What Does A Blood Pressure Reading Look Like

What is a normal blood pressure reading?

When you have your , you will be given two numbers, a top number and a bottom number.

  • Systolic blood pressure. This is the first, or top, number. This is the highest level your blood pressure reaches when your heart beats, forcing blood around your body.
  • Diastolic blood pressure. The second number, or bottom number, is the lowest level your blood pressure reaches as your heart relaxes between beats.

Blood pressure is measured in millimetres of mercury . If the first number is 120 and the second number is 80, this would be written as 120/80mmHg, and youd call it 120 over 80.

This video explains more about systolic and diastolic blood pressure.

What Are Normal Blood Pressure Ranges By Age For Women

As with men, womens average BP ranges likewise differ by age group. The age group with the lowest blood pressure for teenagegirls is different between the systolic and diastolic ranges. Women ages 21-25 have the most under normal diastolic reading, i.e., 115.5-70.5, while blood pressure for a teenage girl 31-35 has the lowest normal systolic reading . The age group with the highest blood pressure for teenage femalesages 56-60 .

Researchers Track Teens at Risk for Progression to High Blood Pressure as Adults

May 19, 2006 — Teens with prehypertension or high blood pressure are more likely to have high blood pressure and its related complications when they grow up unless they make some changes now, a new study shows.

The research was presented Friday at the 21st Annual Scientific Meeting of the American Society of Hypertension in New York City.

A blood pressure level of 140/90 mmHg or higher is considered high. If blood pressure is between 120/80 mmHg and 139/89 mmHg, itâs called prehypertension, according to the National HeartLung and Blood Institute in Bethesda, Md.

Prehypertension means that you don’t have high blood pressure now but are likely to develop it in the future. This condition also increases your risk of developing the known complications of high blood pressure — namely heart disease and stroke.

In the new study of more than 8,000 adolescents aged 13 and 15, researchers compared single blood pressure readings taken two years apart. They found that there was a linear increase — from normal blood pressure to prehypertension to hypertension — in the percentage of adolescents classified with hypertension at the second examination. The data show that the progression of prehypertension to hypertension is approximately 7% per year.

When Should You Take A Teen To See A Doctor For High Blood Pressure

PALM OIL MILL & MANAGEMENT & MOTIVATION

You should take your teen to the doctor to measure their blood pressure if:

    • High blood pressure runs in the family They should see the doctor to assess if they are genetically predisposed to high blood pressure and whether any early prevention treatment is needed.

    • They are overweight This increases their chances of developing high blood pressure, and you should contact your healthcare provider to learn proper ways to shed some pounds and improve their lifestyle to reduce the risk of high blood pressure.

    • Their blood pressure is higher than 180/120mmHg They should take a five-minute rest before their blood pressure is rechecked. If it remains above 180/120mmHg, seek medical attention immediately.

    • Prescribed medications don’t seem to lower their blood pressure They should see the doctor and go over other treatment plans.

High Blood Pressure In Kids And Teens

Too many kids and teens have high blood pressure and other risk factors for heart disease and stroke. Using the updated 2017 American Academy of Pediatrics Clinical Practice Guidelineexternal icon, a CDC study shows that about 1 in 25 youth ages 12 to 19 have hypertension, and 1 in 10 has elevated blood pressure . High blood pressure is more common in youth with obesity.

High blood pressure in youth is linked to health problems later in life. The good news is that you can both help prevent high blood pressure and manage it.

Is It Normal For A Teenager To Have High Blood Pressure

High blood pressure commonly develops as people advance in age. It affects approximately 66% of people above 65 years old, and about 100 million American adults¹ are affected by high blood pressure.

There has been a significant rise in the diagnosis of high blood pressure amongst children and teenagers due to the obesity epidemic. Nearly 800,000 young people in the US² are affected by high blood pressure.

Normal Blood Pressure Range By Age

Blood pressure is essential for healthy blood circulation. Blood must move from our heart to all parts of the body, and the pressure, or resistance, is measured. Blood pressure that is too high means that there is too much resistance and is typically what health professionals refer to as high blood pressure, or hypertension. There is not a normal or average “range” for blood pressure, meaning you don’t need to stay between two numbers. A normal blood pressure for any age, male or female, is a reading less than 120/80. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimate that 1 in 3 Americans, or 29 percent have blood pressure that is too high.

Normal Blood Pressure For Teen Boys

What is a Normal Blood Pressure Reading?

Normal blood pressure in adolescents is defined as less than the 90th blood pressure percentile, as outlined in the most recent practice recommendations published in the August 2004 issue of “Pediatrics.” Understanding the normal range for a specific teen requires applying the teens age and height percentage from the standard growth charts to the blood pressure chart. For example, a normal blood pressure for a 13-year-old boy, whose height falls in the 50th percentile, is below 122/77. A normal blood pressure for a 17-year-old boy who falls on the 90th percentile for height is below 135/84.

    Determination Of Reference Values

In this analysis, data from our school-based Kiel EX.PRESS. Study were evaluated to determine the exercise SBP values corresponding to the well-accepted reference percentiles of resting SBP by using percentiles of the distribution of both resting and exercise SBP. This procedure proved to be an appropriate method to determine informative and less arbitrary normal values as generated in previous studies. ,

In order to consider maturational differences, the study population was divided into 3 subgroups within the sexes involving participants aged 1213 years, 1415 years, and 1617 years.

At first, the prevalence of high normal and hypertensive resting SBP in our study were derived from German age-, height- and sex-based reference data of only normal weight subjects, which are very similar to international data. As a consequence, the corresponding SBP percentiles within age group and sex strata for the present study were available. Subsequently, the calculated percentiles of our distribution of resting SBP were used to identify the respective percentiles for exercise SBP. The exercise SBP values at these percentiles in our sample are proposed as reference values for high normal and elevated exercise SBP .

Symptoms Of High Blood Pressure In Teens

Typically, high blood pressure may not have warning signs or symptoms, which is why its called ‘the silent killer.’ It is estimated that 46% of adults³ with high blood pressure are unaware of their condition. The only way to know for sure you have high blood pressure is by having your blood pressure measured. This is easy and completely painless, and you can do it yourself at home or have a health practitioner measure it for you.

Like most diseases, if high blood pressure is detected early, it’s easier to prevent its advancement into severe medical conditions that could lead to death.

Although many people wont experience any signs or symptoms of high blood pressure, some individuals may do so, and these can include:

    • Early morning headaches

How Is High Blood Pressure Diagnosed

heart: Childrens Normal Heart Rate Chart

Your child’s doctor may note an elevated blood pressure reading during a routine office visit. Obtaining calm, resting blood pressures on several different occasions will provide better information about whether the blood pressure elevation is consistent or due to fear or stress.

Your child’s doctor will obtain a medical history, including information about your child’s diet, exercise level, home and school activities, and possible stressors. A physical examination may also be performed.

Diagnostic tests may help determine if your child’s high blood pressure is related to an illness, or is “essential” or “primary” hypertension, meaning it has no known cause. Diagnostic procedures may include:

Other tests may be needed to evaluate the health of other organs which may contribute to hypertension.

    Exercise Sbp Reference Values

Based on our distribution of high normal and hypertensive resting SBP values the corresponding percentiles in our study were determined and the exercise SBP values at these percentiles were calculated. The exercise SBP that correlates to the defined limit of hypertensive and high normal resting SBP referring to German reference percentiles were derived for boys and girls across age groups. The results are presented in .

The detected reference values were related to a prevalence of 8.8% and 7.5% of hypertensive exercise SBP values in the female and male subgroup, 5.8% and 5.2% were within the high normal range, respectively. Therefore, a proportion of 8.1% of the investigated adolescents showed an exaggerated SBP response during exercise testing in the present study.

That also implies, 79.1% of our participants had normal resting and exercise SBP values, whereas normal resting SBP but at least high normal SBP values during exercise testing were studied in 7.7%. In this subgroup, several predictive risk factors, e.g., a higher body mass index and waist circumference as well as poorer physical fitness and a lower amount of physical activity could be identified compared to subjects with both normal resting and exercise SBP. In contrast, a higher than optimal or hypertensive resting SBP was not confirmed during exercise in 7.3% of the subjects. Though, additional 5.9% had both at least high normal resting and exercise SBP values.

    How Blood Pressure Is Measured

Blood pressure testing stations can be found in pharmacies, workplaces, and medical clinics. You can also buy a blood pressure monitor online or at your local pharmacy.

To measure blood pressure, a cuff attached to a monitor is placed on your arm. The cuff is then inflated with an air pump until its pressure stops blood flow from your brachial arterythe major artery found in your upper arm.

As the cuff deflates, the device measures the pressure when blood starts flowing again . Once the cuff is completely deflated, the device gauges the lowest pressure between beats .

Typically, more attention is given to the systolic pressure reading, as systolic blood pressure is a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease in people over the age of 50. Still, both readings are used to make a diagnosis.

    How Is Blood Pressure Measured

Health care providers measure blood pressure with a cuff that wraps around the upper arm. When the cuff inflates, it squeezes a large artery, stopping the blood flow for a moment. Blood pressure is measured as air is slowly let out of the cuff, which lets blood flow through the artery again.

Blood pressure is measured in two numbers:

  • The pressure when the heart pumps.
  • The pressure when the heart rests between beats.
  • You hear blood pressure reported as the first number “over” the second number, like 120 over 80 or 120/80.

    About blood pressure

Blood pressure is a measure of the force of blood against the artery walls, and is expressed as systolic pressure/diastolic pressure in millimetres of mercury . The systolic pressure is the pressure when the heart contracts and pushes the blood out, and the diastolic pressure is the lowest pressure when the heart relaxes between beats.

Resting blood pressure was measured in the CHMS using an automated device following a five-minute rest period. The BPTru recorded six measurements, one minute apart. The average systolic and diastolic blood pressure were calculated using the last five out of six measurements.

    What Do The Readings Mean

    As a general guide:

140/90mmHg or over you may have high blood pressureMost doctors use 140/90mmHg as the cut off for point for diagnosing . This is the point where your risk of serious health problems goes up. They might prescribe and advise you to make changes to your to bring your blood pressure down. 120/80mmHg up to 140/90mmHg pre-high blood pressureAlso called high-normal blood pressure. This is not high blood pressure, but it is a little higher than it should be and means you could go on to develop high blood pressure. See how you can make to lower it. 90/60mmHg up to 120/80mmHg ideal blood pressureAlso called normal blood pressure. Your blood pressure reading is healthy. At this level you have a much lower risk of heart disease and stroke. There was blood pressure for teenage boys an average blood pressure of 123.9/65.9 mmHg was found, while for teenage girls, the average was 117.6/70.9 mmHg. In cases with blood pressure readings over the 90% fractile, repeated measurements are recommended. Healthy blood pressure can be affected by many factors, including the following:

    • The time of day. Healthy blood pressures vary during waking times and are more profound as we sleep.
    • Real activity. Healthy blood pressure usually is more important during and shortly after exercise and lower at ease.
    • Emotional states. Emotions such as fear, anger, or happiness can change the normal blood pressure rate.
