Complicated Redesign And New Sensor Are Delaying Mass Manufacturing

By Adrian PotoroacaSeptember 1, 2021, 7:37

Why it matters: Apple is expected to announce the Apple Watch Series 7 this month, marking the first redesign since the Series 4 and bringing an important health monitoring upgrade in the form of a blood pressure sensor. However, fans looking forward to buying one will probably have to wait several weeks before theyll be able to get it, as manufacturing issues have delayed mass production until later this month.

The upcoming Apple Watch seems to have hit some production issues due to the device sporting a complicated design. According to separate reports from Nikkei Asia and Bloomberg, the new device will enter mass production at a later date than initially planned and is expected to be available in limited quantities at launch.

Apple suppliers began trial production runs for the Apple Watch Series 7 last week, but the new chassis has proven difficult to make within the tight tolerances required by the Cupertino tech giant. Assembling the components of the new wearable is also taking longer than with previous generations, as it requires more steps to complete, and the final product needs to meet requirements for water-resistance performance.

Production has been temporarily halted while Apple and its suppliers iron out the kinks in the manufacturing process and to further certify designs before going into mass production.

When Will Apple Watch Blood Pressure Monitoring Release

Apple Watch Blood Pressure

According to reliable reporter for Bloomberg, Apple will not be adding a blood-pressure monitor for the Apple Watch until 2024 at the earliest. Sources have told him that the feature has been in development for at least four years, but challenges in testing might result in them pushing back that date to 2025.

The main trouble with blood pressure monitoring is that its typically only possible using inflatable cuffs, whereas current sensor arrays in smartwatches are refined enough to detect skin temperature, heart rate, blood oxygen levels, and more. Samsungs smartwatches have the feature but requires that users perform regular calibration with an actual blood pressure monitor. It also isnt accurate enough for the FDA to give its official approval.

According to TechRadar, the Huawei Band D shown off at IFA 2022 will have a small pump that inflates a dual-layer airbag that is housed within the band itself. In this way, it operates similar to a standard blood pressure cuff by getting a reading off from tightening the watchs band around the users wrist.

At any rate, Apple has a habit of looking at how other companies incorporate a feature into their smartwatches before introducing them into the Apple Watch. As such, we may not see blood monitoring until the Apple Watch Series 9.

What Are The Types Of Blood Pressure Watches

Blood pressure watches are similar in many ways. A smart screen and self-inflating and deflating straps are defining features of every hypertension watch. The straps inflate and press your arteries to detect your bodys blood pressure. Their basic purpose aside, blood pressure watches differ in the following ways:

1. Basic Blood Pressure Watch

Checks only the blood pressure. Most of them are cheap but have to be operated manually. They come in many colors and screen shapes but dont offer any additional services. If you choose a simple blood pressure watch, comfort and accuracy should be your most important concerns. Battery life should also be good and its cost should be lower than what advanced watches cost.

2. Standard Blood Pressure Watch

Connected to iOS and Android apps, standard blood pressure watches tend to be as accurate as your doctors gauge. The best watches check your blood pressure in real time and send the data to an app using Bluetooth.

3. Sports Fitness Watch

Sports fitness watches are the sleekest of health watches. They track your movements using GPS and your speed using an accelerometer. Some also track your calorie count and the amount of sleep you have. You can then link the data with your smartphone. Its worth noting that fitness watches are much more expensive than blood pressure watches.

Look Out Apple: This Wearable Does Something The Apple Watch Cant Match

The Aktiia 24/7 Blood Pressure Monitoring Bracelet and the companion smartphone app.

Aktiia

Today, May 17, is World Hypertension Day. So, a good day to review one of the latest gadgets to measure your blood pressure, I hope. Ive used a lot of these devices over the years, from the excellent Withings BPM Connect to the Samsung Galaxy Watch 4, and the Huawei Watch D (which has a band that inflates to measure your blood pressure on your wrist in a similar way to a standalone inflatable cuff. But the neatest and most discreet yet is the Aktiia 24/7 Blood Pressure Monitoring Bracelet.

The Aktiia bracelet is a one-function gadget. It doesnt tell the time, or count your steps. Instead, this slim, light, demure-looking device measures your blood pressure, something the Apple Watch does not manage.

The Aktiia does its readings optically, as does the Samsung Galaxy Watch 4, for instance. Theres no inflatable cuff to strap around your upper arm: the bracelet does the measurements from your wrist alone.

This means that you need to calibrate the Aktiia once a month, and an inflatable blood pressure cuff that connects wirelessly to the bracelet is helpfully supplied for this purpose. Thats something Samsung doesnt provide, by the way.

The lightweight and discreet Aktiia 24/7 Blood Pressure Monitoring Bracelet.

It takes a dozen or more readings a day and, when you open the Aktiia smartphone app, the data is uploaded to your phone.

When Is This Coming To Apple Watch

These patents were filed in 2017, so Apple has now been sitting on this technology for a few years now. Could we see Apple Watch measuring blood pressure inside the next year or two? Its possible. But Apple will want to make sure the apparatus that makes this possible works 100% correctly and that could prove tricky. Itll also need to do thousands of hours of real-world tests to make sure the data it records is accurate.

On top of this, Apple will have to find a way to convince people to ditch their traditional, medically backed blood pressure measurement units in favor of a new strap for their Apple Watch. Finally, Apple will need to assess whether there is even demand for such a thing. I mean, most people might be fine with their current blood pressure measurement setup and not want to pay $100-$200 for an Apple Watch accessory that might not be as accurate.

Either way, the patents show Apples long-standing commitment to making Apple Watch the #1 wearable for tracking health metrics. Just recently, Apple added the ability to more accurately track heart rate fluctuations by improving Apple Watchs EEG technology. Adding in the ability to monitor blood pressure seems like the next obvious step for Apple Watchs health capabilities

Can I Measure My Blood Pressure With Apple Watch

Can the Apple watch measure blood pressure?

This is probably the most asked question by anybody who finds traditional blood pressure cuffs bothersome and inconvenient. Apple Watch alone cannot take a blood pressure reading. The only medically accurate and validated way to do so today is by stopping the blood flow by inflating a blood pressure cuff around your upper arm and then deflating it while listening for changes in your arteries. To use your Apple Watch to measure blood pressure, you will need a connected blood pressure monitor that has been medically validated for accuracy such as QardioArm, which has been clinically tested, FDA approved and has a CE Mark.

How The Blood Oxygen App Works

In Apple Watch Series 6 and Series 7, the optical heart sensor has been redesigned to add blood oxygen measurement capabilities. During a blood oxygen measurement, the back crystal shines red and green LEDs and infrared light onto your wrist. Photodiodes then measure the amount of light reflected back.

Advanced algorithms use this data to calculate the color of your blood. The color determines your blood oxygen level bright red blood has more oxygen, while dark red blood has less.

Can A Smartwatch Measure Blood Pressure

The creator of this post has chosen the Omron HeartGuide smartwatch as the best model that can measure your blood pressure accurately.

Even though a high blood pressure can sometimes be discovered through different symptoms, most of the time it isnt noticeable at all.

Many people die every year because of high blood pressure without having any idea they had it, thereby it is also called The Silent Killer.

A blood pressure monitor is a device thats used in hospitals and at your own doctor to give you insights in your personal blood pressure values.

Buying one to use at home is possible as well but this device isnt very easy to use while youre not at home and can be annoying to carry with you all the time.

Thankfully, at this very moment, there are a decent amount of smartwatch models available on the market that can measure blood pressure. Some examples are the Asus Vivowatch BP, the Model X smartwatch and the Z18 smartwatch.

Apple Watch Likely To Gain Blood Pressure Blood Glucose And Blood Alcohol Monitoring

Apple Fitness Watch With Blood Pressure

The Apple Watch may gain the ability to measure blood pressure, blood glucose, and blood alcohol levels, according to newly-revealed information about one of Appleâs chosen business partners.

Apple has been revealed to be the largest customer of the British electronics start-up Rockley Photonics, The Telegraph reports.

Rockley Photonics has developed non-invasive optical sensors for detecting multiple blood-related health metrics, including blood pressure, blood glucose, and blood alcohol levels, many of which are only normally detectable with more invasive dedicated medical equipment. Rockleyâs sensors beam infrared light through a userâs skin, much like the existing sensors on the back of the Apple Watch for detecting heart rate and blood oxygen levels.

Rockleyâs disclosure that its biggest client is Apple came about as the company prepares to go public in New York. The companyâs filings said that Apple accounted for the majority of its revenue over the last two years and that it has an ongoing âsupply and development agreementâ with the company, under which it expects to continue to heavily rely on Apple for most of its revenue.

Given the growth of Rockley Photonics and the scale of Appleâs partnership with the company, it seems to be virtually inevitable that the companyâs health sensor technology will be coming to the Apple Watch sooner rather than later.

Can The Apple Watch Measure Your Blood Pressure

Mikkel Christensen

You cant measure blood pressure with Apple Watch, and I really doubt any other watch can do it.

Joseph Cox

As mentioned above the Apple Watch and to my knowledge there isnt a watch device available that is capable of actually measuring blood pressure.

However, if you wish to record your blood pressure values and have them stored in your medical information in the Apple Health app just write a simple ShortCut which can be run from the watch which asks for the values you tell it the values and it adds the values to the Health app.

These values can be added to a spreadsheet if you which and you can even add onto ShortCuts with a third party app call Charty which will provide a graph .

Erica Fuller

An app is not going to allow to do something you dont have the hardware to support . there are plenty of BP apps out there but the Apple Watch can not monitor BP period regardless of what app you put on your phone. you may be able to find a 3rd party watch band with app to do what your looking for.

I bought a home blood pressure machine at the pharmacy. Just push a button and it takes your blood pressure on your upper arm. Then I enter the blood pressure reading into Apple Health app, manually into the blood pressure location on that app.

View Bp Data On Apple Watch With An App

The Apple Watch doesn’t provide a blood pressure monitor, but it does include a heart rate sensor and an electrocardiogram. This is good news for people concerned about hypertension, since heart rate and blood pressure have a positive correlation, according to a study by the University of Minnesota . Researchers concluded that “elevated heart rate is associated with increased peripheral blood pressure, increased risk for cardiovascular disease, and is modifiable.” That means Apple Watch users might be able to get an idea of their blood pressure state through heart rate readings. However, if someone is concerned about their blood pressure or needs to track it for health reasons, using appropriate medical equipment is recommended.

There are also legitimate ways to track blood pressure using an Apple Watch, even though it isn’t possible on-device. Third-party blood pressure monitors from brands like QardioArm, Withings, and iHealth can connect to Apple’s Health app on the iPhone to provide blood pressure data. This data can then be viewed on the wearer’s wrist with an Apple Watch app, which can be useful for constant monitoring. They work similarly to other health monitors, like constant glucose monitors, that continually collect data that can be viewed on Apple Watch. Although the Apple Watch doesn’t include a blood pressure monitor yet, it can still provide a solid picture of the wearer’s health.

Apple Watch Could Feature An Inflatable Cuff To Measure Blood Pressure

HOW The Future APPLE WATCHES will MEASURE Your BLOOD PRESSURE!

Apple is exploring a new way for users to take their blood pressure via their Apple Watch. The new filing details that a special watch band containing fluid in chambers can be used as a cuff to monitor blood pressure.

Embodiments include a blood pressure measurement device that includes a cuff for measuring blood pressure of a user. The cuff may include a bladder assembly configured to retain a fluid within an internal chamber where the bladder assembly is formed from a first cell defining a first portion of the internal chamber that is connected with a second cell defining a second portion of the internal chamber.

The cuff band would deflate and regain its length after the volume of the fluid decreases.

The bladder assembly can also include a fluid passage that is in fluid communication with the first cell and the second cell and coupled with a reservoir. The bladder assembly can exchange the fluid with the reservoir and be configured to increase in length when a volume of the fluid in the internal chamber decreases, and decrease in length when the volume of the fluid in the internal chamber increases.

The technology is expected to debut in Apple Watch Series 8 along with other new biometrics like monitoring glucose, alcohol, and hydration levels.
