Men who took such drugs for most days in a week were about one-third more likely to be diagnosed with high blood pressure than men not taking them, the researchers found.

Their findings, published in the Archives of Internal Medicine, reinforce a study published in 2002 that these commonly used drugs raise blood pressure in women.

This is a potentially preventable cause of high blood pressure, Dr. John Forman of Brigham and Womens Hospital in Boston, who led the study, said in a statement.

Millions of people take the painkillers as pills every day to treat headaches, arthritis, muscle pulls and other aches and pains.

These are the three most commonly used drugs in the United States, Dr. Gary Curhan, who also worked on the study, said in a telephone interview.

Men who took acetaminophen , sold generically and under the Tylenol brand name, six or seven days a week were 34 percent more likely to be diagnosed with high blood pressure than men who did not take analgesics.

Although ibuprofen isnt considered a blood thinner, it carries a risk of serious bleeding. This risk is usually low. But there are some people who should be more cautious when taking NSAIDs.

While ibuprofen has a low risk of liver damage, you should avoid it if you have liver cirrhosis . People with liver cirrhosis have a higher risk of bleeding when taking NSAIDs.

NSAIDs, like ibuprofen, also interfere with platelets abilities to stop bleeding. Platelets are a blood cell that help keep bleeding in check. So if you have a history of thrombocytopenia when you have low platelets in your blood ibuprofen may raise your risk of bleeding.

Effects Of Nonsteroidal Antiinflammatory Drugs In Conventional Dosage On Glucose Homeostasis In Patients With Diabetes

How High Is Too High For Blood Pressure? Cardiologist Explains

Effects of nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drugs in conventional dosage on glucose homeostasis in patients with diabetes. Larger-than-conventional doses of nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drugs are known to lower plasma glucose levels. This phenomenon has raised thequestions whether or not NSAIDs in conventional dosage can be used for thetreatment of hyperglycemia in patients who have non-insulin-dependent diabetesmellitus and whether or not NSAIDs added to preexistent hypoglycemic drug therapytaken orally may lead to unanticipated hypoglycemia. In this study we evaluatedaspirin, sodium salicylate and ibuprofen given in conventional dosage tohyperglycemic patients with adult-onset diabetes. Half the patientswere usually treated for hyperglycemia by means of diet only and half with dietplus hypoglycemic drugs given orally. Significant changes in plasma glucoselevels were not seen after the administration of a combination drug containingaspirin and magnesium-aluminum hydroxide or sodium salicylate . Astatistically significant but small change was seen with the administration ofibuprofen but not when giving ibuprofen . The results of this study indicate thatconventional doses of NSAIDs should not be used for treating hyperglycemia andthat, since the additive hypoglycemic effect of NSAIDs in conventional doses was minimal or negligible, they can be used safely for other purposes in diabeticpatients taking hypoglycemic drugs orally.Continue reading > >

Aspirin And Nonselective Nsaids

Two meta-analyses evaluated aspirin trials that included data on blood pressure.1,2 Aspirin dosages were greater than 1.5 g per day. There was no statistically significant effect on blood pressure. In a trial of 18,700 patients with hypertension, participants were randomized to receive aspirin or placebo for a mean of 3.8 years.3 There was no effect on blood pressure. There were significant reductions in rates of myocardial infarction among participants who were also receiving angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors .

A systematic review identified 32 randomized controlled trials that included 3,626 patients who were treated for at least four weeks with nonselective NSAIDs.4 Patients were monitored for changes in blood pressure and rates of hypertension during treatment. Most studies enrolled patients with osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis, although some included patients with other conditions. Patients who received ibuprofen had a greater incidence of new hypertension compared with those in the control group .

This Is When To Be Cautious About Taking Ibuprofen

The American Society of Health-System Pharmacists recommends talking to your doctor before taking ibuprofen if you smoke, if you have high cholesterol or diabetes, or if you or anyone in your family has ever had heart disease, a heart attack, or a stroke. You’ll also want to talk to your doctor if you currently have high blood pressure , as ibuprofen can exacerbate the problem. You should immediately get emergency medical care if you develop chest pain, slurred speech, shortness of breath, or weakness in one part of the body. Furthermore, ASHP warns against taking ibuprofen immediately before or after coronary artery bypass graft surgery.

When you do take ibuprofen, you should check the bottle and take no more than the recommended amount. A 2018 study published in Pharmacoepidemiology & Drug Safety found that 11% of regular ibuprofen users take too much of the drug, putting themselves at risk of serious side effects.

If you decide against taking ibuprofen for the sake of your blood pressure, you may be happy to learn that aspirin does not share this side effect .
