    Check Your Monitor For Accuracy

An accurate wrist cuff monitor is crucial to reaching your blood pressure goals. If you have a new monitor, bring it with you to your next doctor appointment. Ask the nurse to check your pressure with their device and yours, to compare both readings.

If you already have a monitor, bring it with you once a year to make sure it remains accurate

When Is The Best Time To Take Your Blood Pressure

Since blood pressure varies throughout the day, its best to check your blood pressure a few times a day. The best time to take your blood pressure is typically after you wake up and before you have breakfast, says Dr. Avetian. He also recommends taking it again in the eveningbetween dinner and bedtimewhen youre feeling relaxed.

Dress Properly And Expose Your Wrist

The wrist cuff should wrap around your skin and not over any clothes. This will allow the monitor to receive the best signal from your blood vessels as possible. Also, consider wearing a short sleeve shirt or a sleeve that can easily be moved up your forearm and out of the way.

A looser more comfortable sleeve would be best, so it doesnt have to be tight or uncomfortable after its moved up your arm.

Most Common Errors With Arm Position For A Wrist Monitor

Many people make mistakes using both an upper arm or wrist monitor. While I perform my research or observe people in general, I witness more mistakes with the wrist monitor 5. Unfortunately, these mistakes are part of what gives wrist monitors a bad reputation for being inaccurate. The following are the most common:

Using an arm position they would use with an upper arm cuff. I see many people resting their wrist down on their thighs while sitting down. While this would place an upper arm cuff close to heart level, it leaves a wrist cuff well below.

Using the correct arm position but standing up. I see this mistake performed more by people who are exercising. Ive seen runners stop and check their pressure while still standing. I cant count how many times Ive seen a bicycle rider perform this mistake. Theyll stop the bike and check their pressure with a wrist cuff while still standing and balancing the bike.

Without these mistakes, you may still question the accuracy of a wrist monitor. Youd be shocked how much a wrist cuff differed from an upper arm cuff in studies. I wrote all about that in my blog post, Are Wrist Blood Pressure Monitors Accurate?

Correct Arm Position For Wrist Blood Pressure Monitor

Wrist monitors have gained in popularity lately for various reasons. Similar to an upper arm cuff monitor, the position of the arm is crucial for obtaining an accurate measurement. Because of the increased popularity, many people have been inquiring, what is the correct arm position for a wrist blood pressure monitor?

To obtain the correct arm position for a wrist blood pressure monitor the elbow should rest comfortably on a level surface. The elbow should then be bent and the wrist raised so the cuff is at heart level. The wrist and hand have to remain relaxed and not bent backward or forward.

If arm position is unproperly executed, theres a decent chance your readings will be inaccurate 1. Ill inform you about tips to help accomplish the correct position and the most common errors to avoid that most people are making right now. In addition, Ill explain how your readings will be inaccurate and by how much.

    • Dont be in a stressed state of mind immediately before or during the measurement

Additional tip: Blood pressure can fluctuate even in a short period of time. To get a more accurate insight, you can take two to three measurements one minute apart from each other and average the results.

BP measurements can differ slightly between your left and right arm, this is normal, but a big difference can indicate a serious health problem.

Keep A Log Of Your Blood Pressure Readings

Keeping a record of your readings is important and allows you to bring them to your doctor on your next visit. Most wrist cuff monitors have a built-in memory or a phone app where they can be stored.

If your monitor doesnt have a memory feature, then keep a written record. Whichever way you track your readings, I suggest you bring the monitor with you on your next doctor visit so you can follow step #11.

How Do Blood Pressure Monitors Typically Work

Blood pressure monitors measure two types of pressure, systolic and diastolic.

Systolic pressure is the top number. Its the pressure that occurs when your heart is beating and pushing blood through your arteries.

Diastolic pressure is the bottom number. Its the pressure that occurs when your heart is filling with blood between heartbeats.

Wrist and upper arm blood pressure monitors work in the same way:

  • A cuff is inflated tightly over the wrist or arm, blocking blood flow through the artery.
  • As the cuff deflates and reaches your systolic pressure, blood flow resumes around the artery. This creates blood sounds, or vibrations, that the blood pressure monitor detects.
  • The vibrations stop when your diastolic pressure is reached.

How To Use Your Blood Pressure Monitor

Taking care of your heart health is important. However, taking your own blood pressure measurements can seem daunting at first. But it doesnt have to be. Here is our quick and easy guide to a healthier and more confident you.

In order to get an accurate measurement, it is important to follow these rules:

    • Always take readings at the same time of day, under the same conditions. Always measure on the same arm. The left arm is recommended.
    • Do not take a measurement within 30 minutes of smoking, drinking coffee or tea or any form of exertion. These factors will influence the measurement.
    • Ensure at least 5 minutes of quiet rest before measurements. If possible, it is recommended to rest 10 minutes before taking the measurement. Try to always use the same resting time before taking a measurement.
    • If you want to take multiple measurements, wait approximately 3 minutes before repeating a measurement.

How To Apply The Cuff Correctly

How to Use a Wrist Blood Pressure Monitor

    Upper arm blood pressure monitor

CHECK.1Apply the cuff to bare skin or light innerwear

Wrap the cuff snuggly around the arm, on bare skin or light innerwear, making sure the cuff is securely in place. Remove heavy clothes such as a sweater before measurement, instead of rolling up the sleeves.

CHECK.2Make the air tube run down the inside of your arm

Adjust the position of the air tube so that it runs down the inside of your arm and is positioned at the center of your arm.

    CHECK.3Cuff wrapping position

Position the cuff about 1-2cm above the bend of your elbow.Make sure that the cuff does not cover the joint region.

    Wrist blood pressure monitor

Wrap the wrist cuff securely around your wrist. Do not apply the cuff over clothing.

CHECK.2Wrap the cuff around whichever wrist is easier to apply to

The cuff may be wrapped around either the right or left wrist. However, because measurement values vary between the right and left wrists, make sure to always measure on the same side.

    CHECK.3Cuff wrapping position

Position the cuff leaving a clearance of about 1-1.5cm between the cuff and the bottom of your palm. Make sure the wrist cuff does not cover the wrist bone.

    Arm And Cuff Position

Now that you have your body in the proper position and the cuff on your wrist, start your 5 minutes of quiet time. Once youre relaxed, the wrist and arm position are the next step. Just like with an upper arm cuff, its extremely important to have the wrist cuff at the height of your heart 5.

There are two ways to accomplish this. The first is to rest your elbow on the table surface in front of you. Then bend your elbow raising the cuff up to the same height as your heart. Most decent monitors have a heart height sensor which will let you know when the cuff is at the correct height.

Please read your monitor manual for the specific instructions on this for your particular monitor.

The Omron wrist monitor I recommend, requires the distance from the top of your seat to the top of the table to be between 10 to 14 apart. If the distance doesnt fall into the range, they say to turn off the sensor and determine the height yourself.

In addition, the size of persons torso may make the sensor inaccurate. If either one of these are the situation for you, follow the second technique.

The second technique involves stopping the cuff at the height you determine where your heart is. You can keep your elbow in the same position as the first technique above.

Or you can slide it out to the side and position the cuff close to your chest to help determine the correct height. Once the cuff is at the correct height, keep it there for the measurement.
