work for most people who take them, have been used for more than 50 years, are inexpensive, and have a very good safety record. In addition, they outperform all other types of high blood pressure drugs in reducing the risk of death from heart failure.

Still, many doctors routinely prescribe other blood pressure medicines, including newer, more expensive ones. In addition to thiazide diuretics, the guidelines this report is based on recommend three types of drugs for potential initial treatment, or if a second drug is needed to lower your blood pressure. They are: calcium channel blockers angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors and angiotensin receptor blockers .

What Do The Numbers Mean

Blood pressure is the force exerted by blood against the walls of your arteries as it flows through your body. It is measured as two numbers, one over the otherfor example, 120 over 80. The measurement is in millimeters of mercury, expressed as mmHg. The systolic number is the pressure in the arteries when the heart contracts. The diastolic number is the pressure when the heart rests between contractions. An elevation in either or both of those numbers signals high blood pressure. See chart below for more details.

Importantly, even if your blood pressure is not elevated enough to be considered high, the risk of a heart attack or stroke increases as pressure rises above normal.

Weight Loss Drugs Can Also Raise Blood Pressure

Treating a Cold with High Blood Pressure

Some weight loss drugs may make heart disease worse. Appetite suppressants tend to “rev” up the body, increasing both the heart rate and the blood pressure. When the blood pressure rises, it can put more stress on your heart.

Before using any weight loss drug, whether prescription or over-the-counter, be sure to check with your doctor. These medications may do you more harm than good.

The governments Office of National Statistics released figures indicating that deaths could be at least 10 percent higher than the official toll 12,107 as of Tuesday which does not take into account many people who die in nursing homes or at home. More than 2,000 nursing homes, about 13 percent of the countrys total, have had coronavirus cases, said Dr. Chris Whitty, the governments chief medical adviser. Workers in many of the homes have complained of an acute shortage of protective gear. Care England, a charity representing independent care agencies, has estimated that nearly 1,000 Covid-19 deaths in nursing homes have gone uncounted. Two major home operators have reported 521 deaths in recent days, many of which are not yet included in official totals.

The mechanism that causes the calcium to be deposited has been difficult to unpick, but now scientists say they have the answer: it is triggered by a molecule, called poly or PAR, that is produced when the cells, or the DNA inside them, are damaged. That, they say, makes sense: ageing, high blood pressure, smoking and fatty plaques are risk factors for stiffening of the arteries, and are linked to damage to cells, or even their DNA.

Who Should Not Take Otc Cough And Cold Medicines

People with certain medical conditions should talk to their healthcare provider before taking OTC cough or cold medicines. Examples include high blood pressure, irregular heartbeat, or liver disease. Decongestants, antihistamines, and medicines high in sodium can raise blood pressure. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, ask your healthcare provider if you can take these medicines.

Besides pseudoephedrine, cold and allergy sufferers with hypertension should be wary of:

  • Afrin nasal spray
  • Multi-symptom cold products with NSAIDs

If you take prescription medications that increase your blood pressure, such as Adderall or albuterol inhalers, the oxymetazoline in Afrin can also increase your blood pressure through a combined effect.

NSAIDs cause the body to retain fluid and may affect kidney function, which may increase blood pressure.

Fortunately, if you have high blood pressure, there are safer alternatives when cold and allergy season come around.

Evolving Treatment For High Blood Pressure

The findings presented today reflect a growing trend in U.S. healthcare that emphasizes greater importance on maintaining a healthy blood pressure range.

New scientific guidelines presented last year identified high blood pressure readings as 130/80. High blood pressure was previously defined as 140/90.

That announcement made waves, as it suddenly put 46 percent of U.S. adults in the high blood pressure category.

The treatment of hypertension, or high blood pressure, has evolved, Yancy said. New evidence makes clear that we can reduce the risk of stroke and death due to heart disease by carefully controlling blood pressure in those at higher heart disease risk.

For people with high blood pressure, theres a range of other approved medications available that may be safer and more effective than alpha-blockers and alpha-2 agonists.

Both Yancy and Clements point out that those medications include:

  • thiazide diuretics
  • ACE inhibitors
  • calcium channel blockers
  • angiotensin II receptor blockers

These therapies are all safe and effective, said Yancy.

Everyone should know their blood pressure. If it is 130/80 mm Hg, see a healthcare provider to determine your risk for heart disease and the best approach to address your blood pressure, he said.

But medications arent the only answer for people with high blood pressure.

One may also ask, what Nasal Spray Can you use with high blood pressure? Phenylephrine is the only other oral nasal decongestant known to be safe and effective for nonprescription use. It carries the same warnings as pseudoephedrine. Research on its ability to raise blood pressure is not as extensive as that on pseudoephedrine, but some data can be obtained.

Furthermore, can I take Robitussin DM with high blood pressure?

Yes, it’s fine for you to take Mucinex DM if you have high blood pressure. These medicines are not known to elevate blood pressure. The combination of dextromethorphan and guaifenesin is used to treat cough and chest congestion caused by the common cold, infections, or allergies.

Does coughing make your blood pressure high?

Dry Cough Caused By Lisinopril And Other Ace Inhibitors

Zestril and other angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors are often used for treating hypertension. Lisinopril and drugs in the same classCapoten and Vasotec , for examplecan have side effects. One notable side effect is an annoying, persistent, dry cough.

The incidence of ACE inhibitor-induced cough ranges from about 5% to 35%. If you develop a cough while taking one of these medications, it’s important to know when to speak to your healthcare provider about itand when switching to another type of medication may be advised.

Cough Associated With Blood Pressure Medicine More Common In Diabetics

Sept. 24, 1999 — A type of blood pressure medication that has been shown to help prevent the kidney damage associated with type 2 diabetes may cause an annoying, hacking, dry cough in as many as 15% of diabetics who take it, according to a survey done by a team of Italian researchers. The survey findings are reported in the September issue of Diabetes Care.

The medication, called an ACE inhibitor, includes such drugs as Vasotec , Capoten , and Prinivil . ACE inhibitors have been shown to be the most effective medication for controlling blood pressure in diabetics. High blood pressure and type 2 diabetes often occur hand-in-hand, and the combination can damage the kidneys, eventually causing kidney failure.

In the survey, Pier Luigi Malini, MD, associate professor of medical therapeutics at the University of Bologna, tells WebMD that of the diabetic patients who reported the cough, only about 5% asked to be taken off the drug because of it. None of the patients involved in the study were aware that Malini’s team was investigating cough.

Malini tells WebMD that one very intriguing finding was that the 5% who did stop taking the medication because of the cough were among the few patients who knew it was a side effect.

The same researchers presenting the current findings previously found that just 7.4% of patients without diabetes who were taking an ACE inhibitor developed the drug-induced cough.

Migraine Headache Drugs And Blood Pressure

Cold Medicine for High Blood Pressure | Vicks

Some migraine headache drugs work by tightening blood vessels in your head. This relieves migraine pain. However, the medication also constricts blood vessels throughout your body. This can make blood pressure rise, perhaps to dangerous levels.

If you have high blood pressure or any other type of heart disease, talk with your doctor before taking medication for migraines or severe headaches.

Is Your Cold Medicine Safe For High Blood Pressure

When you feel that first funny tickle in your throat or cough one too many times, you may be tempted to run out and buy the first over-the-counter medicine that promises fast relief. However, if youre the 1 in 1 in 3 American adults living with high blood pressure, its important to exercise extra caution.

Many cold and flu remedies can actually do you more harm than good by raising your blood pressure or conflicting with blood pressure medications.

Stay well this winter by learning the types of cold and flu medicines to steer clear of and some safer alternatives.

One of the major symptoms of a cold is sinus congestion and decongestants are usually the go-to remedy of choice. Decongestants thin the blood vessels in the nose, relieving the stuffiness. Other blood vessels throughout the body may be affected as well.

With high blood pressure there is already increased pressure on the blood vessels, and narrowing the vessels more increases the risk of raising blood pressure. Decongestants may also prevent high blood pressure medications from working properly.

NSAIDs

Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs are pain relievers and are taken to relieve the aches pains that often come along with a cold or the flu. Most cold and flu medications contain NSAIDs, but these may cause your body to retain fluid and increase your blood pressure due to decreased kidney function.
