Other Ways Viagra Benefits The Heart And Blood Flow

Does Viagra Lower Blood Pressure Or Raise It? | Blood Pressure

In addition to pulmonary arterial hypertension and Reynauds syndrome, researchers are continuing to discover ways that Viagra improves blood flow and benefits the heart.

Heat Attacks

Researchers at Virginia Commonwealth University found Viagra helped to restore blood flow and tissue healing after a heart attack . They also found Viagra stopped Apoptosis, a condition where heart muscle cells kill themselves in the wake of a heart attack.

Preeclampsia

Preeclampsia is a condition that pregnant women develop and is marked by high blood pressure. It can lead to serious, sometimes fatal complications for the mother or baby. In 2005, a University of Vermont College of Medicine Team found Viagra prevented deaths among fetuses in pregnant rats. It did this by relaxing muscles in the artery walls allowing adequate blood flow.

Another study in 2016 using rats, concluded that sildenafil citrate improved blood flow to the fetoplacental unit despite lowering maternal blood pressure. Their findings provided preclinical evidence to support the hypothesis that sildenafil is a therapeutic target for the treatment of preeclampsia.

Infertility

Viagra showed that it could increase a womans chances of becoming pregnant. This happened when the cause of infertility is the lining of the uterus being too thin to sustain a pregnancy. Tests showed that sildenafil citrate increased blood flow to the uterus and stimulated the growth of cells .

What Men Should Know About High Blood Pressure And Viagra

High blood pressure is a known cause of erectile dysfunction and 80 are considered high). Erection problems are also a common side effect of many drugs, including those used to treat high blood pressure. The first choice for treating erectile dysfunction is usually a class of drugs with an active ingredient called PDE5 inhibitors. These medications block the enzyme that prevents relaxation of smooth muscles in the penis. By allowing the smooth muscles to relax, sildenafil and other PDE5 inhibitors make it physically possible for a man to achieve an erection in the presence of sexual arousal. However, there are several side effects of Viagra, many of which affect the cardiovascular system. Does Viagra lower blood pressure? Viagra Blunts Effects Of Stress On The Human Heart

Johns Hopkins MedicineOctober 24, 2005

VIAGRA BLUNTS EFFECTS OF STRESS ON THE HUMAN HEART

Sildenafil citrate , a drug used to treat erectile dysfunction in millions of men, reduces the stimulatory effects of hormonal stress on the heart by half, according to results of a new study by researchers at Johns Hopkins. While sildenafil is more widely known for helping genital blood vessels expand to maintain an erection and, more recently, as a treatment for pulmonary hypertension, it has been thought to have little direct effect on the human heart.

In the heart, sildenafil blunts the strengthened heartbeat caused by chemically induced stress, thereby lessening the excess amount of blood and force used to pump it to the body, according to study senior author and cardiologist David Kass, M.D., a professor at The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and its Heart Institute.

Sildenafil effectively puts a brake on chemical stimulation of the heart, says Kass.

The researchers findings, which appear in the journal Circulation online Oct. 24, are believed to be the first confirmation in humans that sildenafil has a direct effect on the heart. Previous research by Kass and his team showed that sildenafil had such effects in mice, blocking the short-term effects of hormonal stress in the heart. Related studies by the group also showed that sildenafil prevents and reverses the long-term effects in the heart from chronic high blood pressure.

Does Viagra Make You Bigger

How Do Drugs Such As Viagra Affect Blood Pressure?

Sildenafil is a highly effective medication, but there is one thing it cant do: Make your penis bigger. No pill can.

What it can do is make your erection as firm as it can possibly be, so your penis might seem bigger. Put another way, sildenafil and other ED medications make the most of what youve gotthey wont magically endow you with more length or girth permanently.

Erectile Dysfunction And High Blood Pressure: How Are They Linked

An erection is the result of a chain of chemical reactions in your body that begins when you become sexually aroused. Enzymes transmit signals to the blood vessels in your penis, causing them to relax and expand so that blood can flow in. As a result, your penis becomes firm and ready for sexual activity.

When you have high blood pressure, however, this puts a strain on your circulatory system. Over time, the lining of your blood vessels can be damaged and your arteries can harden and become narrow, restricting blood flow. This then prevents enough blood entering your penis to achieve a hard, lasting erection.

Research has found that men suffering from ED are 38% more likely to have high blood pressure, so theres a good chance that tackling your high blood pressure could help your erections too.

Viagra And Blood Pressure: What Should You Be Aware Of

In 30 seconds

If youre experiencing erectile dysfunction, this may be a sign that you also have high blood pressure , a common condition that can lead to restricted blood flow to the penis and impact your ability to achieve an erection.

ED medications like Viagra can often be taken safely at the same time as blood pressure medicines, but you should always consult your prescriber before use.

Making changes to your lifestyle, such as eating a healthy diet and reducing alcohol consumption, can help to treat ED and high blood pressure.

Men who are suffering from low blood pressure should seek medical advice before taking Viagra.

High blood pressure affects around a third of adults in the UK. Many people dont realise that they have high blood pressure, as it often doesnt cause noticeable symptoms. However, if its not treated it can lead to more serious health conditions, including heart disease, heart attacks, and strokes.

If youre experiencing erectile dysfunction , this can be a warning sign of high blood pressure, and you may want to have your blood pressure checked. The two conditions are closely connected because theyre both related to the health of your circulatory system: a firm erection depends on sufficient blood flow to the penis.

How To Treat High Blood Pressure Without Ruining Your Sex Life

Sophia Antipolis, France 28 Aug 2020: Men with untreated high blood pressure have poorer penile blood flow than those with normal blood pressure, according to research presented today at ESC Congress 2020.1 The differences disappeared with blood pressure medication. The results provide reassurance to men concerned about the effects of blood pressure-lowering medications.

Hypertension affects more than one billion people worldwide and is the leading cause of premature death.2 A healthy lifestyle is advised, including salt restriction, alcohol moderation, exercise, weight control, and smoking cessation. Most patients also require drug treatment, which is linked to reduced risks of death, stroke, and heart disease but around half of patients do not take their pills. Sexual dysfunction is one reason why patients stop medication.

Men with hypertension are almost twice as likely to have impaired penile blood flow and erectile dysfunction compared to men with normal blood pressure, increasing their risk of heart disease and death. High blood pressure damages artery walls, causing them to harden and narrow, and reducing blood flow to the penis. Erectile dysfunction is an early warning sign of damaged blood vessels.

He urged men with concerns about sexual dysfunction to discuss it with their doctor. For men with as yet untreated hypertension, older medications are not ideal and should be used only if absolutely indicated, he said.

Can Oral Ed Drugs Improve Sexual Satisfaction

Besides the fact that there are men suffering from high blood pressure, and other conditions, who should not take Viagra due to their health, or the drugs side effects, there is also a common misconception about how these drugs work.

Viagra and related oral ED medications can help a man get an erection. However, they do nothing to increase sensitivity, sexual satisfaction, or increase penis size.

In fact, a recent study of sexual satisfaction conducted in the UK found that while men between 55 and 87 who had used Viagra and similar drugs reported higher levels of sexual activity than men without an ED issue, they also were more likely to be dissatisfied with their sex lives. This basically means that just being able to perform more often, does not necessarily mean you are engaging in better, or more satisfying sex.

Having hypertension, in general, does not mean the patient cannot take PDE5 inhibitors if the patient has good blood pressure control. There is no contraindication for these medications. However, if the patient is taking nitrates or calcium channel blockers with controlled or low blood pressure, there is an absolute contraindication. Randomized Trials Improve Cardiac Conditions

In 2014, research published by the Journal BMC Medicine, analyzed 24 trials published between 2004 and 2014. The trials involved mixed populations of patients who were treated with phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitor , which is sildenafil citrate . The study found the following:

  • PDE5i prevented the heart from changing shape in patients suffering from left ventricular hypertrophy, a condition that causes thickening and enlargement of the heart muscle.
  • PDE5i also improved functioning of the heart in patients with a variety of cardiac conditions, with no affect on blood pressure.
  • Researchers found PDE5i improved efficiency when the heart pumped blood into vessels, along with relaxation between beats.

What If Viagra Doesnt Work

If youve tried VIAGRA and youre still not getting results, ask your doctor to see if adjusting your dose might help. Remember, VIAGRA should not be taken more than one time a day. VIAGRA may not be right for every man, but it has been shown to help approximately 4 out of 5 men get and keep erections hard enough for sex at doses of 50 mg or 100 mg.*

*Seventy-two percent, 80%, and 85% of the patients on 25 mg, 50 mg, and 100 mg of VIAGRA, respectively, achieved erections hard enough for sex, compared to 50% on placebo.

Also, men taking VIAGRA showed an improvement in their ability to get and keep an erection versus those who took placebo.

History Has Shown That Sildenafil Citrate Lowers Blood Pressure

The story how Viagra started is pretty interesting. In 1989, sildenafil citrate was created by British scientists, Peter Dunn and Albert Wood. They believed it would be useful in treating high blood pressure and angina, chest pain caused by the constriction of vessels that supply the heart with blood .

In 1991, Dr. Nicholas Terrett is named in the British patent for sildenafil citrate or Viagra, as a heart medication.

In the early 1990s, Pfizer completes several early trials of sildenafil citrate that provides little hope for its use as a heart disease treatment for angina. But volunteers in the clinical trials report increased erections several days after receiving a dose of the drug. The volunteers didnt want to return the medication. Can you blame them?

The rest is history and Viagra is known about in every circle as the drug to treat erectile dysfunction, talked about or not. But as you read its starting to become more popular for treating the heart and blood pressure, lets hope that the trend continues.

Does Cialis Lower Blood Pressure

Viagra and High Blood Pressure

Medically reviewed by Katelyn Hagerty, FNP

Cialis®, known in its generic form as tadalafil, is one of the most commonly prescribed erectile dysfunction medications on the market today.

While other erectile dysfunction drugs such as Viagra® and Levitra® are taken as needed immediately before sex, tadalafils long half-life the amount of time it takes to eliminate 50 percent of the drug from your system renders it effective for up to 36 hours.

Tadalafil can also be taken at a low dose on a daily basis, which allows those on the medication to be ready for sexual encounters as they come up organically, rather than having to take a pill and wait for it to kick in.

But like any other medication, tadalafil can have side effects and may not be right for everybody particularly those with certain medical conditions or those taking certain medications.

Below, well talk about how tadalafil works and the impact it can have on blood pressure.

Lesser Side Effects Caused By Viagra

For the most part, VIAGRA® doesnt cause any life-threatening side effects however, VIAGRA® can affect the heart. Adult Urology conducted a study involving 256 patients to study the side effects of VIAGRA®.

These results noted:

  • 30.8% of men experienced facial flushing
  • 25.4% of participants reported headaches
  • 18.7% of men experienced nasal congestion
  • 10.5% of participants reported heartburn

During the study, none of the men withdrew from the experiment or needed emergency intervention due to their symptoms.

Common Side Effects Of Oral Ed Drugs

Even men without hypertension, may not want to take Viagra or the other well-known oral ED medications, because they have a variety of unwelcome side effects. All of the popular oral ED medications are what are known as PDE5 inhibitors, and therefore work basically the same, with pretty much the same possible side effects.

The most common side effect is a headache, which occurs in about 16% of users of PDE5 inhibitors. Other reactions include flushing, upset stomach, nasal congestion, and urinary tract infections.

Rarer but reported side effects include vision problems such as blurred vision and sensitivity to light. However, men with retinitis pigmentosa , a degenerative eye disease, should be very cautious about using these medications. In such men that already have RP, Viagra use has been linked to total blindness.

Sudden hearing loss is another rare, but a documented side effect of these drugs. And, as stated earlier, men with diabetes, high blood pressure, or taking nitrates for heart disease should avoid PDE5 inhibitors entirely.
