Supplements To Lower A High Blood Pressure Conclusion

4 supplements to help lower Blood Pressure

High blood pressure is one of the most important heart disease and stroke risk factors your doctor will even screen you for. Controlling blood pressure down to, ideally, less than 130/80 mmHg is vital for long-term circulatory health. While medication is often needed, diet and lifestyle changes can improve your blood pressure control and help to limit the number and dose of medicines you need.

I have a website dedicated to controlling blood pressure at MyLowerBloodPressure.com.

If your blood pressure is raised, self-monitoring is key to maintaining good control.

Extra Vitamin C May Help Lower Blood Pressure

Taking Supplements May Slightly Reduce High Blood Pressure, Study Suggests

April 20, 2012 — Vitamin C supplements may help to lower blood pressure, a new study suggests.

In this review study, scientists analyzed data from 29 different clinical trials and about 1,400 adults aged 22 to 74.

The median dose of supplemental vitamin C taken by the study participants was 500 milligrams a day over a median of an eight-week period. In people who had high blood pressure, systolic blood pressure dropped by nearly 5 points, while diastolic pressure dropped by about 1.7 points.

“Our research suggests a modest blood pressure lowering effect with vitamin C supplementation,” researcher Edgar “Pete” R. Miller III, MD, PhD, says in a news release.

“But before we can recommend supplements as a treatment for high blood pressure, we really need more research to understand the implications of taking them,” says Miller, an associate professor in the division of general internal medicine at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine in Baltimore.

Other studies have suggested a possible link between people with higher intakes of vitamin C from food or supplements and lower blood pressure. But the evidence of this effect from clinical trials has been mixed.

Nearly 1 in 3 American adults has high blood pressure, which increases their risk for heart disease and stroke. The condition is typically treated by dietary changes, exercise, not smoking, losing weight, and medication.

What Is Blood Pressure

Blood pressure is a combination of systolic and diastolic pressure. Systolic pressure represents blood force, or pressure, while the heart is beating and diastolic pressure stands for blood pressure when the heart is at rest.

Systolic pressure is always the first or top measurement in a blood pressure reading. In a reading of 130/80, 130 represents systolic pressure and 80 represents diastolic pressure. In prehypertension, systolic numbers range from 120129 and diastolic numbers are less than 80.

Blood pressure ranges include:

  • Normal: Less than 120/80 mm Hg
  • Prehypertension: Systolic between 120129 and diastolic less than 80
  • Stage 1 high blood pressure: Systolic between 130139 or diastolic between 8089
  • Stage 2 high blood pressure: Systolic at least 140 or diastolic at least 90 mm Hg

Numbers for stage 1 hypertension vary from 130139 for systolic values and/or 8089 in diastolic numbers. With stage 2 hypertension, systolic readings are 140 or higher and/or diastolic readings measure 90 or higher. Although both numbers are significant, after about age 50, the systolic number is most important. Only 10 percent of high blood pressure cases are due to secondary or identifiable causes such as medications, or conditions and diseases of other organs.

Results of high blood pressure include:

  • Arterial damage
  • Heavy-metal poisoning

Making Sure To Get Enough Of The Essential Vitamins And Minerals

Is it necessary to take supplements though, or can we get enough of the essential elements we need to stay healthy from what we eat and drink?

That is the big health question. The debate has been going on for a while and shows no sign of stopping.

Supplements are necessary to ensure youre getting enough nutrients

Some argue that its impossible to get enough of the important vitamins and minerals from food, and that its necessary to supplement this by taking vitamin and mineral pills.

One of the reasons you may not be getting enough essential nutrients needed is that youre not eating a varied and balanced enough diet not eating many vegetables, for example. However, even if you are eating very well, the effects of decades of large-scale intensive farming is that in many places soils are depleted of nutrients . Which means the foods grown in such soils are less nutritious than in previous years. In this case, supplements may be useful to supply the missing nutrients.

Or supplements arent effective and are a waste of money ?

Others argue that the body cant extract the right substances in the right form from supplements as well as it can from natural food, and so taking supplements is ineffective, and a waste of money.

As for the general question of supplementing or not, it doesnt seem to be unequivocally answered by research yet. Theres some evidence for both points of view.

Smoking And Too Much Alcohol

Garlic Supplements Help Lower High Blood Pressure

3 Min Read

NEW YORK – Garlic supplements may lower blood pressure just as effectively as some drugs used to treat hypertension can, according to a new research review.

Supplementation with garlic preparations may provide an acceptable alternative or complementary treatment option for hypertension, Dr. Karin Ried and colleagues from The University of Adelaide in South Australia write.

Research to date on garlic and blood pressure has had inconclusive results, they note, while the last meta-analysis – in which the results of several studies are analyzed collectively — only included studies done up until 1994.

To provide an updated perspective, Ried and her team included more recently published studies in their analysis, identifying 11 studies in which the patients were randomly assigned to garlic or placebo. In most studies, participants given garlic took it in powdered form, as a standardized supplement. Doses ranged from 600 mg to 900 mg daily, which study participants took for 12 to 23 weeks.

When the researchers pooled the data from the trials, they found that garlic reduced systolic blood pressure by 4.6 mm Hg, on average. An analysis limited to people with high blood pressure showed garlic reduced systolic blood pressure by 8.4 mm Hg, on average, and diastolic blood pressure by 7.3 mm Hg. The higher a persons blood pressure -was at the beginning of the study, the more it was reduced by taking garlic.

How We Made Our Top Blood Pressure Supplements List

In our quest to find the best blood pressure supplements in 2021, our research team encountered multiple brands claiming to support normal blood pressure and improve cardiovascular function. As a result, they used the following criteria to make a list.

Proven Ingredients and Dosages

Blood pressure supplements use ingredients such as garlic and hawthorn fruit extracts, but the ingredients should be of the right quality and dosage for the supplement to be effective. Therefore, we chose brands whose quality and dosage of ingredients have been confirmed in a double-blind placebo-controlled trial.

Effects on Cardiovascular Health

Some blood pressure supplements work by increasing nitric oxide to dilate blood vessels, while others supply the body with antioxidants to protect it against free radicals. However, some supplement companies make vague claims about supporting blood pressure using natural ingredients. Therefore, we made our list from the companies that state the specific supplement effects.

Transparent Advertising

Due to FDA regulations, blood pressure supplements should avoid direct claims about lowering blood pressure or preventing heart disease. As a result, companies claim their supplements support blood pressure. We chose our products from brands that honestly and transparently advertise their blood pressure supplements.

The Research On Fish Oil For High Blood Pressure

Supplements to Lower Blood Pressure

Some research suggests that omega-3 fatty acids from fish oil supplements may aid in blood pressure control.

In a research review published in the American Journal of Hypertension in 2014, for instance, investigators sized up 70 previously published clinical trials examining the effects of the omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA from seafood, fortified foods, or supplements on people with or without high blood pressure.

The researchers found that the average systolic blood pressure decreased by 4.51 mm Hg in people who took DHA and EPA . Diastolic blood pressure decreased by an average of 3.05 mm Hg.

In their analysis, the researchers found that among all people who took omega-3 fatty acids through supplements like fish oil, systolic blood pressure decreased by 1.75 mm Hg and diastolic blood pressure was lowered by 1.1 mm Hg .

Potassium Lowers Blood Pressure

When it comes to fighting high blood pressure, the average American diet delivers too much sodium and too little potassium. Eating to reverse this imbalance could prevent or control high blood pressure and translate into fewer heart attacks, strokes, and deaths from heart disease.

Normal body levels of potassium are important for muscle function. Potassium relaxes the walls of the blood vessels, lowering blood pressure and protecting against muscle cramping. A number of studies have shown an association between low potassium intake and increased blood pressure and higher risk of stroke. On the flip side, people who already have high blood pressure can significantly lower their systolic blood pressure by increasing their potassium intake when they choose to eat healthy foods.

Most Americans get barely half of the recommended amount of potassium 4,700 milligrams a day. Fruits, vegetables, beans, and some seeds offer good ways to get more of it. Bananas are often held up as the poster child for potassium, but there are better sources.

Since people with high blood pressure may also be trying to lose weight, consider potassium rich foods that are low in calories and carbohydrates. Good examples include broccoli, water chestnuts, spinach, and other leafy greens. Also goodalthough slightly higher in carbs and caloriesare butternut squash and sweet potatoes, and fruits such as cantaloupe, kiwi, and nectarines.

Which Are The Best Supplements To Buy

Not all supplements were created equal so its important to buy a high quality supplement. If youre going to spend the money to get a supplement, then dont waste it on a poor quality one that wont actually help you.

This is a bit easier said than done sometimes though! Even supplements of the same basic ingredient come in different forms. The supplements can contain different amounts of the main ingredient, contain the main ingredient in different chemical forms, and also have different other ingredients. All of these affect how well the ingredient can be absorbed and used by your body.

Which form is best is specific to each kind of supplement, and often there is some disagreement over this. The best thing is to decide which supplements you want to take narrow it down to the most important and then do a bit of research: sometimes the staff of the health food or supplement store are a good source of knowledge, or ask a health professional your doctor, or a nutritionist or suchlike.

Aim to find which are the best brands those which are known for making good quality supplements. Price isnt always an accurate guideline, but the super-cheap supplements may not be as effective. If youre going to take it, make it count.

Potassium

Normal body levels of potassium are important for muscle function, including relaxing the walls of the blood vessels. This lowers blood pressure and protects against muscle cramping. Normal potassium levels also are important for the conduction of electrical signals in the nervous system and in the heart. This protects against an irregular heartbeat.

The Recommended Dietary Allowance of potassium is 4.7 grams per day for both men and women ages 51 and older.
