Ibuprofen May Raise Heart Risk More Than Other Nsaids

Can Ibuprofen raise your blood pressure?

A big study published in 2016, called the PRECISION trial, found that people with arthritis who take the anti-inflammatory drug ibuprofen are more likely to develop cardiovascular problems than those using celecoxib and now researchers think they know why. Ibuprofen raises blood pressure, according to new findings presented recently at the annual meeting of the European Society of Cardiology in Barcelona.

These findings were based on the results of a sub-study of the PRECISION trial, called PRECISION-ABPM. Both studies looked at patients at risk of heart disease who took one of three common pain relievers for arthritis: celecoxib , ibuprofen or naproxen . All three of the medications belong to a class called nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs buprofen and naproxen are so-called nonselective NSAIDs, whereas celecoxib is a selective COX-2 inhibitor.

These drugs are among the most commonly prescribed worldwide in the United States, about 30 million people with osteoarthritis take them, 40 percent of whom already have high blood pressure.

Its well established that all NSAIDs, including about a dozen not analyzed in the PRECISION studies, increase the risk of heart attack and stroke, especially in people over 65 with a history of heart disease. In 2015, the Food and Drug Administration warned that the risks of NSAIDs were greater than originally thought and required manufacturers to put a warning on the label. But it wasnt clear if some NSAIDs were riskier than others.

What Does Ibuprofen Do To The Body

NSAIDs, like ibuprofen, relieve pain and inflammation of substances in our body called prostaglandins.

Prostaglandins play several important roles in our bodies. Theyre most known for helping to create pain, fever, or inflammation when were injured or sick. But prostaglandins also affect the widening and narrowing of our blood vessels, the protection of our stomach lining, and blood clotting.

By blocking the effects of prostaglandins, ibuprofen helps relieve pain, fever, and inflammation. But because prostaglandins have other functions, ibuprofen can cause a number of side effects. This includes raising blood pressure.

There is too much sodium in our food supply, we are not getting enough physical activity, we are gaining too much weight, and we are drinking too much alcohol, and every single one of those things contributes to increasing blood pressure levels, Lloyd-Jones says.

To stay on top of your blood pressure, take your measurements often and understand where you are on the spectrum, Lloyd-Jones says. You can do this at home with a cuff-style biceps monitor. If you notice your blood pressure is starting to increase or if its already elevated , its important to be careful around the foods and habits that can make it worse, Lloyd-Jones adds. Its also important to work with a doctor to find the best way to control it, be it with medications, lifestyle changes or both.

Home blood pressure monitoring is a really important and empowering way for patients to take control of this, Lloyd-Jones says.

One of the very few things that we know about is that those who smoke and are prone to chest pains will be more likely to have those pains after smoking. This is almost certainly due to a number of interlocking factors that really do need significantly more research done, but unfortunately, much of that research is still in its infancy due to restrictive federal laws surrounding marijuana possession.

While ibuprofen has a low risk of liver damage, you should avoid it if you have liver cirrhosis . People with liver cirrhosis have a higher risk of bleeding when taking NSAIDs.

NSAIDs, like ibuprofen, also interfere with platelets abilities to stop bleeding. Platelets are a blood cell that help keep bleeding in check. So if you have a history of thrombocytopenia when you have low platelets in your blood ibuprofen may raise your risk of bleeding.

How Does Naproxen Sodium Affect High Blood Pressure

It is a common misconception that medications available over the counter are safe for anyone to take. Individuals with hypertension should be aware that these readily available medications can have an impact on the control of their disease. Naproxen sodium is an oral medication that is part of a larger family of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, or NSAIDs. Naproxen and other NSAIDs are associated with several different types of side effects, but pertinent to this discussion is the impact on blood pressure control.

Do All Versions Of Ibuprofen Impact Blood Pressure

How Medications Like Ibuprofen Can Affect Your Blood Pressure

Ibuprofen comes in different forms and is found in many medications. There are no studies comparing the impact of the different versions of ibuprofen on blood pressure. But since all those medications contain ibuprofen, they most likely also affect blood pressure.

Options For People With High Blood Pressure

If you have high blood pressure or heart conditions and would like to take pain control medications, discuss your options with your doctor beforehand. Most experts agree that acetaminophen and aspirin are the safest pain relief choices for people with high blood pressure. However, not everyone should use aspirin. Ask your doctor if aspirin is safe for you if you take medications for high blood pressure. Aspirin may also cause ulcers, heartburn, and upset stomach, and it can be dangerous to take if you have gout, liver disease, rheumatic fever, or if used in children. Pregnant women also should not take aspirin as it can be unsafe for both mother and baby.

High Blood Pressure And Drug Safety

Ibuprofen Raises Blood Pressure For How Long

To make sure your medication for high blood pressure is working effectively, avoid certain other drugs because:

  • Some medicines can make blood pressure rise. If you have high blood pressure to begin with, it can rise to dangerous levels.
  • Some medications may interact with your blood pressure medicine. This can prevent either drug from working properly.

Here are common types of drugs that can make your high blood pressure worse.

Is It Safe To Take Ibuprofen If I Have Hypertension

Studies have shown that ibuprofen raises blood pressure for people with hypertension. This may also be true for people taking blood pressure medications. In studies, these blood pressure changes are usually small. But they do happen.

Because of this, some experts recommend that people with hypertension avoid taking NSAIDs. People with heart failure and CKD, including CKD caused by diabetes, also have a higher risk of experiencing blood pressure changes after taking NSAIDs.

If you have high blood pressure, its safer to check with your healthcare provider first before taking ibuprofen. They may prefer you take a different medication.

So Which Painkiller Is Best If You Have High Blood Pressure

If you have high blood pressure and a painful condition such as osteoarthritis, which requires regular non-steroidal anti-inflammatory painkiller, whatever you do, avoid taking ibuprofen. Talk to your doctor about whether or not another type of painkiller might suit you better.

Bear in mind that pain, in itself, can raise blood pressure, so it is important to find a safe way to control your symptoms. A topical pain-relieving cream or gel is worth trying, for example. The amount of diclofenac absorbed through the skin when using a Voltarol gel is a drop in the ocean compared to the amount absorbed into the circulation when taken by mouth. Having said that, read the Voltarol Emulgel Patient Information Leaflet within the pack carefully, as applying the gel to multiple sites is not recommended, and the area covered is usually just the zie from 1 penny to a 2 pence piece! If you overuse Voltarol Gel, your blood pressure could well go up so monitor it carefully. Paracetamol is also effective for some people, but not for others.

Whenever you start a new medicine its vitally important to monitor your blood pressure regularly to see if your hypertensive control changes.

If your blood pressure is raised, self-monitoring is key to maintaining good control.

The day before I was due to go on a holiday warning signs became evident andI had to go to accident and emergency where I was seen by a doctor who said various tests would have to be carried out. I was told no flying.

My blood pressure was 190/60. I had an E.C.G., ECHO CARDIOGRAM AND CAROTID SCAN. ALL CLEAR. It was down to NADIDs, however a 24hr heart monitor picked up abnormal beats. I was diagnosed with atrial fibrillation and I am now on anticoagulants.

I will never return to that group of drugs.

Many people may not realizer that their NSAID has led to an increase in blood pressure.

Most NSAIDs can raise blood pressure to different degrees. That said, naproxen affects blood pressure less than ibuprofen. But it still shares other similar side effects with ibuprofen like kidney damage and stomach bleeding. Make sure to ask your pharmacist or healthcare provider if its OK for you to take any NSAIDs if you have high blood pressure.

What Happens When Ibuprofen Side Effects Include Hypertension

Many health professionals may not link a patients elevated blood pressure to their use of an NSAID. Yet ibuprofen side effects include hypertension, irregular heart rhythms , congestive heart failure, indigestion, perforated ulcers, kidney damage, kidney disease, liver damage and allergic reactions.

It would be a shame to start taking blood pressure medicine to counteract ibuprofen side effects. The person who asked the question at the top of the page may want to consider a different way to dealing with kneed pain.

Nsaids Still A Threat

Do the study results mean its safe to take celecoxib for arthritis? Not necessarily. Although the patients in the PRECISION studies took daily doses of NSAIDs, some doctors think the drugs should only be used short-term, on an as-needed basis or not at all.

Peter Wilson, MD, a professor of medicine and public health at Emory University who served on the FDAs expert panel on NSAIDs, says the drugs may be useful for short-term relief for younger people with no history of heart disease.

According to Vladimir Kramskiy, MD, a neurologist and director of the Ambulatory Recuperative Pain Medicine Program at Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City, NSAIDs should only be used when they are needed most for example, first thing in the morning or after exercise to avoid serious gastrointestinal, cardiac and renal side effects.

Other doctors argue that there are better options. Many, like Geoffrey Westrich, MD, research director of Adult Reconstruction and Joint Replacement Service, also at Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City, think exercise and maintaining a healthy weight are among the best treatments for arthritis pain.

In the midst of cold and flu season, you may wonder what medications are safe to take without greatly impacting blood glucose levels when you have diabetes. Overall, it’s the sickness that increases blood glucose in people with diabetes, not the medication used to treat it. However, some medications should be used with caution. Stacey O’Donnell, R.N., B.S., C.D.E., nurse manager, at Joslin Diabetes Center, goes over different types of medications and how they could impact your diabetes. Examples: Tylenol, Aspirin Effect on diabetes: No effect. Use cautiously if you have renal disease. Anti-inflammatory Examples: Ibuprofen, such as Advil, Motrin, Nuprin Effect on diabetes: No effect.
